The Whiteman Family Revisited Part 2 -- Henry Whiteman and AJ Whiteman Houses

Henry Whiteman House, 1913
In the last post I began to revisit the story of the Henry Whiteman House, a topic I first covered several years ago. As I noted, there are actually several Whiteman houses near Paper Mill Road, between Smiths Mill Road and Polly Drummond Hill Road. (There are maybe a half dozen others throughout MCH, but we'll focus on these particular ones for right now.) We've covered the oldest of these homes, the Jacob Whiteman House built sometime between 1804 and 1816. The next one, the Henry Whiteman House, sits on what was the southern portion of his father Jacob's original 196 acre tract. Henry purchased this half of his father's land shortly before Jacob's death in 1826, and by 1828 Henry had already erected a stone house on the property for himself and his family. At the time, he and wife Anna (Kinsey) had four children, with the fourth, Henry, Jr., being born in 1827, around the time the house was completed. The couple would ultimately have nine children.

Henry resided here for almost 30 years, up until his death in 1855. At that point, the history as written in the 1999 UD report stated that the house and farm went to his son George. This was another of the points at which I was confused the first time around, since I couldn't find a George Whiteman in the 1850 or 1860 censuses. I now know why, and I also know a bit more about this man.

The man in question is Henry and Anna's third son, George Washington Whiteman. The reason I couldn't find him in the 1850 Census is that he was listed as Washington Whiteman. (Like his brother Andrew Jackson Whiteman who often went by Jackson or Jack, George Washington seems to have preferred his middle name.) To be quite honest, I can't really be sure exactly what transpired without seeing the property documents firsthand, but if (George) Washington did inherit the house from his father, one way or another he didn't own it long. The history was somewhat (ok, very) vague on how, when, and why the house passed to the next brother, Henry, Jr., saying only that George had it for at least five years and that it had gone to Henry by 1864. Thanks to a piece of information sent to me by Wendy Orley, a descendant of the family (we'll get to her particular line shortly), we now have a better idea of about when and why George gave up the house, and why he didn't appear in the 1860 Census. [I should also credit Donna Peters, who apparently sent me similar information a while back, but I didn't put two and two together correctly at the time. My bad.] The article below appeared in the (Richmond, VA) Daily Dispatch on February 7, 1860:
SUICIDE- The Wilmington (Del) Commonwealth learns that a sad case of suicide occurred in Mill Creek Hundred on Sunday week. A man named Washington Whiteman, who had been drinking for a long time, swallowed about 2 ounces of laudanum, from the effects of which he soon died. It appears that Whiteman some years since came in possession of a farm by the death of his father, which he sold for about $3500, and with a portion of the money, he purchased a brick store-house at Milford Corner, about which time he commenced to drink, and without attempting to do anything or improve his property, continued to drink until he had wasted his substances, and finally in a fit of despair ended his miserable life as above stated. He leaves a wife and four small children to mourn his unhappy end and buffet the waves of a hard-hearted world.

This story clears a few things up (like G.W.'s absence from the 1860 Census), but raises a few more. (Honestly, though, they could probably be answered by, "The newspaper article isn't exactly accurate.") It says he had been "drinking for a long time", then seems to say he didn't start until after the death of his father. His father, Henry, Sr., died only five years earlier. Another seeming contradiction is the fact that the UD paper states that George had the house for at least five years, although it doesn't state why they say that. The above article implies he sold the farm not long after receiving it, and certainly well before his 1860 death. Without seeing the original documents, I can't be sure what the real story was. On another level, though, none of these details make the story any less tragic for his wife and children.*

Henry Whiteman House, 1913

Whether it was due to George Washington Whiteman's untimely death, or whether it was due to an earlier transaction, the stone house built by Henry Whiteman around 1826 did eventually end up in the hands of Henry, Jr., his fourth son. Of the two remaining older sons, John Kinsey was already established on a farm east of Pike Creek, and Lemuel, to whom we'll return in a moment, had moved out of state. As best as I can tell from the census and map data, Henry, Jr. remained at the house until his death in 1884. The 1868 map shows the house as "H. Whiteman", and the 1860, 1870, and 1880 Censuses seem to show Henry and family in the same house. The only glitch is the 1881 map which shows a "W. Whiteman" in the house. But since there are no W. Whitemans in the 1880 Census outside of Israel's teenage sons just to the north, I have to assume that this is an error on the map. The 1893 map lists it as "S. Whiteman Est.", which presumably is the estate of Henry's widow, Sarah Ann (Moore).*

Stepping back a few years, though, we get a little personal story from the Whiteman clan, courtesy of Wendy, an eventual result of the story. Lemuel, second son of Henry, Sr., had married a woman named Elizabeth, who gave birth to a daughter named Mary Ann in 1844. (Mary Ann is Wendy's great-grandmother.) Elizabeth died not long after, and Lemuel remarried to a woman named Hellen. It seems that the young Mary Ann did not get along with her new step-mother, only 14 years her senior (whether this fact had anything to do with it, I don't know). Although Lemuel was still nearby in MCH in 1850, Mary Ann had gone off to live with her grandfather Henry in his home, along with her grandmother, three uncles, and an aunt. She remained after her father and stepmother moved to Cecil County, MD. In the fall of 1862, a young man named Edward Swain Past came to stay with the family. He was a 21 year old soldier wounded at the Battle of Antietam, and a relative of Anna Kinsey Whiteman (Henry's wife). Edward had been sent to the farm to recuperate from his injury.

Edward Past, c.1862 and Mary Ann Whiteman Past 1894

In what must have been a storybook romance, Edward and Mary Ann quickly fell in love, and were married in March of the following year. They spent 51 years together, until Edward's passing in 1914. Soon after marrying the couple moved out west, but returned to Mill Creek Hundred on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1913. Many of the photos included in this post were taken during that trip. A number of the pictures feature the last of the three Whiteman houses in this area, the Andrew Jackson Whiteman House that stands a few hundred feet back from Paper Mill Road, across from Henry's home.

A.J. Whiteman House, 1914

It's with this house also that my understanding of the history deviates a bit from what's written in the UD report. It states that in 1864, Henry gave the farm (and by implication, the house) to Jackson. Since Henry seems to be living in the house the rest of his life, what I think may have happened is that Henry gave his younger brother a portion of the property, on which Jackson built his own house.* The fact that it doesn't appear on the 1849 map but does in 1868, plus the style of the house, seem to bolster this idea. When the Pasts came back to visit in 1913, Jackson was still residing in his house, while the Henry Whiteman House may have been owned by one of Israel's sons. The only intriguing piece of information that doesn't quite fit this story is that the A.J. Whiteman House apparently has some sort of small, stone interior section. This make me wonder if maybe Jackson didn't just greatly expand upon an older, existing stone house. If I'm ever able to find out more about this house, I'll certainly pass along the information.

Although they were not among the original settling families in MCH, the Whitemans have over two centuries of very meaningful history here (continuing to this day). There are certainly many more stories to uncover relating to the family, and at least a few more houses that I know of, to get to another day. I want to thank Wendy again for sharing some of these stories and pictures with us. These family stories (like Mary Ann and Edward's) may not seem all that significant sometimes, but I really do believe that more than anything else, they help to bring us closer to our predecessors in the area. Local history really is made of these.

*Additional Facts and Related Thoughts:
  • Another reference to Washington Whiteman, found by Donna, lists his cause of death as "fever". Not surprisingly, it seems the family might have tried to "clean up" their history. I'll have to do more research to find out exactly where his property was at Milford Crossroads.
  • Here is as good a time as any to note the very, very tight bond between the Whiteman and Moore families. Amongst the children of Henry Whiteman and Thomas J. Moore, there were no less than six marriages. John Kinsey Whiteman - Margaret Moore. Henry Whiteman - Sarah Moore. Gilbert Whiteman - Rachel Moore. Margaret Whiteman - Jacob Moore. Andrew Jackson Whiteman - Mary Moore, then Susanna Moore.
  • It was presumably in this house, then that the tragic death of Jackson's first wife, Mary, occurred in 1866. That story can be found here, and updated here.

Sitting Pretty

The porch has been a kind of catch-all this summer. Some weeks it was so cluttered one could hardly get to the front door! With Winter looming on the horizon and the days getting cooler and cooler and Mom announcing she thought this was the last weekend we could paint outdoors, we decided to spring into action.
Friday afternoon Mandy sanded it down and by that evening we managed to get a coat of primer on. Then Saturday (while Mandy and I worked on the plaster in the bathroom) Mom painted the floor. I love how bright and cheery the color is! (the pictures are a little dark as it is later in the afternoon)
Can't you just picture a couple of wicker chairs loaded with pillows?

Scandiniavian Wedding: Landskrona & Ven

After a short train from Copenhagen passing through Malmo we arrived in Landskrona, the hometown of the groom.  By day, it was an idyllic place dotted with colorful cottages, immaculate and colorful landscaping;  cobblestone streets and a small central square that was filled with a market on weekends.  At night, it's a sleepy town: on our walk to the hotel at 9:30 pm all the buildings were empty and dark, and not a soul was on the street.

Upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted with this adorable welcome bag filled with things like Swedish candy and also enjoyed a people filled reunion in the lobby.

The beautiful town of Landskrona and a view from outside the restaurant on the harbor:

The next morning we took a ferry ride to Ven, where the bride and groom had gotten engaged, to take a bike ride for the day around the island.

This was the view upon sailing in:

A cafe greeted us when we left the dock:

We hopped on a bike and were off:

Cycling through the countryside, there was farmland on one side and sea views on the other:

Other stops included, lunch by the water, a quaint church upon a hill with this view:

A pouring rain break where I put on a poncho and almost lost everyone, and a whiskey distillery.

We walked around the town of Landskrona upon our return.  Case in point, adorable cottages and perfect landscaping:

There was an open air museum that displayed traditional Swedish homes that were decorated with traditional embroidery and vignettes across from the Landskrona fort:

A walk around town

That evening was the rehearsal dinner that took place at the groom's home.  Check out the tent and water view from their second story balcony:

We took a small walk over to a neighbor's house to hold the actual wedding rehearsal.  I love what a small knit community they enjoy here:
Some of the bridesmaids at rehearsal dinner
I know I said I was going to split this up in three parts, but I have to dedicate a whole post to this wedding (and there is still Stockholm to see).  Come back and check it out, because it was a fantasy wedding that included lush scenery and a Swedish castle!

Headlands 50k

If you have never been out to the Marin headlands and taken highway 1 to Stinson Beach, you really are missing out on an awesome experience. It's really beautiful and the road is windy and the town of Stinson is idyllic. However, although driving there is fun, it's even more fun to run over the hill and get the sweeping views of the ocean from the top.

The Headlands 50k is 6,400 feet (according to Garmin; the website said it was 7,300) of climbing and is on firetrails and single trails and encompasses many of the classics (the Dipsea, Matt Davis, Miwok and Coastal trails, to name a few) of the area.

It starts near Muir Beach and the morning of the race was foggy and cool. Driving there, you take the windy road and it's slow going, creeping down toward the ocean without being able to see more than a couple car lengths in front of you. The race is put on by one of the local running teams and the organization of it was very good. It was a figure eight race, so we would end up back where we started.

My goal was to finish in around 6 hours, as this was less gain that Ohlone (8000 ft) where I finished in 6:30 and more than Skyline (5000 ft) where I finished in 5:09. Based on elevation, I was hoping to come in right in between the two. I would be happy if it were closer to the 5 hour mark than the 6, but would not mind anything in between.

We started on time and as always, went straight up. From Muir Beach, we went on a firetrail to the Coastal trail, which winds around the outside of the cliffs right near the water.

Coastal Trail
Coastal Trail

I made a friend as we were speed walking up the first hill and we hung together for a while, chatting. However, I tend to be faster on the uphills than the down, so I took off without her after a while, in order to keep my pace going. We wound down to Tennesee Valley and then back up the hill again, which was a trail I hadn't tried before, so it was a new adventure! After that, the trail went down to Rodeo Beach and my new friend caught back up to me. She was way faster than me on the downhills come to find out. We made it to the first aid station, where a random guy told us we were females number 7 and 8 overall.

From that aid station, she and I stuck together, keeping each other going. She would lead on the downhills and I would lead on the uphills. We arrived back at Tennesee Valley aid station (AS) together and her husband told me to keep her in line, even though I was struggling to catch up to her half the time. She had the cutest little family, three kids, the husband, the dog...the perfect cheering team! We didn't stay long at the AS, maybe 30 seconds, before heading back up the hill.

This was the big one. In the elevation profile, there were a few smaller climbs and then two very large ones in the last third of the race, which is generally where I have problems.

We climbed and climbed and climbed. Then we got to another aid station and I stopped to get some lube and all of a sudden my friend was gone. I hustled up to try to catch her. Once we reached the top of the hill, the way down was awesome. It's on a trail called the Matt Davis, which is covered with ferns and in the middle of a mossy forest. It's really pretty. However, we were not the only ones who thought so; there were a TON of hikers! I have to say, this race would be better if we did this section earlier, when there are less people.

At the bottom of this hill is Stinson Beach. By this time, I was starting to get tired, which didn't bode well for the next section. From there, we headed back up the famous Dipsea trail to another trail called the Steep Ravine. This trail was also very beautiful, but was also full of hikers. It also lived up to it's name; it was steep. Luckily some new friends were spectating from this trail and they gave me some words of encouragement as I chugged up the trail.

Once we got to the top of the second big hill, I would like to say it got easier, but downhill is not really my friend. However, I was (still!) trying to catch up to my friend and thought maybe I still had a chance, so I skipped the last aid station at the top of the hill and headed down toward the finish. The last few miles consisted of switchback after switchback and it was brutal. I probably got passed by about 15 people in this section, which really bummed me out. However, I could not move any faster!

I finally got to the bottom and gave it my all to pass ONE guy right before the finish. Yes! That really made up for all the ones who had passed me before. I finished in 5 hours and 55 minutes, just under my goal of 6 hours.

My new running friend beat me by 7 minutes! When I went up to talk to her after the race, she said that she had thought I was ahead of her the entire time and had been trying to catch up to me. Man, she was fast!

This was not my best finish. I usually end up in the top quarter overall; it was not so this time. However, it was pretty interesting to see what my splits were at the aid stations. Actually, I guess that there were not as many people passing me at the end as it seemed!

11.5 miles -- 85th
19.5 miles -- 71st
24.1 miles -- 58th
27.7 miles -- 59th
Finish -- 62/181

Age group: 4/15
Gender: 9/60

After the race there was pizza; it was so good! I also enjoyed an after race beer and had a great time hanging out, shooting the breeze with new friends, ie people who passed me or who I passed along the way. All in all, it was a great day on some of my favorite trails!

Do you have a favorite trail nearby? Or maybe just a place you like to go on the weekends?

Weekend Shannies: Fall is in the air!

This weekend was quite different than the last few. It was very low key and productive, and I was able to catch up on my rest. That was glorious! Last weekend, I did not sleep well at all and was up really early both days. This past week was stressful and emotional so I did not sleep good then either. Being able to sleep in and rest some really made me feel like a new person.

Originally Marq and I were supposed to go to Myrtle Beach to meet with a national franchise that Marq is considering buying. Friday evening that fell through so we stayed here. Friday night did not consist of much, just gym. After the gym, I was tired and Marq was exhausted so we cooked dinner and just hung out at home.

Saturday morning I slept in until 11! It was so nice. When I finally woke up Marq and I took off to town to tour a tanning salon he is considering purchasing (this gets tiring) then had a bunch of errands to run. We came back from all of that around 3. My house decided to take a nap after that. Look at my lazy babies!

While they napped, I got myself prepped for the week!

After about an hour we took off to the dog park. The weather was absolutely perfection! Hello fall! We had a great time.  There was a particular Pug that took to Marq and I, we loved him! I debated on taking him home. Heh.

After the dog park we all came back home, took showers, and got ready. Marquis and I decided to go see "Prisoners". It was really good, the acting was incredible. And I love Hugh and Jake. They define sexy. It is a really long movie though. We went to the 9 o'clock showing and did not get home until after midnight. I wore my new lace top from Venus. It's sexy, I love it!

This morning I woke up and Marquis surprised me with breakfast; egg white omelet with egg whites, turkey sausage, and cheese with a side of Special K Yogurt cereal. Yum! I went to spin class at noon, normally class is 45 minutes but today it was an hour. I pushed hard and man my legs are aching! After the gym I had a lot more errands to run. My grocery shopping alone takes 3 stops. Ugh!

Now I'm ready to make it a successful week! Food is prepped!

Tonight Marquis and I are cooked all of our chicken on the grill. I'm so glad because everything tastes so much better on the grill. I am making a side of baked beans and I also made a healthy potato salad. It's made with red potatoes and plain greek yogurt. It's packed with protein and complex carbohydrates - completely healthy for you and delicious. It's a win, win!

Now it is time for a little Sunday night relaxation!

Well, that's about it for me this weekend! Cheers!

History Bitches Fieldtrip #5: Mary Surratt's Boardinghouse and Mount Olivet Cemetery

Mary Elizabeth Jenkins Surratt, c. 1850
This Saturday, my friend George (of Bricktop podcast and Eater DC fame) and I drove out to Mount Olivet Cemetery; I wanted to photograph Mary Surratt’s grave. On July 7, 1865, Mary was bestowed the unlucky distinction of becoming the first woman executed by the U.S. government. She received this “honor” for her reputed participation in the conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln.

(Sen kalbime girseydin) söylenen bir şarkı. Bugünlerde MBLAQ "If you come into my heart" ismiyle bu şarkıyı tekrar modern versiyonuyla karşımızda. Ben eski halini daha çok sevdim ve paylaşmak istedim. Umarım siz de beğenirsiniz.

A Season of Change...

What a week. What a life.
Image Map

I feel like I have so much I want to say right now. I want to write my situation down on my blog, get out on paper, and get it out of my head. But I can't do that right now. There is a lot of uncertainty in my life and I feel a lot of hard changes coming. If there is one quote that has always stuck with me in life, it is this one:

and sometimes, a lot of times in life, I do not feel I follow this. I used too. But over the years I have transformed. I do not always like the person I have become. This probably does not make sense. Sometimes when your heart is speaking, your brain does not always translate the words and the feelings like it should.

More soon on that. Now, back to this week.

It has been a pretty quiet and calm week. I have been battling mood highs and lows because of all the change coming forth in my job. I had a job interview yesterday. It is for the Executive Assistant/Administration Director to the CEO of a Real Estate company. The CEO is an amazing woman. She was voted one of Charlotte's 50 most influential women and CEO's, and has won many, many awards in the real estate world. She started her company from the ground a mere 7 years ago and has grown it extraordinarily.

Yesterday was finally the interview. After completing an essay on why they should hire me followed by a personality test, I was called in for the interview.

When I went into it, I was pretty calm. I am used to interviews at this point. I have been trying on and off for a year for a new position. But in walks the CEO. She is very stern and intimidating. She knows what she wants and how she wants it done. Those are key components for a CEO so I do not know why I was surprised.

She had a thick stack of papers in her hands. She sat down in the conference room across the table from me and dove right into asking the standard questions. They were very difficult to answer. You guys probably know how that is. Describe a time where the outcome of a specific project did not align to the clients requests and how you elected to rectify the situation. Ugh, I hate that. I'm not good at that. She asks all of those type of questions for each job I have ever held. It was not going that great. I stuttered some, did not know exactly what to say, and I was just ready to walk out of the interview. Literally in the middle of her asking those questions, just get up and walk out. But I didn't.

Next we get to the paper filled with words. Upon her reading each word, I had to rate myself a 1-6. One meaning I'm not good at all and 6 meaning that I am superstar. I was doing OK I thought and then she says the word "pragmatic". I had no idea what that meant. She did not either, really. She thought about it for a second and kind of explained it. And I believe the definition is "your ability to think logically and realistically". I could Google to verify, but who cares.

Just as I thought the interview was a complete bomb and a complete waste of an uncomfortable outfit, she says the word "ambition". 1-6? I don't think think so. I say 7. She laughs and it breaks the ice a little. She tells me I did a good job on the test. Then we get down to the basics. I get to tell her all about me, my life, and what I want. I told her how I admired her accomplishments so much and I want to strive to be like that. I also talked a little about her company since I did my research and how I would fit and be able to help her grow her business even more.

Gosh, being an interview is the biggest sales pitch of ones life, ha.

After an hour and a half, we close our conversation. She has had the job I interviewed for posted for a month and a half. She did this because she wants to ensure she finds the right person. She also added that she deleted thousand's of Resume's sent to her because they did not follow the directions on the job posting. You could not just send them your Resume, you had to write the essay on why you would be a good fit then attach your Resume. She told me to set up reference appointments with each of my references so she could call them. She then added that as long as the references went well, she would do a criminal and credit background check, and be in touch.

My current supervisor told me he just got off the phone with her and she told him that he provided one of the best references she has ever heard. Now we wait. We will see what happens next.

Other than the interview, this week has been usual. Working and the gym. Marquis and I are leaving for Myrtle Beach on Saturday because we have a meeting with a franchise he is considering buying. It will be a short trip though, we are coming back Sunday.

How have you guys been this week?

The Pug Dog Theory

Do you ever feel like it is your birthday when you return something?
In our house we love to quote the scene from the movie "Life with Father" about the pug dog statue. We know it doesn't really work that way, but every time I return something it feels like a bonus! I have been tidying up things and we are at the point where we can finally return some of the extra supplies hanging around. Now I just have to figure out what to buy with all that money.......
