NOVEMBER 30 = Oscar Wilde Dies

"Morality does not help me. I am a born antinomian.* I am one
of those who are made for exceptions, not for laws. But while I
see that there is nothing wrong in what one does, I see that
there is something wrong in what one becomes. It is well that I
have learned this."

* = "antinomian": one who rejects a socially established morality.

Osacr Wilde's Demise

So wrote Oscar Wilde in March of 1897 in an exceptionally long letter to Lord Alfred Douglas. Wilde died of cerebral meningitis on
today's date November 30, 1900. The letter was posted from "H.M. Prison, Reading". It was there that the celebrated writer, poet and dramatist was confined following his conviction on charges of sodomy. It was Wilde's close relationship with Lord Douglas (pictured, right - whom he called "Bosie") that led to his downfall at the hands of the younger man's father, the Marquis of Queensbury (author of the famous boxing rules). Bosie is believed to be the basis for the title character in Wilde's novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray". The story tells of a very handsome young man who sees the inner-decay of his soul reflected in an oil painting which grows progressively more hideous with each passing day. That character has an older mentor who early in the story declares:

"I like persons better than principles, and I like persons with no principles better than anything else in the world."

Oscar Wilde and "Bosie"

The Marquess of Queensbury, a brutish and rude man, publicly accused Wilde of conducting a homosexual relationship with his son, Douglas (Wilde's "Bosie") by leaving his card at Wilde's club addressed to "Oscar Wilde posing as a sodomite (below)." Wilde sued the Marquess for libel, but that suit failed, when evidence of Wilde's other
homosexual activities surfaced. Counter-charges arose resulting in Wilde's conviction on charges of "gross indecency and sodomy," homosexual activity being very much a crime during this time. Wilde was sentenced to two years of hard labor.  It was during this time in prison that Wilde wrote the 50,000-word letter to Douglas from which a small fragment is quoted above. He was not allowed to send it while he was still a prisoner, but he did give it to an associate after his release with instructions to take it to Lord Douglas, but Douglas denied ever having received it. It's first complete publication came in 1962 with the publication of "The Letters of Oscar Wilde" from which it was quoted for this posting.

The Wit of Oscar Wilde

Wilde was known for his flowing wit, but one of his best moments came with two simple words in an exchange recorded by Barbara Tuchman:

"Since the death of Tennyson in 1895, the post (of Poet Laureate of England) had remained vacant....(many of the would-be) candidates were mediocrities, one of whom, Sir Lewis Morris, offered an opening to what a contemporary called 'the most spontaneously witty thing ever uttered in England'. Morris, who wanted the Laureateship badly, complained to Oscar Wilde, 'There is a conspiracy of silence against me, a conspiracy of silence. What ought I to do, Oscar?'

'Join it.' replied Wilde."

"Did I not tell you that we of the ruling class owned all the land, all the forest, everything? Any food-getter who would not get food for us, him we punished or compelled to starve to death. And very few did that. They preferred to get food for us, and make clothes for us, and prepare and administer to us a thousand—a mussel-shell, Hoo-Hoo—a thousand satisfactions and delights. And I was Professor Smith in those days—Professor James Howard Smith. And my lecture courses were very popular—that is, very many of the young men and women liked to hear me talk about the books other men had written.

"And I was very happy, and I had beautiful things to eat. And my hands were soft, because I did no work with them, and my body was clean all over and dressed in the softest garments—
"He surveyed his mangy goat-skin with disgust.

"We did not wear such things in those days. Even the slaves had better garments. And we were most clean. We washed our faces and hands often every day. You boys never wash unless you fall into the water or go swimming."

"Neither do you Granzer," Hoo-Hoo retorted.

"I know, I know, I am a filthy old man, but times have changed. Nobody washes these days, there are no conveniences. It is sixty years since I have seen a piece of soap.

"You do not know what soap is, and I shall not tell you, for I am telling the story of the Scarlet Death. You know what sickness is. We called it a disease. Very many of the diseases came from what we called germs. Remember that word—germs. A germ is a very small thing. It is like a woodtick, such as you find on the dogs in the spring of the year when they run in the forest. Only the germ is very small. It is so small that you cannot see it—"

Hoo-Hoo began to laugh.

"You're a queer un, Granser, talking about things you can't see. If you can't see 'em, how do you know they are? That's what I want to know. How do you know anything you can't see?"
"A good question, a very good question, Hoo-Hoo. But we did see—some of them. We had what we called microscopes and ultramicroscopes, and we put them to our eyes and looked through them, so that we saw things larger than they really were, and many things we could not see without the microscopes at all. Our best ultramicroscopes could make a germ look forty thousand times larger. A mussel-shell is a thousand fingers like Edwin's. Take forty mussel-shells, and by as many times larger was the germ when we looked at it through a microscope. And after that, we had other ways, by using what we called moving pictures, of making the forty-thousand-times germ many, many thousand times larger still. And thus we saw all these things which our eyes of themselves could not see. Take a grain of sand. Break it into ten pieces. Take one piece and break it into ten. Break one of those pieces into ten, and one of those into ten, and one of those into ten, and one of those into ten, and do it all day, and maybe, by sunset, you will have a piece as small as one of the germs." The boys were openly incredulous. Hare-Lip sniffed and sneered and Hoo-Hoo snickered, until Edwin nudged them to be silent.

The incubators are built in remote fastnesses, where there is little or no likelihood of their being discovered by other tribes. The result of such a catastrophe would mean no children in the community for another five years. I was later to witness the results of the discovery of an alien incubator.
The community of which the green Martians with whom my lot was cast formed a part was composed of some thirty thousand souls. They roamed an enormous tract of arid and semi-arid land between forty and eighty degrees south latitude, and bounded on the east and west by two large fertile tracts. Their headquarters lay in the southwest corner of this district, near the crossing of two of the so-called Martian canals.

As the incubator had been placed far north of their own territory in a supposedly uninhabited and unfrequented area, we had before us a tremendous journey, concerning which I, of course, knew nothing.

After our return to the dead city I passed several days in comparative idleness. On the day following our return all the warriors had ridden forth early in the morning and had not returned until just before darkness fell. As I later learned, they had been to the subterranean vaults in which the eggs were kept and had transported them to the incubator, which they had then walled up for another five years, and which, in all probability, would not be visited again during that period.

David Chillas -- Lithographer

Ad for David Chillas, c.1855
In February 2011, I did some cursory research and wrote a post about the Roseville Cotton Mill, which was located along White Clay Creek near Kirkwood Highway, just east of Newark. In the last paragraph of the post I mentioned that after its manufacturing days were over, the property seemed to have been sold to the Chillas family. I had all of two sentences about them, noting only that the owner appeared to be Scottish-born David Chillas, then later his son Arthur. Then the other night, while trolling around for something completely unrelated, I happened to come across the Chillas name again. At first I didn't believe it was the same person, but when I finally realized it was, I think my jaw did literally drop. It seems that Mr. Chillas had a surprising career before moving to Mill Creek Hundred.

David Chillas was born in Scotland about 1817, but eventually ended up in Philadelphia. There he became an artist and a printer -- a lithographer, to be precise. Lithography had first been developed just prior to 1800, and was popular throughout the 19th Century. Using a combination of acid, wax, water, and oil-based paints on a stone plate, lithography represented the first method that allowed artists to make multiple prints of the same high quality as the original. When chromolithography was developed around 1840, artists and printers could finally mass-produce color images. It was in these early days of chromolithography that David Chillas worked in Philadelphia.

It's unknown exactly when Chillas immigrated into the United States, but he was naturalized in Philadelphia in 1842. Before entering the graphic arts field, Chillas first worked for the North American Coal Company. His older brother Arthur had been president of the company since 1839. After marrying in late 1842, David and new wife Mary moved to Pottsville, PA, where he continued to work for the coal company for about ten years.

By 1852 Chillas was back in the City of Brotherly Love, when he entered into a partnership with lithographer Alphonse Brett, a French émigré. This partnership ended less than a year later in a very un-Brotherly Love-like court battle. Chillas then established his own firm, located at 50 S. Third Street. In no way do I claim to know very much about mid-19th Century lithography, but from what I can see Chillas was fairly successful and well known in his craft. According to this page from the Library Company of Philadelphia (from whence most of the info came), he mostly produced advertisements, cityscapes, and certificates. He also must have done some government work, because in 1858 (after he had left the field for, well, fields) he testified before Congress in some sort of an investigation into printing contracts.

Another of Chillas' works

Perhaps souring on the business world after these problems, David Chillas left the lithographic business and moved himself and his family (which by this point included children Louisa and Arthur) to a farm outside of Newark. Interestingly, as seen below, what appears to be the same property is listed on the 1849 map as "A. Chilles". I've combed the 1850 Census and can find no one with a name anything like that in the area. The name is just too close to be a coincidence, so I think that David's older brother Arthur must have purchased the farm as a rental property, then David bought it from him around 1856.

From the 1849 map. Note the "A. Chilles"
The same area in 1868, with D(avid) Chillas

As you can also see on the 1849 map, the Roseville Cotton Mill was still very much operating when Chillas first moved to the area. It is said to have closed sometime soon after the Civil War, which makes the advertisement below a bit of a mystery. It's offering "Water Power to Rent" and "30 cottages and fine residence", which must be the Roseville complex. It comes from the February 17, 1864 issue of the New York Herald, and lists David Chillas as one of the contacts. But since Hamilton Maxwell was still listed in a tax assessment from later that year as the owner of Roseville, I think Chillas was just listed because he was the nearest neighbor. However, I do think the family may have eventually bought the property.

From the New York Herald, Feb. 17, 1864

When David Chillas died in 1880, his son Arthur inherited the property. The 1881 map shows Arthur owning 208 acres, and appears to include the Roseville structures. Twelve years later, the 1893 map shows Arthur with 100 acres and A.E. Wiegand just below him with 107 acres. From these it looks as if the Chillases owned Roseville for a while (after the factory had shut down), then sold it.*

* - See the follow-up post here for more information about the Chillas family and Roseville.I don't know how long Arthur Chillas (or his children) stayed on the farm his father (and maybe his uncle before that) had bought. I'd venture to say, however, that no other farms in the area had been occupied by former big-city graphic artists. Scotsman David Chillas eventually ended up as just another Mill Creek Hundred farmer, but took a route there fascinatingly different from any of his neighbors. If nothing else, this is another great example of "You never know what you're liable to stumble on at any given moment".

NOVEMBER 29 = Nurse Fisher's Letter to Bereaved Mother

On today's date in 1918, a U.S. Army nurse wrote a letter to the bereaved mother of a soldier who died of influenza after surviving combat during the war.  The kindness of the nurse's gesture and the feeling with which she wrote have made the letter a classic of war correspondence.

Army Nurses During World War One

Over 25,000 of  America's women served in support of America's men over seas during World War One.  By 1918, there were over 12,000 nurses on active duty at some 198 stations world-wide.  Most of these women served in the European theater of operations.  During World War One, army nurses did not have officer's commissions but were appointed into the Army Nurse Corps.  Although I do not believe that they served in front-line areas (as with the M*A*S*H units of the Korean War and later), they were close enough to the action to come under air attack, and even occasional enemy artillery fire. While none of  the nurses were killed in such action, several were wounded.  And some were awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in recognition of there valiant service.  This was also the time of the world-wide influenza epidemic of 1918, which killed over 18 million people around the globe.  Many of these victims were soldiers.

Maude Fisher and Richard Hogan

Such was the case with a U.S. Army private serving in France during 1918.  Private Hogan had survived front-line combat unscathed.  But only a few days after the Armistice was declared, like so many soldiers, he came down with influenza.  One of the nurses who tended to his condition was one Maude Fisher.  Private Hogan put up a brave struggle with the disease, joking and winning the affection of Miss Fisher as well as the other nurses in his ward.  Sadly, within two weeks of his being admitted to the hospital, Private Richard Hogan died of influenza.  Realizing that his mother would just receive a tersely-worded notification from the War Department, Nurse Maude Fisher decided to write the following beautiful letter to Hogan's mother:

"November 29th, 1918

My dear Mrs. Hogan:

If I could talk to you I could tell you so much better about your son's last sickness, and all the little things that mean so much to a mother far away from her boy.

"Your son was brought to this hospital on the 13th of November very sick with what they called Influenza. This soon developed into Pneumonia. He was brave and cheerful though, and made a good fight with the disease. Several days he seemed much better, and seemed to enjoy some fruit that I brought him. He did not want you to worry about his being sick, but I told him I thought we ought to let you know, and he said all right.

"He became very weak towards the last of his sickness and slept all the time. One day while I was visiting some of the other patients he woke up and seeing me with my hat on asked the orderly if I was his sister come to see him. He was always good and patient and the nurses loved him. Everything was done to make him comfortable and I think he suffered very little, if any pain.

"He laughed and talked to the people around him as long as he was able.... The last time I saw him I carried him a cup of hot soup, but he was too weak to do anything but taste it, and went back to sleep.

"The Chaplain saw him several times and had just left him when he breathed his last on November 25th, at 2:30 in the afternoon.  He was laid to rest in the little cemetery of Commercy, and sleeps under a simple white wooden cross among his comrades who, like him, have died for their country. His grave number is 22, plot 1. His aluminum identification tag is on the cross, and a similar one is around his neck, both bearing his serial number, 2793346.

"The plot of the grave in the cemetery where your son is buried was given to the Army for our boys and the people of Commercy will always tend it with loving hands and keep it fresh and clean. I enclose here a few leaves from the grass that grows near in a pretty meadow.

"A big hill overshadows the place and the sun was setting behind it just as the Chaplain said the last prayer over your boy.  He prayed that the people at home might have great strength now for the battle that is before them, and we do ask that for you now.  The country will always honor your boy, because he gave his life for it, and it will also love and honor you for the gift of your boy, but be assured, that the sacrifice is not in vain, and the world is better today for it.

"From the whole hospital force, accept deepest sympathy and from myself, tenderest love in your hour of sorrow.

Sincerely,

Maude B. Fisher"

The nurses who cared for soldiers who, like Private Hogan, suffered from influenza were not in any way immune to the disease.  Some 200 of them died of the disease which they contracted from caring for soldiers who had it.

How Jackie Kennedy Taught Us to Grieve

Last week, on November 22, 2013, Americans commemorated the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Fifty years ago today, his traumatized widow Jackie, beckoned Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Theodore White to the family’s Hyannis Port compound for an exclusive interview. Following her husband’s murder, the erstwhile first lady intended to retreat from the public eye. Yet, before she withdrew, Jackie needed to speak to America one final time. She designated White, considered Kennedy-friendly, to be her mouthpiece.

After Jackie’s telephone call, White high-tailed it up north. Anticipating the exposé, his editors at LIFE kept the presses open; it cost $30,000/hour. As The New York Post remarked, to do this for a story that wasn't composed, based on an interview that hadn’t transpired was unheard of. Nevertheless, a heart-to-heart with the slain president’s spouse was the of news story a lifetime!

Chatting with Jackie, White characterized her bearing, “Composure . . . beautiful . . . dressed in trim black slacks . . . beige pullover sweater . . . eyes wider than pools . . . calm voice.” During the next 3.5 hours, she chronicled that horrific day just a week earlier, before disclosing her purpose. She was fearful of JFK’s legacy being minimized or tarnished by critics. Steadfast in her vision of how Americans should think of the country’s fallen leader, Jackie disclosed one of the couple’s favorite nighttime routines.

Before bed, JFK enjoyed playing albums, in particular the cast recording for 1960’s smash Broadway musical, Camelot. His favorite lyrics, crooned by Richard Burton, were, “Don't let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot.” On reflection, Jackie imagined those sentimental lines encapsulated her husband’s presidency. She affirmed, “There'll be great presidents again — and the Johnsons are wonderful, they've been wonderful to me — but there'll never be a Camelot again.”

By equating JFK with this contemporary version of the Arthurian myth, Jackie was conjuring the depiction of the 35th president that’s endured the last half century. This reinterpretation, inspired by T. H. White’s The Once and Future King, accentuated the futility of war, reimagining the fabled monarch as peace-seeking visionary. Accordingly, this is how Jackie envisioned Americans remembering their lost commander-in-chief, a crusader who’d forfeited his life in pursuit of global harmony.

Later, White divulged both he and publishing supervisors were reluctant to disseminate Jackie’s Camelot analogy, but she was unyielding. Additionally, he consented to letting his interviewee make adjustments to the essay. Around 2 a.m., with Jackie lingering nearby, White dictated his editorial over the kitchen telephone. With subscriptions around 30 mil., “For President Kennedy: An Epilogue,” was undoubtedly consumed by innumerable readers. Subsequently, as Jackie had desired, JFK’s presidency would be immortalized as unequalled Camelot.

Undeniably, Jackie’s comparison has faults. Though JFK professed “Mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind,” he similarly asserted “The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission.” His participation in the calamitous Bay of Pigs Invasion and resolution to “draw a line in the sand” concerning Vietnam only further separates him from Jackie’s antiwar idealist. Furthermore, by reworking JFK into what James Piereson labeled “the consummate liberal idealist” whose accomplishments would always be unsurpassed, Jackie made it tougher for the grief-stricken nation to move ahead. If what she contended was true, and there'd “never be another Camelot,” where could the nation go but downwards?

From this unfathomable tragedy came Jackie Kennedy’s longest-lasting achievement. Had JFK lived, her most noteworthy accomplishment might be renovating the White House and infusing timeless glamour into the American presidency. Instead, her legacy’s become that of scrupulously manufacturing how Americans recollect her husband. It’s a vision of the much-loved president many continue to embrace, even revere, today.
