Madagascar - An Island Nation in the Indian Ocean

Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar, an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeast coast of Africa, at the height of Mozambique. It is also the largest island in Africa and the fourth largest in the world. It is separated from the mainland by the Mozambique Channel. It is noteworthy that the island was once joined to Africa, which was separated. This led to the isolation and cause many unique species in the world. Thus, home to 58% of animal and plant species in the world (of which 80% are endemic to Madagascar). Of the more notable are the lemur infra-order of which are primates, the carnivorous fossa, three endemic bird families and six endemic baobab. It is within the list of mega-diverse countries.

Climate
Madagascar is located in the tropical climate of the South Equatorial Current. The precipitation in continuously from east to southwest. Rain fall on the west coast is sometimes only 500 millimeters per year, while it may be on the east coast region once before 4000 mm. The average annual temperature is 25 degrees celsius. Higher temperatures are on the coasts, but in inland highlands temperatures can fall below the freezing point.

Flora
Due to its long geographical isolation, Madagascar is home to a unique fauna and flora with a very high proportion of endemic species. Before the arrival of the first settlers the island was probably almost completely forested. The coastal zones are covered by tropical lowland rainforest. Of the original rain forests, only 4% are obtained. The largest contiguous areas of rainforest that still exist, lie on the Masoala peninsula. From east to west, the rain forest passes gradually over the savannah in the dry and in the south and thorn savanna.

Two Times Happier

Happy New Year everyone!

Here in Hong Kong it is 16 hours ahead of California, so I figured it out: I could actually celebrate New Years here and then hop right on a plane and go home and celebrate it there. It is a 14 hour flight so it would be cutting it close, but I could make it! However, I think instead I will watch the fireworks and maybe the ball drop in Times Square. That's Times Square, Hong Kong. Yes they have one too! So when it's 8 am, or 9 am or whatever time it is where you are from, think of me, bringing in the New Year.

A couple of interesting things about Hong Kong:

- when I see a Louis Vitton handbag or a North Face jacket, I assume it is fake. They do sell the real stuff, but why would you buy a 3000 dollar LV handbag when you can get the knock off for 300?

- they have an EXCELLENT transportation system here. You can even check your bags IN THE CITY and then take a fast train to the airport, turning a one hour taxi ride into a 20 minute train ride. The train opens up and you walk RIGHT INTO the correct terminal.

- they have mobile phone chargers in the train stations. With all the cords, not just an outlet. So even if you don't have your cord, its NO PROBLEM. They have it covered.

- You can almost walk around the entire city above ground. You know how Minneapolis has the skyways so you don't have to be cold when you are walking? They have the same thing here, but just to get you over the multi lanes of traffic. I still haven't figured it out though and sometimes I walk into a building hoping they have the overpass but instead just get looked at/followed by the security guy.

That's it so far! Happy New Year to all!

Ye Olde New Year

Yup, thats right folks , we've managed to survive the financial crunch, Y2K, Swine flu and Nuclear apocalypse to be here today. One day separates us from the year 2011. I'm wondering why I even care about it, its just a new year for God's sake ! But, you might as well just go with the flow. I've noticed that a lot of people, (my fellow bloggers included) have developed a list of their fondest moments in 2010 (same thing with the newspapers, sadly that isn't available in mine this year :( . Alright - Back to the story :

Number 10 on my list - The Icelandic Volcano Eruption, Don't ask me to spell it  I CAN BARELY pronounce the first 4 letters !! I liked that event because it showed how a little tiny itsy bitsy act of God (even in the form of a volcanic eruption) can practically shut us down (LITERALLY , I mean all the airports were down and out :) ).

Number 9 on my list - Swine Flu , don't get the idea that I supported Swine Flu. I'm just stating how it had affected my area of life (by giving me a month holiday :P ) but stealing another 2 months away from me >.>

Number 8 on my list - The FIFA World cup 2010 , who could forget that ? Quite an annoyance = Damn you Vevuzuela !! Spain pulled up the upset win as being the first World Cup champions to be beaten in the first round by the people who've invented Swiss Cheese.

Number 7 on my list - Harry Potter, yesh I was looking forward to the movie all year. Considering I already read the book, it was boring =.= . Lucky for me, David Yates knows how to direct a movie :D

Number 6 on my list - How to Train My Dragon - Most EPIC Cartoonish Comedical Movie Ever ! (First to Shrek :)

Number 5 - The 33 Chilean Miners being rescued- As being a person who listened to the rescue LIVE on BBC World Service, it was a nice sigh of relief to me and the world. FINALLY , some good news :)

Number 4 on my list - The Wikileaks Guy , Julian Assange - Most talked about person in the world , wanted by all , stuck in a prison cell in London .

Number 3 on my list - A truly sad moment was the Oil Leak from that damned Oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, not only did it lead to millions in damage but also lead to the death of countless number of plantlife and animals.

Number 2 - My brother's graduation , truly a proud moment :)

Number 1 - The release of World of Warcraft : CATACLYSM - EPIC expansion pack :) Yes I know, I'm addicted to this game. But its too good :(

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY

Hotel Spotlight: Inn and Spa at Loretto

I was sold on a single image.  I googled Santa Fe before our recent trip, and the photograph from this post popped up.  I immediately booked a room at the Inn & Spa at Loretto.

The hotel’s exterior is highly photographed (some websites claim it is the most photographed spot in Santa Fe) as it’s modeled after the Taos Pueblo and who wouldn’t want to stay in a modern day pueblo while in Santa Fe?
It was a bonus to find that this hotel is smack dab in the center of all of the sites of interest: the Central Plaza, the oldest Church and House, as well as Canyon Road.  We were upgraded upon arrival gratis, and greeted with impeccable service and recommendations throughout our stay.

Oldest House and Church in the United States

It has been quite some time since Southwest decor was all the rage, and it’s not something I would personally use in my own home, but as they say “when in Rome,”  and in Santa Fe I wouldn’t even consider staying anywhere that wasn’t representative of the city and Southwestern style itself.
One thing that distinctly lingers from Thom Filicia’s talk at the Laguna Design Center was this advice: when conceptualizing your design, you should consider the context of the location.  It follows, that if you are in Santa Fe you wouldn’t really want to build or stay in a French Chateau.

The newly renovated Loretto Inn had all the trappings of Southwest decor, interpreted literally in the room: iron oxide hued walls, Native American inspired patterned blankets with a similarly painted border.

But interpreted with a refreshing twist that I delighted in, at their restaurant Luminaria: white beams, gray walls, gray rattan chairs with crisp white cushions, wide plank light wood floors, banquettes with orange pillows all with Native American symbols, wood fixtures with lit candles scattered on the wall; and of course, no Santa Fe restaurant is complete without paying homage to the local art and artists by hanging their work on the walls.

Santa Fe is a sleepy town, not a place I would recommend for a night owl, our nightly activities included wandering through the lobbies (and sometimes rooms) of other hotels, and we found that the Inn & Spa at Loretto was our favorite and will definitely be our go-to hotel upon a return trip.
