The Place Cafe

The Place Cafe was located near East 9th Street at 908 Parade Street, within the German community of Erie. August Seus was the proprietor and was well known within the community by his nickname Gus. People often referred to the Place Cafe as Gus Cafe. The cafe served wine, beer, sandwiches and soup. The cafe played a vital role within the community during the Great Depression of the 1930s, providing ox-tail soup for a nickel at all hours, in an effect operating as a soup kitchen. The cafe also had a standing bar where everyone could gather, have a drink and socialize.
August Seus was born in Hammett, Erie County, in 1883, and was married to Mary Ebach Seus. Mary, along with the family, ran a bed and breakfast in Greene Township, while August worked in town. During the Great Depression, August worked at the slaughter house to make ends meet at the cafe. In 1942 he worked for awhile for Terry Reagan at Reagan's Cafe, which was located at 913 Parade Street, a couple of doors away from the Place Cafe. August Seus passed away in 1972.

Koruma-Kullanma Dengesi Açısından Durusu(Terkos) Gölü ve Çevresinin Değerlendirmesi
Doğal kaynakları kullanırken en çok göz önünde bulundurulması gereken husus kaynakların sürdürülebilir kullanımı olmalıdır. Doğal kaynakların birçoğu sınırsız rezerve sahip olmadıklarından dolayı kontrolsüz kullanımları ve tahribatları sonucunda geri dönüşü olmayan zararlar ortaya çıkabilmektedir. Durusu (Terkos) Gölü de bugün kullanımdan ve planlamadan doğabilecek büyük sorunlar ile tehdit altındadır. İstanbul’a ikinci bir su yolu kazandırılması amacıyla yapılması planlanan “Kanal İstanbul” projesi Durusu Gölü üzerinde şimdiye kadar Türkiye tarihinde görülmemiş bir kullanım etkisine sahip olacaktır. Zira bu proje kapsamında Türkiye tarihinde ilk kez bir göl 2 farklı denizi birleştirmek amacıyla bir güzergâh olarak kullanılacaktır. Kuzey’de Karadeniz, Güney’de Marmara Denizi’ne doğru açılacak olan Kanal İstanbul projesinin Karadeniz’e yakın olan kısmındaki bölümü Durusu Gölü kullanılarak tamamlanacak ve buraya bir liman yapılacaktır. İstanbul’un su kullanımında önemli bir yeri olan Durusu Gölü üzerinde böyle bir planlama yapılması İstanbul halkının su ihtiyaçlarının karşılanması aşamasında ciddi problemleri de beraberinde getirecektir. Aynı zamanda Durusu Gölü’nün kimyasal yapısının değişmesi sebebiyle çevresinde bulunan doğal çevre de olumsuz etkilenecek ve bu etkiler bir daha ortadan kaldırılamayacak kadar büyük zararlara sebep olacaktır.

Henry Baker's Christmas
I had called upon my friend Sherlock Holmes the second morning after Christmas, with the intention of wishing him the compliments of the season. -- "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle"
On this Blue Carbuncle Day, and every Blue Carbuncle Day, I wonder about Henry Baker.
Everybody else in "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle" had this story got a wonderful after-Christmas present. But Henry Baker? We're not so sure. Consider:
Peterson, the commissionaire, got a fat Christmas goose.
The Countess of Morcar got her gem back.
James Ryder got away with grand theft.
John Horner undoubtedly would be cleared, according to Holmes.
Sherlock Holmes got the pleasure of an interesting case.
And Dr. Watson got the pleasure of hunting with Holmes once again.
But of Mr. Henry Baker we hear no more once he has received his replacement goose and ceased to be a factor in his case. Did he live happily ever after with Mrs. Henry Baker?
Holmes deduced that the original goose was a peace-offering to Mrs. B. For what offense? We don't know. But it doesn't take a Sherlock Holmes to deduce the involvement of alcohol, of which the formerly foresighted Henry was too fond.
Let us hope that the undoubtedly long-suffering wife accepted the goose in the contrite spirit in which it was intended, restoring harmony to the Baker household. After all, it was Christmas.

I have a few more Christmasy pictures to squeeze in before the new year! Here is my tinsel Shiny Brite wreath from last year re-invented. I couldn't figure out a good way to store it with all the ornaments attached so I took them all off at the end of the year. But I figured I would want to do something different this year anyway. The little red metal bell was this year's inspiration. At some point I had picked the bell up at an estate sale and it floated around the house most of the year. Now it is it's time to shine!
Another estate sale find (the same sale I got the aprons from in my last post!), was this set of mini Shiny Brites. I was so excited to find them as I knew they would be perfect for my metal tree!
I love looking all the different designs.....
I think this one might be my favorite!
I am not sure if I will be back until after the first week of January. I have the week between Christmas and New Year off and am hoping to get the Brick House done!

- Karışımı tamamladıktan sonra bir kaba yayın ve üzerine biraz zeytinyağı gezdirip servis edebilirsiniz. Afiyet olsun.
