Paphos District Court has ordered the immediate halt of illegal works undertaken by the honorary consulate for the Russian Federation, in the community of Tala, Paphos.
It appears that Consulate Georgios Prodromou and the company Aerotrans Aviation & Tours Limited had applied for planning licences to divide the specific area into building plots. The application was denied as the area was found to be without safe and easy public access.
The Town Planning Department pointed out that the only road to the area – a dead end – was totally unsuitable for access to the area due to the road’s extreme elevation levels which basically placed the proposed area for development on a cliff.
In a letter dated May 18, 2016, the Town Planning Department informed Prodromou that in order for the necessary licences to be issued, he would be required to sign a binding agreement committing him to undertake the necessary technical works in order to make the existing road network suitable for accessing the proposed area.
The Town Planning Department again denied Prodromou the works permits after he pointed out that the road was a ‘public road’ and suggested he be given the necessary permits while the Tala Community Council found ways of addressing the problem. Town Planning told Prodromou that it was not clear when or if the Tala Community Council could carry out such works.
It seems that despite the Department’s refusal to issue the necessary permits, works started on the site which has included the burial of three large containers.
Tala residents say that the entire hillside has been destroyed while expressing the fear that the works and containers could give way if it rains, further noting that the area in question is very close to an amphitheatre used for Pafos2017 events.
