Led by Yesim Peddy, who never stops smiling, we rocked to a variety of music, from Lorde to Aerosmith, as we poured our inner rock stars into a vibrant, effective workout using hollow drumsticks called Ripstix®.
Ripstix®, which are lightly weighted, are engineered specifically for exercising so that POUND® transforms drumming into an incredibly effective way of working out.
Instead of listening to music, you become the music in this exhilarating full-body workout that combines cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and Pilates-inspired movements.
It wasn’t that hard to follow, and even though I think I’m fit, POUND worked a lot of muscles I didn’t realize I had.
POUND is designed for all fitness levels, provides the perfect atmosphere for letting loose, getting energized, toning up and rockin’ out! The workout is easily modifiable and the alternative vibe and welcoming philosophy appeals to men and women of all ages and abilities.
What Does POUND Do For You?
- It helps you drum your way to a leaner, slimmer physique – all while rocking out to your favorite music!
- It burns calories -- up to 900 an hour.
- It strengthens and sculpts infrequently used muscles
- It improves your rhythm, timing, coordination, speed, agility, endurance, and musicality.
- It cinches the waistline, slims the thighs, and strengthens connective tissue and muscles with the combination of stability and cardio.
- It boosts your brain! Studies show drumming has powerful brain-boosting, stress-relieving effects of drumming. The rhythm permeates the brain to improve focus, increase higher-level thinking and decision-making skills, boost the immune system, lower blood pressure, decrease chronic pain, anxiety, and fatigue.
I finished the workout feeling invigorated, and a little like I’d just been to a rock concert. Next time I might let out a scream or two, a la Steven Tyler! Will I see you there?
THE FACTS ABOUT POUND®

When: Tuesdays at 8 AM
Where: BPRC Bergen Peak Room. Just drop in and pay at the Front Desk, where they will hand you your Ripstix.

POUND
POUND, a full-body cardio jam session inspired by drumming, launches Tuesday, Jan. 23. It uses weighted drumsticks called "ripstix" and taps to the beat of great, motivational music while improving strength and flexibility. It will put a smile on your face! Learn about POUND.
NEW! Rock Steady Boxing
Rock Steady Boxing, for people with mobility problems, especially Parkinson's Disease, empowers patients to fight back against the condition. Parkinson's is a chronic progressive neurological disease marked by tremor of resting muscles, rigidity, slowness of movement, impaired balance, and a shuffling gait.
Studies show that rigorous exercise that emphasizes gross motor movement, balance, core strength and range of motion can help Parkinson's patients slow the disease's progression and improve their daily living skills. Rock Steady uses heavy bags, speed bags, and boxing gloves, and is aimed at every age group, including the elderly. Even patients in wheelchairs can benefit, says EPRD's Fitness Specialist, Susan Wescott.
"I personally just feel that the mental aspect is the biggest benefit," says Susan, who recently got certified to teach Rock Steady Boxing. We can say we are kicking Parkinson's butt. That's why we are here: to fight back!"

Help EPRD Envision the Future of the Evergreen Lake North Trail

Evergreen Park & Recreation District (EPRD) invites you to attend a
Public Meeting Thursday, Jan. 11
to discuss our vision for the future of the Evergreen Lake North Trail.
The meeting will be held from 5-7 PM at Buchanan Park Recreation Center (Bergen Peak Room), 32003 Ellingwood Trail, Evergreen, CO 80439.
The District will discuss its vision for the trail's future, present long-term alternatives and solicit community input. EPRD will also provide background about the trail, including:
- what happened to force its closure,
- what has been going on since then,
- what the District has done to improve the trail,
- plans for the future.
A follow-up public meeting is planned for March.
First, a little background ...
Short-Term Fix
As you probably know, the trail section between Upper Bear Creek Road and the Evergreen Dam along Highway 74 was reopened Nov. 30 after being closed for more than a year and a half due to instability.
So yes, you can use the trail ... for now. This short-term fix is not expected to last beyond five years.
Long-Term Solutions
What's next? EPRD is looking for alternatives that will last long-termand meet the needs of the trail's diverse users and our growing community. At the public meeting, we will show you some conceptual alternative solutions and you will have an opportunity to provide feedback.
About the Trail Project
The District is working with OV Consulting, a trail project consultant, on the Evergreen Lake North Trail Project. We launched the project in response to the spring 2016 closure of 1,200 feet of the trail, which is located on property owned by the City and County of Denver and managed, through intergovernmental agreements, by EPRD. Details and trail updates can be found here.
Planning Phases I and II have been funded by Great Outdoors Colorado's Connect Initiative Trail Planning Grant Program. GOCO's Connect Initiative increases access to the outdoors in communities across Colorado and fills gaps in important trail systems.
About GOCO
Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) invests a portion of Colorado Lottery proceeds to help preserve and enhance the state's parks, trails, wildlife, rivers and open spaces. GOCO's independent board awards competitive grants to local governments and land trusts, and makes investments through Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Created when voters approved a Constitutional Amendment in 1992, GOCO has since funded more than 4,500 projects in urban and rural areas in all 64 counties without any tax dollar support. Visit GOCO.org for more information.
We'll see you on Jan. 11! Please tell your friends!
Evergreen Lake North Trail is OPEN ... thanks to EPRD's Parks Department!

Meet Heart Cameron, EPRD's Park Operations Manager.
Heart and his crew, working with the Evergreen Metropolitan District, are the reason the Evergreen Lake Trail between Upper Bear Creek Road and Evergreen Dam along Highway 74 is finally open!
They have been working diligently to replace a bin wall (a U-shaped underground support structure) that had crumbled almost completely to dust because of 30 years of use and a lot of water, leaving the trail unsupported and unsafe.
They also set anchors to complete maintenance on the handrails and resurfaced the trail.
What's that in Heart's hand in the picture below? The last remaining bit of bin wall. We may mount it on the wall at Park Ops HQ!
This Should Last a While
But it's not over. This is a creative short-term solution that gets the trail open for the community. We may still need to do maintenance from time to time on the trail, so expect occasional short closures.
EPRD continues to work on the planning phases of a long-term solution for the trail system. Please monitor EPRD's website for updates.
We highlighted the piece of wall so you can see the only piece of bin wall that had survived. The rest had crumbled to dust. |
The trail is open for your use! |

Maintaining a Long-Term Healthy Routine
By Guest Blogger Travis White
people who suffer addiction typically feel tired, depleted and often depressed. When
you’re trying to incorporate a healthier way of living, as a recovering addict, these
changes don’t come without their share of difficulties. However, true health is possible
by incorporating these tips for a well-lived life.
Create An Exercise Regimen
Source: Pixabay.com |
Exercise has profound benefits for the body, such as increased energy, improved quality of sleep and better management of stress levels. With each step that you take, feel-good hormones help keep your mental health in check and encourages self-confidence. It’s a chain reaction; the more confident you feel, the more you’re likely to get up and move. The more you move, the better you feel.
Establish a Self Care Routine
Self-care also has a positive impact on our lives because it provides us with the ability to self-soothe, especially during stressful times. Traditional exercise, such as unning, biking, swimming, to more gentler forms like reading a book, taking a nap, going to the salon, yoga, and meditation, betters our mental state and helps us to avoid relapse by rewiring our brains to think more positively.Self-care can also boost our self-esteem, according to Healthy Place. When combined with daily practices that provide a sense of calm, you are giving yourself room to increase pleasure in your life. When you carefully incorporate things you enjoy, you’ll help decrease depression and anxiety.
Get Adequate Sleep
According to the National Sleep Foundation, a 10 to 20-minute daily nap may help to elevate alertness, performance, and mood. Too little sleep can inversely spur illness, shorten our lifespan and increase cortisol levels which lead to weight gain. Sleep gives the brain a chance to heal and recuperate from substance abuse so It’s important to get at least 7-9 hours in, which will help keep you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed throughout the day.Addiction has always been linked to improper sleep habits. Using sleep aids can disrupt your body’s circadian rhythms and leads to daytime sleepiness which increases one’s inability to maintain self-control. Indecisiveness and worsened anxiety are also side effects of not acquiring enough slumber. While sleep aids are generally unharmful to most people, they can become deadly or lead to more addictions or relapses.
Proper Nutrition
Healthy eating and exercise go hand in hand because without proper fuel, your body cannot run as efficiently. Nutrition affects every part of your body, from your brain down to the cellular level, which helps stave off certain cravings while providing your body with the nutrients it needs.
Consuming fruits and vegetables, grains, as well as nuts and fish, that contain omega-3’s will not only help combat diseases such as depression and dementia but when followed by adequate hydration, nutritious foods help to flush out unsightly toxins, which helps recovering addicts to heal much faster. These same foods can also have a huge impact on your skin and have medicinal properties that help to reduce cravings and recalibrate your brain.
Incorporating healthy habits daily into your life will not only combat addictions but will help change your entire outlook. There’s only one you, so treat yourself and your body with love by staying fit and implementing these helpful tips into your daily routine.
