The police on Monday launched a new, week-long campaign against drunk driving.
Speaking to state radio, Traffic Police Chief Phillipos Papaelias said the campaign would continue until and including Sunday.
“Driving under the influence is one of the most prevalent reasons for accidents and now that more people are on leave from work they are also likely to be going out or visiting friends more,” Papaelias noted, continuing: “We say yes, go ahead and have fun but if you are going to drink, don’t drive”.
The Traffic Police Chief suggested people get themselves and their families home in taxis if there was no sober person to drive. “You must keep yourself safe, your family safe, and also consider all the other people on the road,” Papaelias said.He also noted that while emphasis was being put on drunk driving this week, it did not mean that the police would be turning a blind eye to other offences.
“Our aim is to have a presence on the road these days, to be there to help people and prevent accidents to reduce the number of deaths and the resulting pain for the families left behind,” Papaelias said.
