In the Southeastern Mediterranean, off Crete, at the 28th meridian, where Turkey with illegal NAVTEX bound sea area, warships are currently sailing from a total of eight countries.
With terrifying firepower, equipped with surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missiles, reinforced with special electronic warfare systems, they can "blind" ships and helicopters, with torpedoes and with ready-made Marines on their crews.
All these warships are located in a small maritime area, opposite each other, monitoring the movements of one fleet or another and with military tankers coming and going supplying their engines with oil.
There are many days when all these vessels are in this area. Every day that passes, instead of decreasing the tension, the number of warships increases, with the addition of young people from third countries who have noticed that there is tension in this mediterranean region and have come to see exactly what is happening and to record the movements. It is reminiscent of a bit of a Cold War era, since perhaps for the first time since the "Oruc Reis" crisis, a Russian spy ship reportedly appeared in the area.
However, Russian warships likely to be in Syria as well as Russian nuclear-powered submarines should also be counted.
Turkey took out its entire fleet in the region, supposedly to protect the research "Oruc Reis", which yesterday was found 50 nautical miles inside the Greek continental shelf, with a southwest course (2-4-0) and a speed of 40 knots. A total of 40 warships have turkey in this region and about as many as Greece has by monitoring the movements of the Turkish fleet.
All types of warships available in Greece are involved. From frigates and destroyers to support ships, missiles and submarines. However the area is small and the risks for an accident are great. After all, the Prime Minister himself warned of the risk of an accident in his last statement. Let us not forget the "warm episode" that occurred between the frigates "Lemnos" and "Kemal Reis", which did not take dimensions because of the composure, professionalism and seaship shown by the captain of "Lemnos" Commander Saliaris.
But they're not the only ships in the region.
There are also German warships, such as the frigate, meko type, "Hamburg", which is involved in operation "Peace" for the arms embargo on Libya, as well as the general support ship "Berlin", which is currently in the heart of the Aegean by participating in the NATO force in the Aegean controlling refugee flows.
Further south are ships of the Egyptian fleet, protecting the Egyptian EEZ and the gas deposits discovered there.
Off Cyprus are two French warships, which were recently off Crete and participated in exercises with the Greek frigates: the frigate "Lafayette" (with scalp – long-range missiles) and the helicopter "Tonnere" (with state-of-the-art helicopters, but also with marines) which has just delivered humanitarian aid to the long-suffering Lebanon and patrols the Eastern Mediterranean.
Israel has a permanent naval presence in the region, which has recently conducted joint naval exercises with the Navy and in particular at the "Karavia" shooting range in the Myrtoos Sea. The Israeli Navy is closely monitoring what is happening in eez Cyprus
The American "beasts"
For some 24 hours now, the U.S. has been sending ferocious warships to Souda. The helicopter (ship – floating base) "USS Hersel "Woody" Williams"is already located in Crete. It is tied to the K-14 platform (where nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines usually dock) and will remain for a long time, which means that in future it will give work to the Greek shipyards.
Just yesterday he made his appearance in Souda and another ferocious American warship. It is the catamaran "USNSCarson City", which last year had come back to the Aegean Sea and even tied to Syros, Rhodes and other islands.
