TEN NEW CASES TODAY

 Filenews 26 August 2020

10 new incidents announced Wednesday. The Ministry of Health informs that, according to an update received today by the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit from contracting laboratories, a total of 3,207 laboratory diagnoses identified 10 new cases of COVID-19 disease.

In detail, virus-positive individuals emerged as follows:

  • Of 1,903 samples taken as part of a passenger and repatriated check, 1 case was identified.
  • Of 117 samples taken through the process of tracing contacts of already confirmed cases, 4 cases were identified.
  • Of 755 samples taken through a private initiative, 3 cases were identified.
  • Of 68 samples taken as part of the migrant structure control programme, 2 cases were identified.

The 10 new incidents resulted from the following programmes:

  • 2 x control of migrant structures: These are people who came from Syria via Turkey and occupied. They're not related to each other. They were transferred to Eden.
  • 3 x private initiative:
  1. One person is a Spanish permanent resident of Cyprus who came from Spain on 14/8. She has no symptoms and repeated the test 48 hours before the end of her quarantine to be released in accordance with the relevant Decree.
  2. The second person is the football player announced yesterday by the COP. He took the test as part of the club's audit of his players. He reported symptoms yesterday.
  3. The third person took the test because of symptoms that they had had from 22/8.
  • 4 x contact tracing, 2 of which are from a private initiative:
  1. The 2 people are in contact of yesterday's case which has a recent travel history in Mykonos. Today's 2, together with yesterday's and 4th person announced as a case on 21/8 (from the airport check) had returned from Mykonos on 20/8. So it's a cluster of four people with a travel history. They're asymptomatic, and they took the test privately.
  2. The other 2 people are a couple of Lithuanian tourists who came to Cyprus on 21/8. On 22/8 they had symptoms and contacted the Unit, where they reported on their own that in Lithuania they had contact with a confirmed incident. It was arranged by their Sampling Unit for investigation and their result is positive.
  • 1 x flight: Returned from Athens 25/8 and is also a case contact announced yesterday that also had a travel history in Athens.

Please note that pending the completion of the 2nd repeat test of the 30 people announced as cases on Monday, those with a second negative test will be deducted from the total number of cases tomorrow.

In addition, the following laboratory tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:

  • From samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals, 127 laboratory diagnoses were carried out, and
  • From samples taken as part of the programme of referrals by Personal Physicians and control of special teams through the Public Health Clinics, 237 laboratory tests were completed.

Therefore, and on the basis of the data so far, the total number of cases amounts to 1,484.

In addition, six COVID-19 patients are treated in a ward at Famagusta General Hospital, one of whom is in the Increased Care Unit.
