2,112 LAMP BULB CHANGES ON THE MOTORWAYS

 Filenews 28 August 2020 - Petros Theoharidis

The Ministry of Transport plans to replace 2,112 light bulbs on the Nicosia – Limassol and Limassol – Paphos motorways with LED lamps, as well as smart meters that will transmit to the control center of electromechanical services both their electricity consumption and other operating parameters.

The relevant competition has already been launched, which specifically provides for the replacement of road lighting with LED-type lamps, Nicosia-Limassol motorways (from the GSP roundabout to the Agia Varvara roundabout) and Limassol-Paphos (from the Avdimos roundabout to the Paphos roundabout - motorway end), including ten years of maintenance.

The estimated cost of installing the 2,112 new lamps on the motorways is estimated to cost €990,000 of which €830,000 for their supply and installation and €160,000 for their ten-year maintenance.

Road lighting pillars on motorways will also be replaced, with 1,240 new single pillars and 426 pillars bearing two lamps. These are columns of 10 and 12 meters.

The new pillars to be installed for the new lighting, which will save significant amounts from electricity bills, will also include smart meters and 3G Modems for data teletransmission, which will be installed within the road lighting distribution boards.

Smart meters will transfer data through 3G Modem to the Electromechanical Services measurement recording software. It should be noted that the criteria for selecting the contractor for the project include the economy in the consumption of the lamps it will make available.

Most new fixtures, namely 296, will be installed in the area of the GSP node, another 268 in the kofinou junction area and 224 in the area of the Agia Varvara junction where the Larnaca – Nicosia and Limassol Nicosia motorways are joined. A total of 77 new lamps will be installed at the end of the motorway in Paphos and in the early stages of the roads of the roundabout there.

The project should be completed within 22 weeks of the award date, and the tendering procedure provides that maintenance should be carried out within 24 hours or in some cases within 48 hours.

According to the data cited by the Department of Electromechanical Services, road lighting on motorways is open almost 13 hours a day during the winter months (December 12.49, January 12:59 and February 12:20) while in the summer months they light up for 8 to 9 hours (8:25 in June, 8:17 in July and 8:54 in August). In total every year each street lighting lamp on motorways, it operates for 3,964 hours and 51 minutes.
