STILL CLOSED - THE OLD ROAD BY PETRA TOU ROMIOU

 Filenews 26 August 2020

Closed for a long time - the coastal road near Petra tou Romiou.

On the old Limassol-Paphos road, at Petra tou Romiou, there was subsidence of the road and the road has been completely closed to traffic resulting in problems and inconvenience, especially for those heading towards Paphos. The Department of Public Works has prepared a study to address the road failure but projects are delayed.

The reference point for almost all visitors to Cyprus, Petra tou Romiou, is not easily accessible for the last year and a half after access from Limassol to Paphos has been cut off for traffic due to subsidence of the road.

The community leader of Koukia, Michalis Nikolaou, said that for a small point, about ten meters long, they have completely closed the road and called on the Department of Public Works to give the road back to traffic by bypassing the problematic part of the road.

The community of Kouklia also complained that with the arrangements made those who head to Petra tou Romiou via Pissouri are forced to return to Limassol while the signage is also problematic.

The Public Works Department rejects the criticisms. A spokesperson for the Department argued that access to Petra tou Romiou was never closed and that the markings were satisfactory.

In essence, he stated that the priority of the department is the safety of passing drivers and the failure on the road will be addressed as a whole after a study and tenders will soon be made for the projects to be carried out in the area, which include the installation of piles to support soil volumes and tackle erosion. These procedures, he concluded, take some time.
