Filenews 21 August 2020
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs announces that an investigation is still under way into the circumstances of the death of the snorkeling fisherman that occurred on Sunday, August 16, 2020, on our shores. As there have been estimates that the unfortunate fisherman did not have a buoy, the State Department clarifies that this has not been confirmed.
It has also not been confirmed whether he initially brought a buoy which eluded him during swimming. More details are expected within the next few days. It should be noted that accidents involving snorkeling victims have occurred before even with fishermen who had the buoy with the appropriate flag.
The public is reminded that the use of buoy is a condition set by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research for the issue of an Amateur Fishing License with Fishing, and the recommendation is also available on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is noted that this fisherman held such a Licence.
According to the terms of the Department of Fisheries: "Underwater fishermen are required to carry one floating buoy (buoy) per group, plastic, yellow, orange or red, bearing tissue with a red flag with a white diagonal line and which is visible under normal conditions from a distance of at least three hundred (300) meters. If the licensed underwater fisherman is accompanied by a floating medium, this flag shall be clearly attached to that medium. Team members should move within a radius of 50 metres from the buoy or waterway'.
It is stressed that the above concerns all fishermen, individually or in groups, surface or submarine, with or without air bottles.
