Scientists are concerned about the discovery of a mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that appears to be 10 times more contagious!
According to Bloomberg, the coronavirus mutation, called D614G, has been detected in various regions of the world - and in Europe - and has now been recorded in Malaysia.
The new strain of coronavirus was diagnosed in three people from a series of 45 cases started by a restaurant owner who returned from India (to Malaysia) and broke the 14-day quarantine.
The man in question was arrested and sentenced to five months in prison. Bloomberg points out that the same strain of coronavirus was also detected in people who returned to Malaysia after a visit to the Philippines.
The chief executive of Malaysia's health sector, Nur Hisham Abdullah, said the discovery of the new strain could mean that ongoing investigations into vaccines may have gaps and prove ineffective against the virus.
Ten times more contagious the D614G mutation
According to Bloomberg, this mutation appears to be gradually prevalent in Europe and the US, with the World Health Organisation explaining that there is no evidence that it causes a more serious disease.
A study published in Cell Press said the most likely scenario is that the mutation does not have much impact on the effectiveness of vaccines already being developed.
In addition, the researchers note that antibodies to... known SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus will be effective against the D614G mutation. In the same document, however, according to Medium, it is stressed that this type of coronavirus can be up to 10 times more contagious.
"People need to be careful to take even stronger measures as this strain of coronavirus was detected in Malaysia. It is necessary for people to work together to break the chain of infections from each mutation," Nur Hisham Abdullah wrote on his Facebook.
It should be noted that Malaysia announced just 26 new cases on Saturday and 25 on Sunday.
