"This European strategy also ensures in Cyprus the quantities of vaccines that are appropriate to it, at the same delivery time that will be available in the major Member States of the Union," said Konstantinos Ioannou, explaining that "this development is very important for us since our firm position was to ensure through EU mechanisms that all countries have equal access to innovative treatments, in particular the vaccine against the virus. , regardless of their size'.

With regard to the new anti-pandemic measures decided yesterday by the Ministry of Health, the Minister of Health announced that by 15 January 2021:

- The maximum number of persons in private gatherings in houses and other public mass gathering places is set at 50 persons. (Private gatherings are defined as parties, funerals and memorials, etc.).

- Events/celebrations, festivals, exhibitions, concerts are prohibited.

- Conferences, general meetings or other similar meetings may be conducted, provided that the organisers apply the protocols in force.

Furthermore, the Ministry approved the Proposal of the Minister of Health for:

- Carrying out a population intervention with the laboratory testing of 5,000 people in places with a high confusion of persons (e.g. bars, restaurants, shopping centres, universities, etc.) which will be repeated every 2 weeks, with the aim of taking stock of the epidemiological picture in the Community.

- The first 5000 tests will target young people aged 18-40 outside dining areas, bars, etc.

- Sampling is also planned for workers in school units and pupils, health professionals and other staff of public hospitals as well as employees and tenants of nursing homes and other closed structures, in cooperation with the relevant Ministries and Services.

At the same time, it was decided to set up a special committee with the participation of members of the Scientific Advisory Committee to prepare recommendations for workplaces in addition to existing protocols and instructions for updating them, while it was also decided to implement an information campaign for continuous information to citizens.

Repeat the test in 7 days

The Government, as decided yesterday, will make a recommendation to citizens returning from abroad to repeat the test for coronavirus after their arrival even if they have undergone laboratory testing at the airport with a negative result. This is because, it has been observed that several individuals who during the first test present negatively to the virus, over a few days and when re-tested, are positively tested. It is understood that citizens who show symptoms should immediately contact their personal doctor and follow his instructions.
