The Benefits Of Activities
Bridging The Gap
What About Service Dogs?
Get Out There Today
Playing sports and staying active is natural to people. More than that, it’s basically a necessity. There are the obvious physical benefits to staying active such as getting fit, building muscles, and avoiding obesity. But there are mental benefits as well. Learning teamwork and how to rebound after a loss are vital life skills.
But many people with disabilities think that opportunity is closed to them. They think that, because they are differently abled, they cannot participate in sports and similar activities. Thankfully, that is simply not the case. Sure, being disabled means you may not be able to do exactly what other people do. But with some accommodations and a little help, you can stay active even if you have a disability.

The Benefits Of Activities
Some people look at activities like sports and just think they’re an amusing way to spend the time. That’s true, but staying active has many more benefits than just avoiding boredom.
In terms of physical health, people who are active tend to have better hearts, blood pressure, and muscles. They also have lower rates of obesity, better flexibility, and coordination, all of which can be helpful depending on your specific disability. But there are a lot of social and mental health benefits as well.
Participating in activities with others can help someone make more friends, build a sense of accomplishment, and improve depression. That’s especially true for people with disabilities, as they can sometimes feel excluded from society as a whole. Even the physical benefits of exercising and staying active can help with your mental health, as people tend to have more self-esteem when they are physically fit.
Bridging The Gap
How can someone with a disability participate in these activities? While it depends somewhat on the activities in question, there are a few accommodations to make.
Part of the problem is one of perception. People with disabilities can sometimes think their condition prevents them from enjoying activities. That’s because there are often too few adaptive programs designed for them. If you’re not aware of how to participate, it’s easy to think you cannot and it can be hard to bridge the gap between thought and action.
A great way to help with this is goal setting. This means setting challenging but realistic goals for yourself. For example, making a slam dunk might not be feasible given your disability, but is that really the most important thing about basketball? Take time to think about what really matters, such as making friends, getting exercise, and exposing more people to those with disabilities. Then make goals to reach those.
What About Service Dogs?
Some people with disabilities have service animals, with service dogs being the most common by far. Can people using these friends stay active? It might not always work, but the answer is normally yes.
First, sports facilities cannot ban service animals. As long as yours really is a service animal and not just a pet, you can bring your dog to basketball courts, field houses, and more. But if your service dog helps you get around and stay grounded, then there’s little reason why that cannot happen while staying active as well.
Get Out There Today
There are unique challenges to staying active faced by people with disabilities. That said, getting out there and enjoying the benefits of physical activity is not just possible — it can do some very good things for you.

SHOPS MUST CLOSE ON AUGUST 15
From Cyprus Mail 1/8/2017 - article by Staff Reporter
All general stores must remain closed on the religious holiday of August 15, the labour ministry said on Monday.
Specialty stores may remain open on this date, but under the law employees must be compensated with double pay per hour of work, the ministry said.
PARTIAL LUNAR ECLIPSE WILL BE VISIBLE FROM CYPRUS AUGUST 7
From Cyprus Mail 1/8/2017 - article by Annette Chrysostomou
The only partial lunar eclipse in 2017 will take place on August 7 and it will be visible from Cyprus.
The beginning of the eclipse will not be visible because the moon will be below the horizon but it will start to be visible at 8.25pm when the moon rises, will peak at 9.20pm and will be over by 10.20pm.
The House of Science, with the help of the Limassol municipality, is organising an event at the Limassol Molos promenade to mark the phenomenon.
During the event attendees will be able to observe the eclipse through telescopes and binoculars, watch it live on a big screen, get informed, take part in an astrophotography workshop emphasising the moon and listen to relaxing music.
The free event will kick off at 8pm on the pier opposite the Blue Café.
Amateur astronomers and photographers can bring their own equipment to observe and photograph the lunar eclipse which will be visible in much of Europe, Asia, Africa, the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the East of South America and Antarctica.
A partial lunar eclipse occurs when the earth moves between the sun and moon but the three celestial bodies do not form a perfectly straight line in space. For it to occur, there must be a full moon.
Only very little of the next full solar eclipse on January 18, 2018 will be visible from Cyprus. The next full eclipse which can be seen in much of Europe will be on July 27, 2018.
More information on the House of Science is available on Facebook https://goo.gl/nKUtLz. The Facebook page for the event is https://goo.gl/XoFS1c.
CTO MAKES 47 BEACHES ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
From Cyprus Mail 1/8/2017 from CNA News Service
The Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO), as part of its efforts to upgrade Cyprus’ beaches, announced on Tuesday that today 47 beaches were now accessible to people with special access needs, including 26 fully accessible and 21 partially accessible beaches.
FULLY ACCESSIBLE BEACHES
The following 26 beaches have full access to the beach, as the wheelchair user is able to get from the beach into the sea moving on a wooden or plastic ramp. There are also hygiene facilities and parking places for disabled persons.
On five of these beaches there is an innovative system (Seatrac) that enables disabled people to have full access to the sea. It is an automatic system powered by photovoltaic energy, consisting of a seat fixed on a rail that drives the disabled person into the sea at an approximate depth of 60cm.
Moreover, many beaches have Floating Wheelchairs that can be easily moved on the sand and float in the water thanks to their floating armrests and wheels. Seatracs and Floating Wheelchairs are available for use by the public free of charge and relevant information may be obtained by the lifeguards on the beaches.

CHECK THE SIM CARD IN YOUR INTRUDER ALARM ON A MONTHLY BASIS
Information provided by the Police - given the number of burglaries on the island generally, it is always useful to check that your intruder alarm is operating correctly. Advice has been given in the past regarding batteries, but this time the advice is regarding SIM cards. Police have also added that it is worth carrying out a monthly check on your SIM card to ensure it is functioning correctly and that renewal has not been overlooked.
If your alarm system sends out alarm activations or alerts via GSM SIM card, please take some time to ensure that your SIM card is working correctly. If it is not, then you will not receive a text message should your premises fall victim to burglars.
In the case of a SIM 'pay as you go', this must be topped up with €10 of credit every year. If it does not get topped up, the card will be disconnected - and the first you will know about it will be when you do not get an alert text message in the event of a breakin.
If you have an annual contract SIM card, as long as you, or your alarm company, pays the SIM card bill annually or monthly, the SIM card will never be disconnected and will always work.
There have been instances recently where it was thought that the alarm had not worked correctly. However, it was found that the problem lay with the SIM card. Despite being on an annual contract with an alarm company, some SIM cards had been deactivated - most likely because of non-payment of monthly accounts either by the homeowner or the alarm company - the system, therefore, was unable to send text messages to alert the homeowner and/or alarm company.
TO CHECK YOUR SIM CARD IS FUNCTIONING:
Set off the alarm. Let it ring for about 30 seconds to give the SIM card chance to send out the text messages to the numbers stored in the system. If you do not receive a message, then it is likely that the SIM has been deactivated.
It is recommended that a regular monthly test is carried out so that you ensure your system operates correctly in the event of a breakin or attempt thereat.
POLICE OUT TO CATCH PHONE & TRAFFIC LIGHT VIOLATORS
From inCyprus 1/8/2017
Police out to catch phone and traffic light violators
A traffic police official in Cyprus says officers will be out in force on the island’s roads this week during a major clampdown on mobile phone and traffic light violations.
Speaking to state radio on Tuesday morning, Traffic Police Chief Phillipos Papaelias called on motorists to exercise caution – especially during the peak of the summer holidays where many people are travelling to the beach or the mountains.
“This week’s clampdown – which got underway on Monday – will be specifically targeting motorists illegally using their phones whilst driving and those motorists violating traffic light regulations.”
“Traffic police will be out in numbers not only on motorways and main roads but also in the mountain areas. We once again call on motorists to abide by the rules of the road and to not speed, wear seatbelts, not to do dangerous overtaking and to be patient. We can all help to reduce the number of road deaths.”
It’s illegal to use your phone while driving or riding a motorcycle unless you have hands-free access, such as a bluetooth headset, voice command or a dashboard holder.
The law still applies to you if you’re stopped at traffic lights, queuing in traffic or supervising a learner driver.“The slightest distraction can be fatal,” continued Papaelia “Motorists have to be 100% focused on driving.”
Police officers will also be monitoring traffic lights this week following complaints of motorists running red lights – especially late at night or in the early hours of the morning.
“Again, violating a red light can be fatal. It is not clever to violate a red light and can have tragic consequence. Motorists are also advised to slow down at traffic lights even if the light is green.”
Papaelias also called on motorists involved in traffic accidents to make sure that they not only get out of the road but also stand behind railings if there are any to ensure that they remain safe.
“We had the recent incident in Kokkinotrimithia (where a woman in a traffic accident was killed after being struck by another vehicle after she got out of her car to inspect the damage) and we do not want a repeat of this tragedy.”
Looking Back: July

“Warm, mellow summer. The glowing sunbeams make every nerve tingle. The new needles of the pines and fir are nearly full grown and shine gloriously.” - John Muir
Running: I had a couple of pretty substantial weeks of running, bringing the total in July to 238 miles and about 40,800 feet of climbing. In addition, I am finally getting back on the bike, and logged about 65 miles this month. Last month, I also did about 20 miles. My goal was to ride to work once a week, which is about 5 miles. However, for the first half of the year, I basically did not ride at all. So now I have to maintain an average of about 10 miles per week or 40 miles a month, which I am on track to do if I keep it up!
I have also been doing yoga 1 - 2 times per week (this one). The yoga and the biking are definitely making my legs more heavy when I run, but I think that's mostly because this is the first month of doing all of it together. Hopefully my body will get accustomed to all the different activities and it will be stronger rather than more tired!
Reading: In July, I did a lot of driving and quite a few solo runs and bike rides. What this ended up translating to was more "reading" in the form of audiobooks! I read a total of 11 books, 5 of which were audiobooks (in italics). There were some pretty good ones. I have listed them below in order of preference (with books from my own shelf in bold). I have noticed one thing: my liking an audiobook can depend a lot on whether or not I like the narrator, which isn't really fair to the author. Also, I tend to not pay as much attention when I am listening to a book versus reading it myself, especially since usually I am driving or doing something else at the same time rather than focusing only on the book. However, it is a great way to get two times as many books read!

Travel: What a great month! I actually had a couple of weekends at home, which is very odd for a July, but I am not complaining! I got to finally do some things around the house, as well as prepping for my next trip, which is in August. However, I did spend some time in Oregon, as I always do in July, and I also went on a camping trip to Mammoth, which was a little different than expected due to the heavy amount of snow in the Sierras this year. Let's just say that running was superseded by slip-sliding, hiking and route finding and the camp site that we wanted was still located on a closed road. It was still a lot of fun and the high Sierras were beautiful covered in snow and ice.
Etc.: So far in the garden there are some ripe tomatoes and a few cucumbers, but I think that a rat is eating my zucchini as I keep finding chewed nubs. Darn it, varmit. So I am just starting to be able to have tomato salads and to have a once in a while cucumber snack. I also had some potatoes that were sprouting eyes, so I planted them last week for a "fall planting." We shall see if they take! And the corn is growing! No ears yet, but it's getting taller!

Aşağıda örneğini vermiş olduğumuz besinler hem sizin kabızlık şikayetinizi ortadan kaldırabilir, hem de yeniden kabızlık problemi yaşamanızı engeller. İşte o besinler;
