Green Island, a Different Style Great Barrier Reef Island

Green Island, a beautiful coral Cay on Australia's Great Barrier Reef, is easily identified from the air by it's emerald rainforest, white sandy beaches and coral reefs. It is one of 300 sand cays on the reef, but the only one with a rainforest. A true coral cay, it is said to be 6000 years old, has about 37 acres and takes about 45 minutes to walk around.

Home to over 120 species of colorful birds, native plants, marine life and the coral gardens, it is worth spending a few days to explore. While full and half day tours can be taken from Cairns, staying on Green Island offers a chance to see so much more, it is one of the most eco-sensitive developments on the reef.

There are only 46 luxurious suites, which are situated in the rainforest, secluded from the day visitors, and having two types of accommodations - Reef Suites set in clusters under the rain canopy but near central facilities; and Island suites with inter-connecting or adjoining rooms, also in the same location. There are also disabled room facilities close to the restaurants and reception area.

Once on the island, guests will discover many, included activities, glass-bottom boat tours, snorkeling, guided night walking tours, entry to the oldest underwater observatory, windsurfers, and canoes to explore on ones own. Because this is an island that caters to day visitors who make up most of their visitor list, there are many activities offered and overnight guests benefit from being able to use all the activities available, including parasailing, seawalking helmit diving, visit to the crocodile habitat and diving trips with instructions for the novice, just to mention a few.

While not have a large varity of dining options, both day visitors and island guests will enjoy the casual and outdoor grill which serves burgers and other Grill specialities, along with a daily barbecue lunch. In the Emerald restaurant, which always has local produce on their menu, and guests can enjoy the tropical cuisine either on the outdoor terrace or in the air-conditioned dining room, andfor those guests staying overnight, a sumptous seafood dinner on the beach while watch the sun go down is the end to a perfect day.

As one of the world's most eco-sensitive tourism developments, all resort infrstructures and building were done with minimal vegetation clearance and in many instances the structures were built around the trees. No buildings extend above the tree canopy and the majority of the buildings have no gutters, allowing the rainfall to replinish the moisture needed to support the vegetation. The island is wheelchair accessibile throughout the reception area, restaurants, pools, nature walks, beaches and in the accommodations for those staying overnight.

Moodboard: Family Room

Here it is: my family room moodboard.  The floors will be dark hardwoods and the walls a white with a tint of gray.  The fabrics are Trina Turk for Schumacher and the gray velvet is Pindler & Pindler.  I had the sofa with chaise made for my last home-it will be staying, along with my original coffee table.  I plan on using my own black and white photography in the space.  It is fun to see it conceptualized, but I will be thrilled when it's actually installed in our home and becomes a reality.  I am sure the room will change and evolve before that time!

Great News (and No Net)

I have great news! I was featured over at For The Love of Blogs!! This is like the granddaddy of all good blogs! If you are looking for a new blog to read, new things to learn, fashion, food and fun, this is a great site. AND all the folks who are part of the community over there are really great as well. Thanks girls!

As a side note, as gung ho as I was about the A-Z Blogfest, I have some sad news to report. There is not very much wifi in New Zealand. I KNOW! I thought it would be no problem getting online, but alas, I was mistaken! Sometimes you can find internet cafes, but the going rate seems to be about 8 dollars an hour. And as much as I love blogging, I am just not sure it is worth that much. So. Darn it! I had such great plans! However, I will probably keep up the letter theme just for fun. As you can see, today is G for Great!

Right now, not only are we deprived of the internet, but we are driving around the North Island of New Zealand in a camper-van. What an adventure! The camping facitilies range from a dark "parking lot" to nice ones, like the one we are in now, which has hot showers (NOT common), laundry (yay for not being smelly for a little while) and wifi (for 8 dollars an hour! This will not be a long post *wink wink*)

We spent the last week touring Northland, which is the area north of Auckland. We did a lot of hiking -- we have been *trying* to hike a little each day so we will be "in shape" when we get home (just in time for summer and bathing suit season).

I am going crazy thinking while hiking: adding things to my mile long To Do List, thinking about how and when I will get a job, thinking of the people to visit and the things to see while I am home. It will be really nice to unpack and at least be in one place for a couple of weeks. Then I will have to go back to work!

I will leave you with some photos of the New Zealand scenery.

As seen from the back window of the camper-van.

Fun fact about New Zealand: There are about 4 million people and 40 million sheep. This = 10 sheep per person!

Ten on Tuesday (13)

Okay so I really don't have time for this week's ToT, but Lisa from LisasYarns, who I totally think is cool, posted these Q's to Chelsea at Roots and Rings, so I am going to do it, for Lisa's sake. Dude, she runs, she travels, she travels to run, she is a finance whiz. She's cool. I relate to her. So...now to the Qs.

1. If you work, do you drive to work or take public transportation?
I don't work! But once I get a job, I will probably drive, although I would rather walk, ride my bike, or take pub tran. In SF, I took the Muni (public tran) or walked. I loved it. I think it is the way to go. All these singles in cars really drive me crazy!

2. How often do you get your haircut? Do you go to the same person every time?
Wow. That is an interesting question. I used to ALWAYS go to Karen at Hairplay in San Francisco. She is awesome. Plus she has hair similar (thin) to mine. So she knows. BUT I have not "lived" in the city for about (it PAINS me to say it)...7 years -- Since 2004. So, basically here is my hair routine. No haircut. Then I lived in Florida in 2005. A gay guy cut my hair there. I loved it. Then I went for about 3 years without a cut. In 2008 my friend Chris cut it (you can read THAT story HERE) so I could send it to Locks of Love. Then I didn't cut it again. Until about 2 months ago. Remember I asked you guys if you thought I should cut it? And then I did? So there is a really long answer to a short Q.

3. Do you read the newspaper? If so, a hardcopy or the online version?
I usually just watch the CNN summary. I also listen to NPR. I don't really read the newspaper.

4. What is the best book you have read this year?
Wow, this year hasn't been too long yet. I just read the Girl Who Played With Fire. That was good. Otherwise, I am having a hard time "loving" books this year. I seem to find fault with each one. Around Africa on My Bicycle was good.

5. What is the best movie you have seen this year?
I haven't really seen any.

6. Do you tend to crave sweet or salty foods?
Salty.

7. Do you eat breakfast every day? If so, what do you have?
Most days, yes. Cereal or fruit. Definitely coffee. Every day, coffee.

8. If you celebrate Easter, what Easter treat/candy are you most looking forward to?
I do celebrate, but I am missing the family fun this year. I miss the homemade ice cream.

9. How late is “sleeping in” to you?
8 o'clock

10. Where are you going on your next vacation?
Well, that is a great question. I think maybe Sweden, or Czech Republic. Or maybe Romania. Or Morocco. Who knows.

Thanks Chelsea and Lisa! What a fun list!

Monday Escapes

In honor of the warm Spring weather and the fact that I couldn't feel like I live farther away from the sea, I am bringing you to an exotic beach vacation spot...

This archipelago is where one thinks of staying in an over the water bungalow, where you can dip into the crystal waters right from your own personal villa.  The smell of the hibiscus flower as the hotel concierge greets you with a floral lei, the deep shades of green from the cascading mountains, and the never ending view to the depths of the sea ground, will leave you on pleasure sensory overload.  This island may not conjure up the same mystique as it's more coveted neighbor but it is surely not to be missed if you ever find yourself in this region:
