Kabalevsky and Khachaturian Cello Concertos by Mats Lidstrom

Review from amazon:
When I went through my 'listen to as many Cello Concertos as possible' phase, from the normal fare of excellent ones from Haydn, Schumann, Dvorak, Elgar, Shostakovich etc. the Kabalevsky, on this CD, is the one of the ones that stood out for me. This was a composer I barely knew of; I knew some of his solo piano works, and little else.

To be honest I wouldn't have thought that much of the work if I hadn't heard this version, there is a rhythmic, singing quality to the playing that just doesn't appear on the other versions I have listened to: the Wallfisch and Rudin. The Khachaturian is also very good, but not great and just doesn't have the impact of the Kabalevsky.

This is one of my most listened to works of any type. And though I wish Rostropovich had recorded it, Lidstrom well deseves the 5 stars for this superb Kabalevsky
