El-Nino-Güneyli Salınım: Küresel Bir Okyanus/Atmosfer Olayı
El Niño terimi, yüzyıllardan beri yerli halk tarafından, ekvatoral batı Pasifik Okyanusu’ndan doğuya akan sıcak yüzey sularının kıyısal Humbolt Akıntısı’nın besince zengin soğuk sularının yerine geçmesi sonucunda, her 2-5 yılda bir Güney Amerika’nın batı kıyılarında okyanus akıntılarının yönünde ve yüzey sularının sıcaklığında gözlenen ani değişikliği açıklamak için kullanılmaktadır. 1990’lı yıllarda oluşanlar bir yana, El Niño’nun etkileri genel olarak 1-2 yıl sürmektedir. Bu dönemlerde, tropikal doğu Pasifik Okyanusu’nda ve Peru kıyısı boyunca, alize rüzgarları zayıflar ve deniz yüzeyi sıcaklığı yaklaşık 4-5 C° kadar yükselir. Bu sıcak sular besin açısından fakir ve yerli türler için olağandışı olduğu için, El Niño olayları Güney Amerika’nın Pasifik kıyısındaki balıkçılık etkinliklerinde, özellikle hamsi üretiminde ve öteki deniz canlılarının nüfusunda çok büyük azalmalara neden olmaktadır.
