Ways to Find Your Motivation to Exercise and Keep It!

We've all started an exercise program, gotten all excited about it, but then gave up on it a week or two later. While we start out super motivated, that excitement fades quickly. The key to sticking to an exercise program is finding a way to keep that original motivation. Here are a few tips for getting for getting and staying motivated.

• Find a role model. Many women get motivated to diet and work out by taping up pictures of models or actresses. This is actually a great way to remind yourself what your goals are and keep a visual of them fresh in your mind. Just be sure to pick an appropriate role model and not someone with unhealthy eating and exercise habits or an unachievable image.

• Set small goals. If you start out setting tough goals, you probably won't achieve them and will then become discouraged. The key is to set smaller, easy to achieve goals and work your way up. Start with "I will work out three days this week". Once you get yourself into a routine, get yourself to work out harder and do more during each session.

• Reward yourself. Setting goals is good way to get yourself into a workout program. If you have trouble keeping yourself going, try rewarding yourself when you reach a goal. Don't go with big rewards, just small rewards for reaching small goals. For example, I can go to that movie if I work out three times this week. If you're working out to lose weight, just don't reward yourself with food.

• Get a buddy. Having someone to workout with can help keep your mind off the work and keep you entertained. That means you're more likely to want to go work out. Having a buddy also makes it harder for you to skip your workout because you'll be letting someone else down and they'll be there to talk you into going even if you don't feel like it. If you can't find a buddy to go with you, you can always hire a personal trainer to keep you going.

• Make it fun. Exercise doesn't have to be boring a repetitive. If you don't like your exercise routine, change it. Keep looking until you find something you enjoy doing. This way, you'll end up looking forward to exercise instead of dreading it.

• Mix it up. Even the most exciting workout can get boring if you do it over and over every day. Find several exercises you like to do and alternate. Try swimming Mondays, bicycling on Wednesdays, and a Pilates tape on Saturday. Any time you find yourself getting bored with a workout, replace it in your rotation for a while and start it again in a few months.

Don't take it too seriously. If you start acting like exercise is hard work, it will become hard work. Make your exercise a light, fun, activity rather than a chore you have to do. This will keep you from getting a bad attitude and make you less likely to give up.

Fido Is Good for Your Health

You probably know that having a pet is good for your health and can help you live a longer, happier life. A recent study actually showed that having a dog is better for your health than owning a cat. Pets of all kinds, especially dogs, will make a great addition to almost any family.

We know that getting plenty of exercise is essential to leading a healthy lifestyle, but some of us don't get up and move as much as we should. While most people have every intention of following an exercise plan, they end up skipping workouts because they're busy, bored by them, or just not in the mood. This is where having a dog is just great. What better motivator to get up and move and get outside do you have than a dog that jumps on your lap or gives you the sad face because they want to go for a walk? If you have the responsibility of a dog, you're going to have the motivation to move more often (especially if you don't have a fenced yard).

Did you know that touch can help make us feel more comfortable and relaxed? But it also doesn't have to be human touch. Studies have shown that the simple act of petting your animal can help reduce tension and cause an immediate drop in blood pressure. What a great benefit to have when so many common disorders today are helped or even preventable by reducing stress. Imagine being able to have lower blood pressure and less risk of heart disease simply by having your dog there. Of course, you should also consider that in some cases dogs can also raise your stress levels; a great reason to start rigorous dog training early and choosing the right kind of dog for you and your family.

Just like dogs, humans are social creatures. We feel better when there's someone else with us and can easily get lonely and upset when we are alone for extended periods of time. Having a pet at home can give us the feelings of love and attention. Plus, pets aren't like people, they don't care if we didn't do our chores, they show unconditional love that can improve our mood and make us feel more accepted. Dogs are so good at making people feel loved; they are often used to treat people with depression. It's hard to feel down when there's a constant smiling face by your side. The companionship of a dog is so beneficial that older people who live alone and have pets live longer than those who live alone and don't have pets.

So if you are thinking of getting a dog, but you are on the fence, remember that dogs can help you get fit, and make you feel less stressed or lonely. Studies have shown that people who own dogs get sick less often, recover much faster, and even live longer. A dog is a great loyal friend to have and keep around.

How To: Eat A Burrito

Mr. Lovely is from Back East. When he first came to California, he was a burrito virgin. Okay, sure, he may have had one of those things that are kind of wet and slimy and covered with red sauce and come with a side of rice and beans. Those are good, but in California, that is not the kind of burrito we are referring to when we talk about a burrito. There is a certain kind of burrito; it is bigger than your head.

And there is a certain way to eat this burrito. Don't be like Mr. Lovely and pull all the (2 layers!) of foil off, exposing the naked tortilla! Don't get pollo asada all over your hands!! Keep the re-fried beans from going all over your lap! Don't embarrass yourself!

I am here to keep that from happening to you. Hopefully we caught it in time.

How to eat a San Francisco Burrito like a local: 

(1) Start with the key players laid out. The burrito. The salt. The chips. The salsa. Napkins.


(2) Now, this is important. There are two layers of foil. Remove the outer layer only. Now, tear only the top portion of the inner foil layer off, leaving about half of the foil at the bottom to hold onto as you eat.


(3) As you eat the burrito, tear the foil down little by little, always leaving yourself a hand hold. Not only does this keep your hand from touching the burrito, but it keeps the juices from landing on your lap.


(4) More of the same. I also like to add salt and salsa little by little to each bite and scoop up that and any excess innards with chips as I move down the burrito.


(6) Even when you get to almost the very bottom, you still have clean hands!


(7) At the very bottom, once you have only a few bites left, remove the remaining foil. Quickly take the few bites, so as to not make a mess. OR eat all three bites as one bite, covering your mouth with aforementioned napkins. Or not. Nobody will judge.


And there you have it. Now you are ready for an experience of a lifetime! Now the only question is, what kind of burrito will you try first?

Building A Gym At Home

Let's assume that you are at the point of decision: you are going to build your own exercise domain, and as previously blogged, you have already decided to include your children in this enterprise and take advantage of this opportunity to be with your kids while they grow up. And, of course, you can always enter your home gym by yourself and work out to your heart's content because you have the keys to both doors!

Place the equipment in your Home Gym Room so there is plenty of room around the "kids corner" for the other play and resting that children do. ( Remember that you have already laid a piece of second-hand carpet, bound or unbound, on your garage floor). I like the idea of throwing down two or three large pillows on the floor for wiggle time for the kids. Because the above equipment has all the necessities already on it, you do not have to buy each piece separately. Since you now have a basis for strength training you can consider a stationary bike for aerobic training.

For aerobic/cardio training be aware that your heart gets used to the same exercises day after day and it becomes more difficult to burn calories and you must work harder and longer to achieve the same results. So, for exercising your heart, you should have at least two different ways of exercising. These can be done without machines as high impact, high intensity routines with no rest for a period of time. One of these choices could be a good jump rope. These exercises, used alternately, will guarantee that you are increasing your natural abilities and will be ready for a challenge to your body and will comprise the balance of your Home Gym.

If you wish to further embellish this hallowed place, find a couple of posters that the kids will like, maybe let them pick out what they want. For the sake of your own boredom, or desire to have something to think about while you exercise, why not write out a copy in large black letters of the exercises you plan to carry out and hang them where you can see them and adhere to them each day. Also, there are posters galore that will motivate you to "stay focused," books to read while on the stationery bicycle, maybe some nutritional reminders for the whole family. Put up a "before" picture if you are in it for weight loss and follow-up at goal time with an "after" picture. This is part of the fun of exercising, because you know you and your family will be happier and healthier and look 100% better!
