Coronavirus cases are expected to remain in the triple digits during the winter, an expert said Tuesday, warning that Cyprus was now at a tipping point.
Petros Karayiannis, Professor of Microbiology/Molecular Virology at the University of Nicosia Medical School, said the situation in Cyprus is still under control, although it is now at a critical point of the pandemic and winter was coming.
“The fact that we keep registering three-digits number of cases and close to 200 per day means that the virus is still active in the community and the chance of spreading it still high,” he said.
Karayiannis also said that the 35 positive cases found at Limassol nursing home on Monday are likely to result in more deaths, after a 91-year-old man passed away on Monday, although his death was not directly attributed to coronavirus.
His death followed that of a 91-year-old woman who died from coronavirus last Saturday who was also a resident at the nursing home.
The woman’s family have filed an official complaint with the police, suggesting there had been neglect on behalf of the management.
“Unfortunately, we have seen the virus enter nursing homes, which is not ideal. Back in spring, many elderly living in nursing homes throughout Europe, people who are very vulnerable, were infected.”
Karayiannis suggested that visits to nursing homes should be kept to a minimum and strict measures applied by staff.
“Frequent visits to relatives in nursing homes increase the risk of further infections. I expect that the new measures that will be announced on Wednesday will limit visits.”
“We can return to a situation where things are under control, but we need to act now. Unfortunately, there are still many who behave as if nothing is happening.”
