WHO - REMDESIVIR DOES NOT REDUCE MORTALITY FROM COVID-19

 Filenews 16 October 2020

Treatment with remdesivir has no substantial effect on a patient's chance of survival with Covid-19 or during hospitalization, according to the results of the World Health Organization's (WHO) large Solidarity clinical study, which have caused frustration, as several hopes have been raised for this drug.

The study evaluated remdesivir and three other drugs in 11,266 patients in more than 500 hospitals in 30 countries, finding that no treatment "substantially affects mortality" or intubulations, according to the Fainansian Times and Reuters agency.

"Treatments with remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir and interferon appeared to have little effect on inpatient mortality," according to the study.

The Solidarity clinical trial is ongoing, as medicines are constantly being added or removed. The remdesivir-specific arm included 2,750 patients who were given the drug for ten days (200 milligrams on the first day and 100 milligrams the following).

The WHO's findings mean that currently the only drug proven to increase the chance of survival from Covid-19 is dexamethasone, a cheap steroid taken orally and widely available internationally. The WHO has recommended the use of steroids in serious Cases Covid-19. The Agency's hopes now turn to monoclonal antibodies, immunomodulizers and other anti-ic drugs.
