A board focusing on the invasion at the Ayios Demetrios Primary School PaphosThe education ministry on Friday announced it was reinstating ‘Den Xehno’ (I don’t forget) activities in schools and would be informing all pupils of the latest provocations by Turkey in the fenced-off area of Varosha in Famagusta.
The ministry said it would be ‘reintroducing Famagusta’ to the children.
Therefore, it said, all primary education administrations have been asked to activate the local ‘Den Xehno’ committees in each school and organise on Monday special classroom events focused on Famagusta.
In high schools, also on Monday, pupils will be briefed on the latest developments “and the historical identity and development of the city of Famagusta.”
Den Xehno is a programme by the education ministry aimed at introducing pupils to the Cyprus problem and occupied areas.
The announcement follows the opening on Thursday by the Turkish side of part of the fenced area of Varosha, allowing the general public to visit for the first time since 1974.
The government has condemned the move and has filed an appeal with the UN Security Council citing violation of resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992).
