ON-LINE EMAIL SCAMS ON THE RISE

 Filenews 9 October 2020

In recent times, the Police have been receiving complaints from citizens about online e-mail fraud and it appears that this type of fraud is on the rise.

The Police are looking into a new case of online fraud, reported by a 49-year-old resident of Paphos, where according to him he had agreed with a specific company to undertake gardening work, in his home. According to his claim, he received a message in his e-mail and sent a sum of 17,850 euros to a foreign bank.

Usually, complaints made to the Police relate to deft people, who send misleading messages with the ultimate aim of deceiving unsuspecting users into making a bank transfer to various bank accounts abroad. After locating personal information with e-mail addresses, the perpetrators send these messages and call their victim as they proceed to bank transfer.

To achieve fraud, the deft use misleading online services so that the recipients of the messages see the message as authentic.

The public is once again called as being particularly attentive to such messages it receives.

Confirm any order for payment, especially when referring to different bank accounts than usual.

The public can also contact the Office for Combating Cybercrime by telephone at tel. 22808200 or through the website.
