The condition of the eight patients, who were operated for cataract and presented serious complications due to infection by a drug-resistant strain of bacteria is serious but manageable, Andreas Neophytou, Director of Makarios Hospital told CNA.
As he said there has been a mild improvement of the infection but noted that there is always the danger of them losing sight to the eye that has been operated.
He added that the infection is controlled by antibiotics and the ophthalmologists will today re-examine their condition.
It is reminded that eight individuals were first operated at a private clinic in Nicosia but were infected with the drug-resistant strain of bacteria and were then transferred to a private hospital in Limassol. Due to the seriousness of their condition, they were then taken to Makarios Hospital. Now four of them are being treated at Makarios Hospital and four at the Nicosia General Hospital.
