The Charles S. Philips Photographic Collection

Greenbank Mill and the Philips House
There are many resources available to historical researchers in their attempts to reconstruct and make sense of the past. Public documents like censuses, birth, death, and marriage certificates, and government reports can give you an idea of what was going on where. Personal documents like letters and diaries can give insights into the why's of past lives. But for my money (such as it is) there's nothing quite like old photographs. Somehow, actually looking at an image (no matter how blurry) of a person or a place can make them seem real in a way that words on paper never can.

From what I've seen, at least, most of the historic photographs we have from the late 19th/early 20th Century era tend to come to us from professional photographers. Some are portraits taken in a formal studio, while many others were likely taken "in the field" by itinerant photographers. These were men (mostly) who traveled around with their camera and equipment and took pictures of those in rural areas who didn't have easy access to a studio in the nearest city. Some of these same itinerants took many of the photos for the postcards of the day, too.

All that being said, once in a while we're lucky enough to have some photos from a different kind of source -- an amateur photographer. Cameras were certainly not as common then as they are now, but they were not impossible to get or use, either. (In my own family, I have a great-great grandfather who had a camera in that era, and took some really cool shots. One was a triple exposure with three of him sitting around a table playing cards.) However, the process of taking and developing photographs at that time was still fairly involved. The people who did it really liked photography, and were probably very methodical people. They took pictures of things that interested them. We're fortunate enough that one such person like this hailed from Mill Creek Hundred, and came back to the area to take some wonderful photographs. Many of these photographs will be on public display later this month (August 2016).

Fell Spice Mill

Charles Sumner Philips was born on November 27, 1871 in Greenbank, Delaware, the eighth child of Isaac D. and Caroline Philips. At the time of Charles' birth, his father and his Uncle William were the operators of the Greenbank Mill, which they had adapted to do woodworking. Charles grew up on the grounds in the Philips House, which had been built nearly a century earlier by his grandfather's uncle. The family moved into Wilmington after selling the Greenbank property in 1888, and that's where Charles would find work.

Harlan-Chandler Mill in Milltown

Charles Philips found a job as a draftsman with the Pusey and Jones Company, makers of steel-hulled ships, railroad cars and other complex machinery. He would later hold the same position with Dupont. Perhaps it was growing up around the mill, but Charles developed an engineer's eye for machinery that certainly helped in his professional life. In the early to mid 1890's, he also developed (no pun intended) an eye for something else -- photography. Philips was a single (he didn't marry until later in life), comfortably middle class man with no television or internet to distract him, so he had the time and means to do something very constructive -- document on film many of the places and things that meant something to him

Many of those photographs Philips took are now in the care of the Chester County Historical Society (CCHS). Their collection contains over 450 glass plate negatives taken between 1895 and 1912. The locations reflect the places Charles Philips lived, including Wilmington, northern New Castle County, and southern Chester County. There is also a group taken in the Newport News/Jamestown, Virginia area, where Philips lived for a time around the turn of the century. The subjects reflect what he found interesting -- things like houses, mills, bridges, and meeting houses (the Philips family were Quakers).

Faulkland Road looking east. Faulkland Station is visible

Fairly early on, mostly between 1895 and 1897, Philips took a series of photographs in the MCH area. Many of them were along the Wilmington & Western Railroad line, then the Landenburg Branch of the B&O. The existence of these photos recently came to the attention of members of Historic Red Clay Valley (HRCV), the parent organization of the Wilmington & Western Railroad. HRCV obtained a grant to have professional, high quality digital scans made of approximately 60 of Philips' glass plates.

Marshall Paper Mill at Wooddale, station on left

On Friday, August 26, 2016, HRCV will host an exhibition gala celebrating the Philips Collection, at its Marshallton headquarters. More information can be found here. I've run across items from the collection over the years, but I never knew the story behind them. Some of the photos I've posted in the past are displayed on this page, along with some of the newly-printed railroad related ones. Looking at a comprehensive list of the CCHS's collection, there are still several dozen (at least) photo's that I don't think I've ever seen that would be fascinating to look at. Perhaps someday prints can be made of those, but in the meantime HRCV's new exhibit is a priceless look into the Red Clay Valley of the late 1800's.

ZACK THE LITTLE BLACK DOG WITH THE 'LAMPSHADE' WHO LED EVERYONE A MERRY DANCE FOR MONTHS - UPDATE

Many of you will remember the little black dog who escaped from foster care after being neutered earlier this year. He was wearing a 'lampshade' and was spotted all around the Paphos area - from Tremithousa, to Kissonerga, and Anavargos to Tala.   After many sightings and many attempts to grab him, the trail went cold a few months ago and everyone thought that nothing would be heard again.

Happily Zack was finally picked up a few weeks ago.  He has been peppered with shot and part of the 'lampshade' was embedded in his neck, necessitating an operation.  His story can be found on the site below.

An appeal has gone out to raise the funds for his operation - €450 in total - and if you are interested in assisting, please follow this link:  https://www.youcaring.com/zacks-medical-bill-with-animal-health-clinic-and-cy-vets-624048k

[NEWS] 15.08.16 BTS’ten Jungkook’a Boşuna ‘Altın Maknae’ Denmiyor

“Sadece insanlara bunca müzik seven sanatçı arasında benim gibi biri olduğunu da göstermek istedim.”

Müziğe olan samimi tutkusunu duyduğumda biraz duygulandım doğrusu. BTS grubunun (Rap Monster, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, Jungkook) maknaesi Jungkook, MBC’nin programı ‘King of Masked Singer’a bu tutkusu nedeniyle katıldığını 14 Ağustos’taki yayında söylemişti.

Bunun arkasında birtakım nedenler var. BTS Haziran 2013’te ‘2 COOL 4 SKOOL’ adlı albümle çıkış yaptı ve ‘No More Dream’, ‘N.O’, ‘Boy in Luv’, ‘Danger’ ve ‘War of Hormone’ ile promosyonlara başladı. Çoğu albümlerin yapımı grubun rapçileri: Rap Monster, Suga ve J-Hope’a ait. Ayrıca rapçileri çaylakken çok fazla konuşulmuştu.

‘King of Masked Singer’ BTS’e karşı olan bütün kalıp düşünceleri ve önyargıları yıktı. Maskeli Jungkook, ilk turda ‘I’m in Love’ şarkısını seslendirdikten sonra ikinci tura geçti.

Geçen Nisan’dan beri BTS, ‘The Most Beautiful Moment in Life’ üçlemesindeki ‘I NEED U’, ‘RUN’, ‘DOPE’, ‘Butterfly’ ve ‘FIRE’ gibi hit şarkılar tanıtmakta ve ün kazanmakta.

How I Eat to Stay Fit and Healthy

I Eat For Goals
I recently posted this motivation on my Instagram and Facebook:

" I do take the time to read your comments left on my motivational posts and excited you're striving to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Showing images of those dedicated to fitness including myself are to encourage and inspire.

I receive both positive and negative feedback all part of being an online personality. I'm going to get very personal with you and you can read more about me on my Blog if you choose.

I'm over 50, a fitness professional and freelance writer who works extremely long hours. My day doesn't end when I step out of my studio. I look the way I do because of the lifestyle I walk daily.

I don't spend hours in the gym. I limit my workouts to one-hour sessions 4 to 5 days per week. I indulge on treats on occasion and eat incredible tasting healthy food.

I am a woman of God and my faith helps me with inner strength and getting through each day. I am passionate about helping people get healthy and would love to hug everyone making this choice. I believe life is a gift and I am not here to be anyone else or look like anyone else. I am also not here to shame others for not looking like a fitness model.

My goal is always to be my best me each day and in that I may fail but pick up and keep trying. My image is to show that it's never too late, no circumstance too hard, and even injury so severe to not be able to do something. Articles and images are for inspiration and motivation as you work on becoming your best you.

Getting angry and discouraged because you're not personally making the choices to change your body does nothing but fuel resentment. It may even cause you to walk away from trying. I pray your thoughts and feelings would be changed for the positive. Also that your focus to become healthier would start today.

Fitness is a journey and we're all works in progress striving for our best and never perfection. Embrace the now, love who you are now and start working right where you are. Today is what we have and narrowing that down more, this moment is the concern. What you're thinking and doing right now...is it creating a better, healthier you?"

The responses to this post were incredible, touching, and inspiring. I am a woman of my word and answering the call to several requests of what I eat on a weekly basis and my workout routine. I will begin with nutrition because I have found this to be the biggest struggle for people throughout my years of teaching health and fitness.

I like to teach nutrition simply and focus on health. There's nothing secret or costly about eating for fitness goals. Sadly, too much complication has been placed on this topic. Food fears and guilt have been created through unrealistic marketing.

Let's all just take a deep breath and relax about eating healthy. Releasing the stress surrounding food is the first order of business. Healthy food is not the enemy and isn't the cause of our weight gain. Eating the right food is what will enable our body to be fit, healthy and strong.

I feel blessed to have the ability to motivate and inspire you. We are all works in progress. Forget about perfection and just apply the best principles of healthy nutrition and fitness each day. This also includes eating off track on occasion. If any fitness professional tells you indulgence never occurs that is a bold face lie. I will personally answer to that statement.

I have been in the fitness industry over 30 years and have had my share of burgers, fries, pizza and brownies. I live a life of moderation and use a 90/10 percent eating strategy and sometimes 80/20 depending on the situation. Eating healthy is also about balance and allowing for the occasional treat meal.

Let's move on to what I eat during a typical work week. I'm a walk the talk trainer and adhere to what I teach my clients. Results come when consistent healthy food intake and exercise are happening.

I eat a wide variety of healthy food from good carbohydrates, lean proteins, healthy fats and lots of water. I can be a creature of habit and find myself eating the same meals every day, except for dinner which is typically changed each night.

I cook at home to be in control of what I eat. I eat simply, never count calories, and really try not to let myself feel hungry. I space my meals every 2 to 3 hours and that works for me. I use my palm as a guide for portion size and keep measuring cups handy for wet ingredients.

My typical daily nutritional intake looks like this:

Meal 1: Ozery Bakery Morning round with Coffee

Meal 1: Option 2, Powered Up Oats with Coffee

1/2 cup steel cut oats
1/4 sliced banana
handful blueberries
handful walnuts

Meal 2: Open face peppered turkey and hummus

I enjoy this with a green smoothie
1 cup fresh pineapple chunks
large handful of power greens
(chard, kale, spinach), blend in water

Alpine Valley Organic Bread toasted
smear with organic hummus
top with peppered turkey

Meal 3: Sliced fruit with flax meal and yogurt

1 large nectarine or fruit of choice
I also like to use 1/2 cup blueberries
1/4 cup ground flax meal
1/2 cup Fage plain Greek yogurt
I like to top with a handful of raw unsalted mixed nuts
Stir and eat

Meal 3: Option 2, boiled eggs with sweet potatoes

1 full organic egg, 1 egg white mixed with mustard, sprinkle with paprika if desired
1/2 large sweet potato, cooked and cut in wedges

I like to dip my sweet potato in organic ketchup ... call me weird, but I have always been a ketchup kinda girl

Meal 4: Grilled salmon and roasted veggies

Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and red bell peppers drizzled with olive oil and tossed with basil pesto and minced garlic. Roast in open pan at 450 for 30 to 35 minutes

season and grill salmon outdoors for 25 minutes

Other Meal 4 Options I enjoy:
Roasted Veggies and Egg

Healthy Grilled Pizza

Brussels and Baked Stuffed Pork

I enjoy a small snack before bed and this really varies with my mood. I enjoy hummus or peanut butter on wheat toast or if I have baked a healthy treat, I will have that.

Check out my recipe page for more meal ideas. Also, head on over to Verywell and read my sports nutrition articles.

I hope this information is helpful and provides a great foundation for reaching fitness goals with healthy nutrition.

STUNNING ART INSTALLED ALONG PAPHOS COAST

Cyprus Mail 12/8/16 - article by Bejay Browne

STUNNING art installations in Kato Paphos are drawing tourists and locals and are part of an open air museum being created by the organisers of the town’s upcoming European Capital of culture title.
The three installations are part of a larger project, which will see twelve works of art by five artists from Cyprus placed at different spaces across Paphos to create an ‘open air art museum.’
The project is titled, “Signs in time and space,” and participating artists were chosen from an open call in 2014.

 Sol Alter by Yiota Ioannidou

The first artwork, “Views of Infinity”, is a geometric marble installation by Harry Paspallis, the second, a female form: “Sol Alter” by Yiota Ioannidou, and the third, the ‘Red Poppy’ by Andreas Paraskevas.
The creations emerge between the lighthouse and the sea, along the western coastline of Kato Paphos.

“Views of Infinity”, is a geometric marble installation by Harry Paspallis.

It took Ioannidou a year to complete her sculpture, which leans on a rock and pays homage to Aphrodite, the goddess of love. She told the Cyprus Mail the idea behind her work. “The sculpture is of a young woman who looks after the place where Aphrodite lived and wants to be like her.” The beautiful piece of art is crafted in bronze, the only material she could think of using at this spot she said.
“I wanted to use something that would look right set next to the castle and as the sea is behind, the waves and the weather could damage other material. Bronze is best.”

All five artists involved have completed a number of exhibitions and projects together, she said, in Cyprus and abroad. She said that the group wanted to be involved in Paphos’ winning bid for the prestigious culture capital title and that it was important to them to create installations that would leave ‘something behind.’  “We didn’t want this to be just like a festival or exhibition for a few days only, we wanted to leave a legacy for people to see.”

A spokesman for ‘Pafos2017’ said: “We wanted to transform the coastal walkway, where most of the works will be placed, into an open air gallery for tourists and locals, and give them a reasons to walk along this path.”

‘Red Poppy’ by Andreas Paraskevas
In the upcoming months, and during the year of Paphos European capital of culture title, nine more sculptures and installations will be placed in the area of Kato Paphos.  The artists will be creating sculptures and other artworks for open air venues, giving a new dimension to the concept and philosophy of the open air factory, said the spokesman.  “The theme was for them to create works which are to do with the history of Paphos, the sea and the sun, things that really mean something to Paphos. We wanted them to be not just current but for many years to come in the future.”
Ioannidou has already completed her second sculpture for the project, also a bronze, that of a young fisherman; a small boy with a big fish, she said.
