Cyprus Mail 6 November 2020 - by Gina Agapiou

The government on Friday received a €300,000 neonatal ambulance for the transportation of premature infants to Makarios hospital in Nicosia and Limassol general hospital.

The ambulance will also serve the British bases and northern Cyprus.

The Miracle Babies association donated the ambulance with the aim to ensure the safe transportation of premature babies and pregnant women.

“The specially designed ambulance that the association delivers today, with state-of-the-art equipment and technology, is an extremely important contribution to the improvement of the provided services and the enhancement of the work performed in the Neonatal and Premature Intensive Care Unit,” President Nicos Anastasiades said after accepting the donation.

The ambulance is the first one of its kind in the country.

Cyprus has high viability rate for premature babies, standing at 98 per cent, the president said and ensured the state will continue to provide “high quality specialised care” for those babies and their families.

He added that there is an increased rate of premature births in the country, and Makarios state hospital is the only one with a neonatal intensive care unit.

The unit “thanks to the hard work and tireless dedication of the highly specialised medical and nursing staff is a station and reference point for our country” the president said.

“We are united by the common purpose that every baby, no matter how small it is born, deserves the best possible start in their life,” said the president of the association Elena Megalemou Triantafillidou.
