WRITTEN STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT, MR NICOS ANASTASIADES, REGARDING FAMAGUSTA

08-10-2020 13:34

Written statement by the President of the Republic Mr Nicos Anastasiades

I consider the decision by Turkey and the occupation regime to extend for use part of the beach front of the fenced city of Famagusta, as an illegal act and a flagrant violation of international law and the resolutions of the UN Security Council 550 (1984) and 789 (1992).

The Republic of Cyprus has not and will not be inactive. It has already protested against these violations to the Security Council and its five Permanent Members, to the UN Secretary General, to the heads of the Institutions of the European Union, to the leaders of the EU member states, as well as to all international fora in which the Republic of Cyprus participates.

At the same time, Turkey and the occupation regime are called on to comply with the decisions of the Security Council and the UN resolutions, as well as with everything included in the recent European Council Conclusions, thus terminating the unilateral illegal acts, in order to allow a new initiative by the UN SG to take place with the aim to find a permanent solution to the Cyprus problem, within the framework of everything that has been agreed and are set out by a number of resolutions of the UN and decisions by the UN SC, as well as within the framework of the European principles and values.
