WHEN THE TIME CHANGES - WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW

 Filenews 10 October 2020

On the last Sunday in October the time changes as it does every year, with the clock indicators going back an hour in the morning. Specifically, at 4 a.m. in the morning, we'll turn the clock markers back an hour.

The time change for 2020 will take place in the early hours of the last Sunday in October and in particular on 25 October. The issue that has been of great concern in recent times is the decision of the European Parliament, which voted to end from 2021 the practice of adjusting clocks by one hour in spring and autumn.

According to the European Parliament's decision, the time change has not yet been 'locked in' because for the countries of the European Union, it will have to stop on the last Sunday of March 2021, which wish to maintain daylight saving time permanently, while for Member States wishing to have winter time, the change will take place on the last Sunday in October 2021.

In February 2018, the European Parliament asked the European Commission, in a resolution, to carry out a 'thorough assessment of the current directive on summer time arrangements and to submit a proposal for its revision'.

The Commission organised a public consultation in the summer of 2018, involving 4.6 million people. European citizens, 84% of whom were in favour of stopping the six-month changes, and 16% against.

On 12 September 2018, the European Commission presented a proposal to stop seasonal changes in 2019, but Parliament transferred the decision of the Member States for two years. The measure of time change has the main advantage of saving energy. In total, during the seven months of daylight saving 210 hours of electricity by taking advantage of the Sun.
