THE [PAPHOS] PURSUIT UNCOVERED A DRUG TRAFFICKING RING

 Filenews 21 October 2020

A large "fish" appears to have been caught by Paphos Drug Squad [YKAN] after Tuesday afternoon's incident, when it pursued a suspicious vehicle, with its members even using their service weapons to immobilize it.

The four people arrested in the incident appear, according to the Police, to be members of a drug trafficking ring with a pancyprian action. In addition to the six kilos of drugs and six thousand euros estimated to be a supply product, it is the result of the operation, which is expected to continue.

Arrested are three Greek Cypriots from Larnaca and an Albanian who presented a fake Italian identity card. The circuit was uncovered after YKAN was tracking in a suspicious vehicle in which the Albanian was on board. He was found handing over a quantity of one kilo of cannabis to a driver of a second vehicle in which two other persons were on board.

Officers intervened and attempted to stop the vehicle in which the drugs were delivered. His driver, however, developed a dizzying speed by turning the vehicle against the members of the force. A chase ensued in the area of "Universal" on the borders of Kato Paphos and Geroskipou, during which the police officers used their service weapons in order to force the driver to stop. After the suspicious vehicle collided with three force vehicles and a police officer was slightly injured, it was eventually stopped.

In the vehicle it was found that three Greek Cypriots from Larnaca aged 26,30 and 31 were on board who were arrested. The 26-year-old complained of not feeling well, was examined by a doctor at Paphos Hospital and returned to detention.

The police then tracked down the person who delivered the drugs. This is a 37-year-old Albanian who presented a fake Italian identity card. Another 5.5 kg of drugs and the sum of 6,165 euros were found in a warehouse managed by the Albanian in Paphos.

All four are expected to be brought to court in Paphos for issuing their detention orders.
