The need for immediate additional measures to stem the further transmission of the coronavirus was underlined by the member of the Epidemiological Group, Petros Karagiannis. It is noted that the Epidemiological Group today had a meeting with the Minister of Health, Konstantinos Ioannou for an evaluation of this epidemiological picture.
Speaking on omega's midday show, Mr Karagiannis explained that these are measures that had been implemented in the past – in Limassol in the summer and recently in Larnaca – and had paid off. He gave as an example the limitation of the number of people entitled to gather at some events indoors and the tightening of the measure of distance between tables.
"In areas where these measures were not implemented we are currently seeing chains developing, not one or two, but multiple ones," Mr Karagiannis said, stressing that this is worrying. He specifically referred to the hospitals, which he said we had to protect.
"So we should no longer be late if we suddenly find that the situation is getting out of hand," Mr Karagiannis said, noting that we absolutely need to implement more stringent measures.
Asked about the possibility of local lockdown, Mr Karagiannis replied that he did not see it at the moment. "What we need to achieve at the moment is to flatten the number of cases to 20s and 10s and gradually bring them back into single digits," he said, but stressed that this would not be achieved if some continue to behave irresponsibly.
