INVESTORS TURN THEIR BACKS ON PAPHOS MARINA

Filenews 6 October 2020 - by Dora Christodoulou

Zero interest after the continuous setbacks and chronic legal tug-of-war, is observed regarding the open competition for the purchase of services of specialized consultants/scholars, launched by the Ministry of Tourism in order to examine the issue of the combined development of marina and infrastructure for the reception of cruise ships in Kisonerga.

This development, although expected, especially at this time due to the unprecedented situation experienced by the whole world with the pandemic, has caused great concern to the economic operators of Paphos who see a project, pioneered by the province, heading for cancellation at a time when all the other coastal provinces now have it in the plans.

The situation is characterized as pivotal by local authorities, since the constant cancellations and legal appeals have now added to the differences in priorities on the part of large advisory houses, due to covid. This was also the reason why the Ministry of Tourism extended the time frame for expressions of interest with a view to obtaining satisfactory and above all qualitative interest in this competition.

On a theoretical level, based on the latest design, the results of the study and the recommendations of the experts on the best choice (whether it is a combination development or an exclusive marina development) will be submitted to the Council of Ministers for final approval. A second competition will follow, concerning the provision of consultancy/student services, in support of the State Department, as regards the preparation of the terms of the open tender and the conduct of the tendering procedure, which is expected to result in the finding of a strategic investor for the implementation of the project.

In practice, however, more and more investment and economic operators in Paphos are openly expressing their doubts as to whether the great project can be carried out in the foreseeable future.
