The Cyprus hotel managers association Pasydixe on Tuesday called for standardised rankings for all EU countries when it comes to Covid measures.
In an announcement the association said measures, which should be immediate, should be standardised for EU and Schengen countries, and the UK and possibly Russia could have their categories changed to make it easier for them to visit Cyprus.
The UK and Russia were Cyprus’ two main sources of tourism. The UK is currently in category B, meaning arrivals need to have a negative Covid test. Russia is in category C, which bars flights from there.
Pasydixe , like travel agents, have asked for the time limit on tests to be changed from 72 hours to 96. Many travellers have found that they cannot make the 72-hour window on time from test to departure, especially if weekend are involved due to difficulty getting tested..
The association also called for rapid tests on departure for all passengers to all destinations, saying this would be a catalyst to help strengthen the tourism industry, also “provided that strict protocols and sampling controls are maintained”.
“The goal of all of us is to make sure that next year is a year of recovery so that, gradually, Cypriot tourism can regain its normal pace with all the essential benefits for the economy of our country,” Pasydixe said.
