The Green party and independent MP Anna Theologou said they would be submitting a proposal to dissolve parliament on Friday and have also called on the government to resign following the cash for passports scandal uncovered by Al Jazeera.
The party said the government’s responsibility was overwhelming after it failed miserably to “draw and implement a proper investment programme that would help the real economy and support social cohesion.”
The Cypriot programme, the party said, was used a tool of wide corruption resulting in the international vilification of Cyprus in critical period.
Its impact on the environment and society was also excessively big, the party added.
The scandal sparked a huge public backlash, which forced the resignations of House president Demetris Syllouris and Akel MP Christakis Giovanis who were caught on film offering help to a Chinese businessman with a criminal record to secure citizenship.
“It is a proposal stemming from the peoples’ reaction,” Green party chairman Charalambos Theopemptou told the Cyprus Mail.
He said there was public suspicion and outrage concerning parliament and it would be the right thing for the current composition to change if the people choose to do so.
Theopemptou said he hoped the voters’ criterion would be better; “I am not saying everyone should vote for the Green party,” but perhaps select better people.
“Those responsible for intensifying corruption cannot be the same people who would find the solutions for the scourge that undermines the state’s institutional foundations,” the Green party said.
