DEATH AND 21 NEW CASES - WEDNESDAY - Updated with additional information

A new death of a 62-year-old man with no underlying illnesses who was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of nicosia General Hospital, announced today the Ministry of Health.

According to the announcement, the 62-year-old's final cause of death is COVID-19. Therefore, the total number of deaths in SARS-CoV-2-positive patients is 31, and deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 are 24, 17 men and 7 women, with an average age of 72 years.

In addition, the Ministry of Health announces that, according to an update received today by the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit from contracting laboratories, a total of 2,095 laboratory diagnoses identified 21 new cases of COVID-19 disease.

In detail, virus-positive individuals emerged as follows:

  • Of 173 samples taken through the process of tracing contacts of already confirmed cases, 9 cases were identified.
  • Of 271 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals, 1 case was identified.
  • Of 864 samples taken through a private initiative, 9 cases were identified.
  • Of 245 samples taken as part of the referral programme by Personal Physicians and special teams control through the Public Health Clinics, 1 case was identified.
  • Of 85 samples taken as part of a random check carried out by the COP on Associations participating in its competitions, 1 case was detected.

Specific:

  • 9 incidents were identified through a private initiative concerning:
  1. A person who came from India on 28/9 and did the test to be released from quarantine, even though the 12 days had not passed since his arrival.
  2. A person who had brains in the period from 27-30/9.
  3. A person who came back from London on 3/10 with a negative test. He repeated the test to visit a relative.
  4. A person who had a sore throat and weakness at 2/10.
  5. Two people (couple) one of whom had come from England on 30/9 with a negative test. On29/9, before travelling, he reported having myalgia and fatigue, but still travelled. On 4/10 he developed fever and weakness in the other person.
  6. One person is a Portuguese flight attendant who did the examination as part of a regular check-up they do due to occupation.
  7. One person had a fever and a cough on 5/10.
  8. One person came from London on 3/10 with a negative test and today developed a fever.
  • 9 new cases were detected by tracing contacts of already confirmed cases:
  1. Three people are contacts from the family environment of a case announced on 5/10 by referral by the Doctor's Staff with symptoms (fever and myalgia). They did the test privately even though they had a scheduled appointment and through tracing.
  2. A person is contacted from the family environment of a case announced on 3/10 by a private initiative due to symptoms.
  3. One person is a case contact announced on 4/10 by a referral from a Personal Physician.
  4. One person is a case contact announced on 5/10 through tracing and is linked to cluster workers at a Foundation in Nicosia Province.
  5. One person is contact of the case announced on 5/10 by the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  6. Two people from the family environment of the cases announced on 5/10. Yesterday we announced another contact person from the working environment of one of the two people. Total cluster has 5 cases.
  • 1 incident was detected by referral by a Personal Physician This is a person who has had symptoms (cough) since 4/10.
  • 1 incident from the COP program: This is a football player from Halcanora Idaliou. He is a student at a high school in Nicosia Province.
  • 1 incident from the Microbiological Laboratories of General Hospitals: Concerns a person who had a headache on 2/10 and 7/10 shortness of breath and visited the PAPHOS TEP this morning. It also reports contact with a case announced on 3/10.

In addition, the following laboratory tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:

  • From samples taken as part of the control programme for pupils, teachers and school staff, 138 laboratory tests were completed, and
  • Of samples taken as part of the screening of passengers and repatriated persons, 319 laboratory diagnoses were carried out.

Therefore, and on the basis of the data so far, the total number of cases is 1,897.

In addition, four people tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus are being treated at Famagusta General Hospital. Three discharges were given. In addition, two patients are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
