When leaving your property, the Police recommendation is to ensure that no car keys are left in the house.  This follows a number of incidents where thieves have broken into properties, found car keys and driven away the vehicle.

To add to the problem, if the householder is away, it can be several days or weeks before anyone notices that the vehicle has gone.  

Consider leaving spare keys [for the car and/or property] with a neighbour or friend if you are going to be away, and if with a friend, advise the neighbour who to contact if they notice anything different about the property.
