CYPRUS' DRAINING WATER RESERVES AT 20%

From InCyprus - Local News 27/1016

The continuing drought is draining the islands water reserves, with Asprokremmos Dam, the largest in Paphos now at 38,6% of capacity.

The present situation of the island’s dams is dismal to say the least. With a total capacity of 290.80 million cubic meters, the islands water reserves at present are at 59.099 million cubic meters or 20.3%.
According to Water Development Department technical engineer, Phedros Rousis, Asprokremmos Dam with a 52 million cubic meter capacity at the moment only contains 20.2 million cubic meters compared to last year’s 36 million cubic meters or 69% of capacity.
Asprokremos reached its worst ever levels in 2008 when water levels registered a mere 2.4% of capacity, while in 2012, the dam had reached its capacity and had in fact overflowed.
Smaller dams like those at Germasoyeia, Xyliatos and Achna are virtually empty and are standing at 3.2%, 3.9% and 7.8% respectively.
The island’s largest dam, Kouris with a 115 million cubic meter capacity is at 10.3% or 11.87 million cubic meters.
The maximum levels in the islands dams was registered at 111.68 million cubic meters in 2016, with both Asprokremmos and Kouris registering their maximum 35 and 21 million cubic meter levels respectively in February.
Total inflow to the island dams for 2015/2016 period was a mere 17.9 million cubic meters, nearly 100 cubic meters less than the corresponding 2014/2015 period.
In the meantime, the dwindling water reserves in Asprokremmos Dam revealed an overturned car on Tuesday afternoon close to one of its banks.
Members of the public who saw the car informed the police, who in turn had the car winched from the dam on Wednesday.
Paphos traffic chief, Zenonas Psathitis, announced that initial investigations have revealed that the car was reported stolen from Limassol in 2009
