Genel Özellikleri
Amerika'nın güney yarısını oluşturan kıta. Büyük Okyanus'un doğusunda, Atlantik Okyanusu'nun batısında, Kuzey Amerika'nın güneyinde ve Antarktika'nın kuzeyinde bulunur. Güney Amerika,Amerika ismini Amerigo Vespucci den sonra alır. Çünkü o Amerika'nın batı Hindistan olmadığını söyleyen ilk Avrupalı idi. Fakat Yeni dünya Avrupalı'larca bilinmiyordu. Güney Amerika 17.840.000 km kare lik bir alana sahiptir. Veya yaklaşık olarak Dünya yüzeyinin %3.5'i dir. 2005 yılına göre nüfusu tahminen 371.000.000 dan daha fazla idi. Güney Amerika alan sıralamasında dördüncü(Asya,Afrika ve Kuzey Amerika'dan sonra) ve nüfusta beşincidir (Asya, Arika, Avrupa ve Kuzey Amerika'dan sonra).
