Up, Up, and Away (Exercises to Improve Your Vertical Jump)


I don't know if there's something strange in the air lately, but for whatever reason, I've gotten a lot of questions about how to improve a vertical jump. Some individuals are naturally gifted with hops, but for the rest of us who need to work hard to become more powerful, we have to add more explosive movements into our routines. If you want to sky like Jordan, you want to make sure you're using the correct exercises.

This could be you! (Don't quote me on that, though...)
So what determines how high you can jump? There are a couple of factors, but I'll name the most pertinent:
  • Muscle fiber distribution. Okay, so, in a nutshell, you have two different types of muscle fibers: type I and type II. Type I fibers (also known as slow twitch), do not fatigue easily. An endurance athlete will have well-developed type I fibers. Think: marathon runner. Type II fibers (also known as fast twitch) are split up into type IIa and IIb, and type IIb is the most easily fatigued. Someone with a higher percentage of type IIb fibers would be a 100 meter sprinter or a javelin thrower. Movements that are really short in nature require more speed and power. The fiber makeup of a muscle is determined by your genetics, but your training can help express and further develop either fast twitch or slow twitch fibers. If you train in an explosive, high-intensity manner, you are going to develop your fast twitch fibers to the best of your genetic ability.
  • Rate of force development. This builds on the first bullet point. Let's say you tried to do a power clean for the first time. Initially, while you're learning the movement, you will probably pretty slow moving under the barbell. Two years later, your bar speed will be significantly faster. Granted, you've also become more competent and confident with the movement, and you are stronger, but your rate of force development (RFD) has improved significantly. How quickly you can express force is incredibly important in working your ups.
Now that the bulk of the science-y stuff is out of the way, we can get to the meat of the article: here some exercises that will help you leap tall buildings in a single bound. (Actually, maybe don't try to jump buildings just yet...)
  1. Back squats (I have faith I don't need to post a video for this one...)
  2. Power cleans
  3. Power snatches
  4. Push jerks
  5. Depth jumps
  6. Jumping lunges
  7. Bulgarian split squat jumps
  8. Low hurdle hops
  9. Barbell jumping squats (no need to go heavy, here. Maybe 20-30% of your best squat.)
  10. Barbell pogo jumps (similar as the previous exercise, but not as much hip/knee bend)
Ideally, we want to train strength in conjunction with plyometrics. For example, a six week study by Adams and his colleagues found that individuals who performed strength and plyometric exercises, saw a greater increase in vertical jump than the strength group and the plyometrics group alone: 
"Examination of the mean scores shows that the [strength] group increased 3.30 centimeters in vertical jump, the [plyometrics] group increased 3.81 centimeters and the [strength/plyometrics] group increased 10.67 centimeters. The results indicate that both [strength] and [plyometric] training are necessary for improving hip and thigh power production as measured by vertical jumping ability."
 A 10.67 centimeter increase in vertical jump in only 6 weeks is pretty solid! Basically, just jumping a lot will increase your jumping height, but if you perform strength training on top of that, your results will be significantly better.

If you want to get the most bang for your buck, Olympic weightlifting (snatch, clean, and jerk) movements are superior. "Olympic [weightlifting] exercises seemed to produce broader performance improvements than [vertical jump] exercises in physically active subjects," found Tricoli et. al. They continue to say, "groups using the [weightlifting] program increased [10 meter sprinting speed] more than those using the [vertical jump] program." So, not only did these movements effect the jumping height of the test subjects, but it also made them sprint faster!

In short, if you're looking to improve your jumps, try the exercises in the above list. Both strength training and plyometric training can be combined so that you can slam dunk like the pros in no time.

Socks- Handknit by Beehive 1940

I picked up this sock booklet at an estate sale recently. Dated 1940, it is full of  socks for every age and type! And since the Fall is the perfect time to start stocking up on socks or working on Christmas presents, I decided to share it today.

"Beehive Sock Yarn is Distinguished for is neat footwork!" 


I love the lace topped sock in the right-hand corner. Hopefully, someday I will get around to making them! (The pattern is scanned at the bottom.) They are labeled as children's socks, but I am sure there is a way to adapt them.

Argyle socks look like they would take a bit more concentration. But I agree, they are "Perennially Smart"!


And what pattern book of this era would be complete without a Service Sock!

Big Fan Says "I HATE YOU!"


The first post-publication feedback I received on my latest Sebastian McCabe – Jeff Cody book certainly caught my attention.
“First let's get this clear I HATE YOU!” Deacon Ken Ramsey wrote to me after reading Bookmarkedfor Murder.

Is that any way for a man of the cloth to talk? And he claimed to like the series! But I kept reading:
“I promised myself I was only going to read one chapter a day no matter what. This as opposed to my usual quaffing it down like a Big Mac meal. I couldn’t resist and went and finished it today. In my humble opinion this is your best work to date! I actually didn’t figure it out until late into the story.”

Admittedly, he’s prejudiced. Deacon Ken is one two experts – both Sherlockians, retired military officers, and former sheriffs – whom I occasionally ask questions about police procedure. (Although my books are not notable for their realism, I do try to avoid situations that would interfere with the willing suspension of disbelief.)
So how about a more objective review? Or several?

A Couple New Picture Additions to the Collection

I was going to subtitle this "A Hick and a Brick", but decided that didn't sound very nice. Recently, two fellow history aficionados have been kind enough to allow me to post pictures of theirs on the blog, and I wanted to make sure that everyone got a chance to see them. They've been added to the appropriate original posts, but I wanted to make sure they didn't get lost in the shuffle. One image is an old (almost 100 years) photograph of an old man, while the other is a new image of an old artifact. Both are fascinating and I'm thrilled to be able to share them.

The first picture is one you might have seen alluded to in a comment recently, and it kind of blew my mind when I saw it. I honestly never even considered the possibility that we might one day have a photograph of this man, but here we are. The picture was taken near Pleasant Hill (south of Corner Ketch) in 1921, and comes to us from Rob Hobdell, the grandson of the original photographer.

The subject of the photograph is a German immigrant named William Losien, but he was much better known as Dutch Billy. The original post has all the details, but the short version is that Billy, born in Germany in 1844, came to the United States at the age of 38 in 1882. He worked as a farmhand and butcher, but also made much of his living as a hunter and trapper. He was a friendly type, but kept largely to himself in his cabin in the woods. He died by his own hand in December 1927, surrounded by his beloved hunting dogs.

In addition to the fabulous (just by its very existence) picture, we can add a few more details to the story of Dutch Billy, by way of family lore passed on by Rob. From what he's been told, Billy was a devout Quaker (and therefore a pacifist), and left Germany to avoid conscription into the army. With some aid from by a network set up by the Society of Friends to help conscientious objectors, Billy was directed to the community surrounding the Mill Creek Meeting. (In the story Rob was told it was the Union Meeting, but with "Union" being the name taken by Corner Ketch when it got a Post Office in the 1870's, I think it's safe to say the Union Meeting was a local name for Mill Creek.) Depending on the version of the story, either Billy attended the meeting for a while before drifting away or he lived in the woods by himself from the start.

One piece of information Rob shared gives us some insight as to why Billy may have chosen to live his secluded lifestyle. Apparently he was afraid of being found by German spies and returned home to be hung for desertion. I don't know whether there was any realistic reason to fear this or if it was just paranoia, but it does help explain why he never wanted to settle on a permanent homestead. It also explains why Billy had Rob's Great-Grandmother Myrtle Whiteman Lamborn send and receive letters to and from his mother in Germany. (Myrtle was the daughter of Henry Whiteman, whose house was covered in a previous post.) There seems to be a disagreement as to whether this practice began with Myrtle's mother Sarah Ann (Moore) or her mother-in-law Emma (Dixon) Lamborn. In either case Billy was always welcomed at the Lamborn's home near Ashland, and often attended holiday meals there.

Incidentally, Rob states that the photograph was taken by his grandfather Nelson Hobdell, likely on a day when he and wife Mildred were out riding around on their Indian motorcycle, with Mildred of course in the sidecar.

Peach Kaolin Company brick

The other recently-acquired photograph is actually a new one, but of an old item. It's a picture of a brick from the Peach Kaolin Company, Mermaid, Del. It was found by a local homeowner in the creek behind Renee Lane, in the Chestnut Valley neighborhood off of Paper Mill Road (more or less across from the Independence School). That little creek (I don't even know if it has a name) runs pretty much through the middle of the former site of the Peach Kaolin Company. The business, the family that ran it, and the house they owned were all featured in a post a few years ago.

The brick itself is a firebrick, made to be used in high-temperature applications, such as fireplaces, kilns, or furnaces. When William Peach and his siblings began mining the kaolin clay from their property they built a processing plant onsite to make bricks such as this one. The owner says that there appears to be some mortar on the reverse side, so this one may have been part of a structure at the site. I had only ever seen one other photograph of a brick like this, but that one was taken some forty years ago, and I have no idea what became of that brick. (And I only recently came across that picture.)

Both of these photographs are wonderful records of subjects we knew existed, but maybe never thought we'd actually see. They're also another great example of why the job of chronicling this history will never be done -- there's always more stuff out there to be found.
