I have reservations about doing intimate scenes: Barun Sobti

The much-married Barun Sobti talks about how bold he can get on screen in a chat with Neha Maheshwri Bhagat.


You have worked in a BPO for seven long years before you took to acting. How has your life changed since then?
I was working with a BPO in Delhi, but my friends insisted that I try my luck in acting as they predicted I have a great future in acting. I sent my pictures and one thing led to another. I am still rooted, but definitely my life has changed. Acting means more pressure. It's a rather consuming job where you are working for 30 days a month and 12 hours a day unlike a BPO where you get a long weekend off work. There is a lot of money riding on an actor and if the show doesn't work, the poor actor has to bear the brunt of it.

What kind of response do you get from your female fan base?
People are usually scared of me because of the arrogant character I play. They stare at me with fear that I might just scold them and often run away from me. A lot of times when I go out with my wife and when I'm not around, they ask her if it's fine to click pictures with me and if I won't scold them. My wife simply tells them that I'm the coolest guy around.


You have always been tight-lipped about your personal life. Do you fear losing out on your female fan following if you disclose your relationship status?
I have never hidden my marital status. I have been married for a year-and-a-half now to Pashmeen Manchanda, who also happens to be my first girlfriend.


Do you think the consummation scene in your show Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon was a little abrupt? Who would want to consummate the marriage in a situation where the couple is kidnapped and holed up in a dingy place?
I don't really know. The progression of a story depends on a lot of things. Everyone wanted to see the proximity between Arnav and Khushi and I feel that was the need of the hour. I just take it as my job.


Do you ever feel uncomfortable doing such scenes?
It's totally awkward to do such scenes. It's more difficult for a girl to do such a scene than
a male actor. But we managed to pull it off really well. We were simply playing our parts and had fun enacting the scene. However, I am not sure if I would incorporate such a scene if I were the producer.


Did you happen to see the consummation scene of Priya and Ram in Bade Achhe Laggte Hain? Are you comfortable locking lips on screen?
I think that was trending more than anything else. It became the toast of the town and was being talked about widely. It's got to do with the demand of the script and depends on the makers. But I have my reservations on doing intimate scenes and won't be comfortable going overboard.


How does your wife react to such bold scenes?
My wife knows that I love her too much so she is fine with the intimate scenes I do. She also knows that only if my role justifies such a scene will I do it. She understands my work as an actor.


Tell us a bit about the man behind the actor?
I am simple guy. I love my house and stay back home when I get time off shoots. I hardly party. I am not 19 anymore.

Who according to you is the most beautiful actress in television and the Bollywood industry?
Now, that's quite an uncomfortable question to answer. I would say all the girls I have worked with right from Neha Janpandit, Sanaya Irani and Daljeet Bhanot. In Bollywood, I like Sonali Bendre.


Will you ever quit TV for Bollywood?
Acting matters to me and the medium is of least concern. If the next opportunity I get after this movie is of a promising television content, I will take it up. The work has to excite me.

Three Bean Salad

I have been wanting to write a post on this for a while, but I was sure that the non-gardeners will be totally bored, so I have been holding off. However, this year, whether you know it or not, I tried vegetable gardening for the first time. In case you too are a new gardener (I have had house plants for years and they have always flourished but this is my first food garden) I thought I would talk a little bit about the garden and some of the snags I have run into so far.

First, let me say that this post is to celebrate the fact that I have food. Three beans, to be exact! So, although a three bean salad may be a little small, I am very excited that I have made something that is edible! I made food with my own hands! I also have eaten basil, cilantro and chives from my little garden so far! It's very exciting.

Let's start off by saying what I started off with. I started seeds on May 14: cucumbers (bush), zucchini, tomatoes (bush), beets, butter lettuce, spinach, eggplant (bush), tri-colored beans (bush), cilantro, parsley, basil, chives, squash, scallions, southwestern pepper trio, carrots & dill.

So far I have killed: the cucumber, both lettuces and the dill. So I am 13 - 4. Maybe that's not Superbowl worthy, but it's not too bad.

The details: Most of my plants are in 8" pots. I bought them at the $1 aisle in Target and poked holes in the bottoms. The cherry tomato and the squash are in cardboard boxes lined with plastic shopping bags (with holes poked in the bottom). I used Miracle Grow potting soil and Renee's Garden Seeds.

What's going wrong? I think my worst fault is OVER watering. I know. In fact, the cucumber started "wilting" so I watered it. It wilted some more; I gave it more water... when my squash also started "wilting" I realized that since they grow along the ground, all they were doing was bending down so they could grow! Oops! Also, my squash leaves started yellowing. A couple days without water did the trick!

I was paranoid, since I am growing everything in containers, that the plants would not get enough water. I read that they dry out more quickly since they are getting sun from all sides. However, I still ended up giving them too much water. I think (correct me if I am wrong!) that tomatoes need more water than many of the other veggies, but many of them need to be left alone once in a while! Too much "care" was killing them!

I also should have used bigger pots. Some of the plants are much smaller than they should be and I am afraid that my bush tomatoes may not bear fruit, since the cherry tomatoes I put in the box are flowering right now and they were planted afterward. 

What's going right? I also read that watering will wash out many of the nutrients, so I recently added a bit of miracle grow, which really perked everything up! This also beefs up the argument against over watering. Since then, I have been watering with "coffee ground tea", which is just the coffee grounds mixed into a couple of gallons of water.

Where do we stand? After about 2 months, like I said, I have harvested basil, green beans, chives and cilantro. I have no cherry tomato fruits, but the plant is getting big and bushy and I just got flowers, so it's only a matter of time! I have squash flowers (tons!). The eggplant, beets and peppers are still just leaves.

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 25th July 2012 Written Update

Episode starts with Buaji asking Khushi what happened. Khushi sends Buaji to drink water so she doesn’t see Arnav and then she calls Arnav. She asks him where he is. Arnav says outside your home. Khushi says him to come to hospital and pick her up. Arnav says ok and he leaves. Khushi takes glass of water from Buaji and again keeps her busy so she doesn’t see Arnav. Buaji asks her, what is she doing. Khushi says she wants to buy ‘baniyan’ and asks her to go with her. Buaji asks for Arnav? As soon as Arnav leaves from there, Khushi says she wanted to buy but anymore and they go back to home.

Khushi again calls Arnav and tells him she has reached home so he doesn’t have to come now. Arnav says what? Buaji asks Khushi who is it. Arnav tells Khushi that’s Buaji’s voice right? Khushi says Arnav, Buaji needs rest. Arnav asks what did doctor say? Khushi says they couldn’t find doctor. She says doctor was sick as well and she tells him to go home and hangs up.

Someone calls Raizada house. Manorama picks up but no one says anything. Someone calls again and this time Nani picks up and again no one says anything. Manorama says who can do ‘repeat telecast’ and she asks Nani it’s not your boyfriend right? Nani says what are you saying. Anjali comes there and tells her she is going outside. Nani says she will also go with her but Anjali says she wants to go alone and she leaves.

Break 1..

Buaji is sleeping and someone knocks the door. Khushi opens the door and Arnav has brought doctor with him. He asks Khushi to move so doctor can go inside. Khushi asks why you brought him here? Arnav says, ‘To play hide-n-seek with you’ and then says so he can check Buaji and asks her to move. Khushi says Buaji is sleeping and asks doctor to come later. Arnav asks do patients need to be awake to check blood pressure? Doctor says no it’s fine. Khushi says Buaji is sleeping and he can’t wake up her. Doctor says not to worry. Arnav asks her what drama you doing? and he just takes doctor inside now.

They go to Buaji’s room and she is sleeping. Arnav says doctor don’t know what happened. Doctor says sometimes patients can look fine from outside but there can be problems inside. Khushi says correct. Doctor checks her and says she is.. Khushi interrupts and says she has pain in stomach. Khushi sends Arnav outside. While going Arnav asks what about blood pressure. Khushi again stops him and then Arnav says he is waiting outside.

Doctor says he will check Buaji’s blood pressure. Khushi asks rather he should check her blood pressure. She says to doctor that she will tell him truth. She tells him a story that her bahu made her suffer so much and then took her son away. Her daughter is unmarried and lives in Mumbai. Khushi says this ‘nanni si jaan’ (Buaji) lives alone. Khushi then says she likes to come here for Buaji but Arnav doesn’t let her so she had to make up a story. Doctor says he understands and he says he will talk with Arnav. Doctor says he will write a prescription but make sure Arnav doesn’t get that. Khushi thanks him and he leaves. Doctor goes to Arnav and says Khushi will have to stay here for few days. Arnav asks what happened to Buaji. Doctor says nothing much just minor illness and he leaves.

Khushi comes and tells him that she is going to get medicine. Arnav takes prescription from her hand and says he will go. Khushi tries to get it back from his hand but Arnav doesn’t let her take. Arnav says if you want this then I have a condition. Khushi asks what. Arnav says you know it. He goes to kiss her but Khushi takes prescription from his hand and says you lost this challenge. Arnav says may be and then he kisses her on cheek. Khushi is shocked. Arnav says he never loses his challenges. He says if you want anything then call and leaves. Khushi says I won’t. She touches her cheek then and smiles but then says stop it Khushi.

At Raizada home, Manorama is wondering. It’s been long time since Anjali left and then she goes outside. Anjali is talking with someone, Manorama wonders with whom she’s talking. He calls Anjali and goes to her and asks her with whom she was talking. Anjali takes out her phone and says she is talking with some aunty and right then her phone rings. Manorama looks at her. Anjali says may be call got cancelled. Manorama takes her inside.

Buaji says to Khushi that she saw a strange dream. Some wife was saying her husband asks her too many questions. Khushi starts coughing. Buaji says it was a very sad story.. he don’t let her go outside.. she wonders who was it.

Shukla ji calls again and Khushi picks it up. She hangs up in anger. Someone knocks the door and it’s Arnav again. Khushi asks him why did you do this? He asks her why did you do this? Buaji comes there and asks him to come inside.

Break 2..

Buaji asks him why you look tensed? Arnav says nothing much, and says he heard a very sad story when he was coming so he got upset. He then says the same story that Khushi had told to Doctor. Khushi is worried. Arnav is telling story and Khushi stops him and says she wants to talk with him and takes him away.

In a room, Arnav asks Khushi how dare she to lie him about Buaji. Khushi says leave that and says him how he dare to pay all the rent. She asks what do you think.. I can’t pay rent? Arnav says it doesn’t matter.. Khushi says it does.. and says she doesn’t want anything from Arnav. Arnav says I am your husband and I also have some responsibilities toward this house.

Episode ends.

Precap: Nani is telling Arnav that it’s been 6 months now after both Arnav and Aakash got married. Arnav in his room, checks calendar and says that’s why she went to Buaji’s house. .

Episode starts with Khushi entering her Buaji’s house. Buaji asks what is she doing there? Khushi is sad and crying. She goes and hugs her and says she was missing her a lot. Buaji says you could call then, why you had to come here for that. Khushi asks why .. she can’t come to meet her? Buaji says you can definitely come, and then she sees her bag and asks what is that?

Arnav is driving back to home and he sees Khushi’s phone in his car.

Khushi takes out ‘laddu’s and asks Buaji if she gives her that then would she let Khushi stay there? Buaji asks but what has happened? You just came few days ago on your birthday. But before she says anything more, Khushi puts a ‘laddu’ in her mouth and goes to make food as she’s hungry.

Arnav comes back and is outside home. Inside house, Khushi is saying to Buaji that she will make food today. She sees Arnav outside of their door and she gets shocked. Arnav rings the door and Buaji goes to open the door. Buaji is about to open the door but Khushi sends her to kitchen saying ‘that rice’. Khushi opens door now. Khushi then takes off her hands from his collar. She says him, Buaji just slept and you’re making noise here. Buaji in kitchen wonders about rice. Arnav gives her phone to Khushi and asks if everything is fine. If not then he can call doctor. Khushi says everything is fine. She has to make food now. Arnav says okay, take care and leaves.

Break 1..

Khushi goes to Devi ma and asks to forget her as she is lying since morning to everyone. She says but what she can do, she has no other option. How can she tell him that she has left Raizada house. And anyways her and Arnav’s relationship is just for some time. She says when she saw Anjali’s face in morning, she felt what Anjali wanted to do. Anjali talked with her but …. she can’t see Anjali like this anymore. Khushi says Anjali will only stay happy if she is not around her. And if Anjali is sad then Arnav will be sad which he can’t see. Buaji asks her what were you saying rice. Khushi says have to make them. Buaji then asks who was on the door. Khushi says someone came to ask for vote.

Arnav back at Raizada house. Payal asks her if Buaji is fine. Nani also asks how is she. Arnav says should be fine. Nani asks that means you didn’t meet her? Arnav says no and then Nani tells him to call her. Arnav calls Khushi and asks her to give it to Buaji. Khushi says she is sleeping but Buaji is talking loudly and Arnav hears it and he says seems like she woke up and asks her to give her phone as Nani and Payal want to talk with her. At the same time, someone else calls at Buaji’s house number and Khushi goes to pick it up. She talks about home rent. Arnav hears it. He asks whose call was it. Khushi says leave it and she says to give phone to Nani. Arnav says give to Buaji. Khushi says give to Nani else she won’t give it to Buaji. Arnav says, ‘this girl is crazy’ and he gives phone to Nani. Khushi talks with Nani in Buaji’s voice. By mistake, she says Nani ji but then she coughs and says she is fine in Buaji’s voice. Nani asks what happened to your voice. She says she got ill. Nani says not to worry, Khushi is there now and she will take care of you. Nani then asks if she comes there, but Khushi says no. And then Nani gives phone to Payal.

Buaji comes there and asks Khushi what was happening. Khushi says she was talking with Preeto. Buaji asks then why were you saying Nandkishore and why were you coughing? Khushi says she just was copying everyone, her, mami ji etc.. She says Hello Hi Bye Bye and leaves.

Arnav tells to Aakash, he will have to cancel a Mumbai deal but Aakash says he will go there. Arnav then asks Aakash if everything is fine between him and Payal. Aakash says everything is fine and leaves.

Aakash is talking on phone and he says he got the ticket. Manorama asks him for how many days he is going. He says he will be back in few days. He then asks Payal if she wants to go with him. Nani says it’s wonderful idea and tells Payal to go to Mumbai with him. Aakash says to Payal, he’s going to pack his bag and if she wants to go then tell him fast.

Manorama says Khushi went to Buaji’s house. Payal will fly with Aakash. What she will do.. sit at home with Nani? Payal tells her, she can’t go with Aakash. Khushi is not there so Payal should stay at home.

Payal comes to her room. Aakash is on phone and he says an extra ticket for Payal but Payal stops him. He asks her what happened? You’re not coming? Payal says Khushi is not here and.. Aakash says right.. Khushi.. Buaji.. you just stay here and he leaves.

Aakash is leaving home now and Manorama is crying and says him to take care. Aakash says not to worry, he will be back soon. Manorama then gives him a warning that Mumbai is not like Delhi and says sea is dangerous there and asks him not to go near it.

Payal asks him if he took his ticket. Nani says Payal that she should have gone with him. Aakash says he will be busy there so it’s okay. Anjali says him to take care and Arnav says he will drop him to Air port and on returning, he will go at Buaji’s house as well. Nani says this time meet with Buaji. They leave.. Nani and Anjali also leave. Manorama goes to Payal and asks her why are you crying? Your husband left that’s why or your trip plan got crashed that’s why? She then leaves from there.

Break 2..

At Buaji’s house. Khushi remembers her moments with Arnav when he came to live there. Khushi says to herself, stop it now, you took this decision on your own and now you can’t go back. Buaji comes there and looks at her and asks with whom you’re talking? Khushi says with myself. Buaji asks are you fine? She asks if she had a fight with Arnav. Khushi says no and asks her to stop all those questions. Buaji says she will call Arnav herself. And at the same time, outside ‘gol gappa’ person comes and Khushi says leave all this… let’s go and eat gol gappe.

They are eating gol gappas and Khushi tells her Shukla ji called today. Buaji asks her did he say about rent? Khushi says yes. Buaji says since last few days there are many problems. He gave us time and now it’s been 3 months. Khushi says not to worry as she has came back. Buaji asks why are you saying like this? You have just came for few days right? She asks Khushi to tell the truth but Khushi this time puts Gol Gappa in her mouth. She hears a car sound and gets worried. Buaji asks what happened?

Arnav comes out from the car. Khushi has a worried look.

Precap: Arnav is on door with a doctor. Khushi opens the door. She asks him why you brought doctor here? Arnav says so he can check Buaji and asks her to move. Khushi says Buaji is sleeping and asks doctor to come back later. Arnav asks doctor, should patients be awake for blood pressure checking. Doctor says no, he can still check while she sleeping.

Malcolm X

In United States of America, There are two great leaders who contribute their whole life for African-American freedom and black people’s liberty. One is Martin Luther King Jr was a great African-American leader who believed in non violence and followed Christianity and the another was Malcolm X who was believed in revolution and followed Islam.

Different religion, different thinking and different ideology but the core aim is freedom and identity for black people in America. Both leaders were assassinated through gun shots at the age of 39. Malcolm X was killed at 1965 and Martin Luther King Jr was at 1968.

Malcolm X (1925-1965) was an African-American human-rights activist and Muslim Minister. By Born his was “Malcolm-Little” later he was convert into Islam through his brother which was influenced by Elijah Muhammad. His father was arrested and killed by white supremacists. Soon his mother was placed in mental hospital and he was sent to Forster home. At the age of 20, 1946 Malcolm X was prison for various illegal activities especially in drug trade. In 1952, Malcolm accepted Islam while he was in prison and joined as a member in “Nation of Islam” very soon he became one of the leaders in this Organisation which was lead by Elijah Muhammad. In 1964, he leaves the Nation of Islam and he founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity and Muslim Mosque, Inc.

In 1965, he was assassinated by three groups of members in Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom theatre with 21 gunshots in his body.

Rare British WW1 Propaganda Posters

The painting is dated 1916, two years after the events it depicts. Kaiser Wilhelm, on horseback with the Angel of Death at his shoulder, turns aside from leading his troops into further action. The response of the man on the ground is defiant but emasculated and Christ, too, is neutered, limited to the role of offering succour. In the background, the Belgian town of Louvain burns. The work shows no obvious hero to resolve the chaos and destruction. Instead it calls out to the viewer to step forward, to take on the challenge of what looks like an Arthurian quest, and to defeat the foe. In this work Butler depicts the horrors of war, not as a pacifist statement but rather to encourage the recruitment of men to fight the evil of German aggression, personified in the Kaiser. Although this was neither a commissioned painting nor authorised in any respect, it carries a strongly populist message about the war. It is part of a body of work that described German atrocities with an almost pornographic relish, both in attempting to motivate people to resist aggression, and to justify the Allied war effort.
