One of the volunteers involved in the clinical trial of the vaccine prepared by AstraZeneca and Oxford University for Covid-19 has died, Brazil's Anvisa health service announced.
The agency did not specify the volunteer's nationality. However, according to the University of Sao Paulo, which helps coordinate the third phase of the clinical trial, he was Brazilian.
The death report does not specify under what circumstances and from what complications the person involved in the vaccine investigation concluded.
Trials of AstraZeneca Plc's vaccine for Covid-19 disease are expected to resume in the U.S. even later this week, after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) completed its investigation into the serious disease experienced by one of the participants, four sources told Reuters.
The large trial of the vaccine in the US has been discontinued since September 6, after one of the volunteers reportedly developed a rare disease, an inflammation of the spinal cord called transverse myelitis.
The sources, who asked not to be named, told the agency they were informed the test could resume this week. The FDA did not respond to a request for comment on this development. It is unclear how the FDA will classify the disease.
