UNRULY BEHAVIOURS LED TO THE SPREAD OF THE VIRUS

 Filenews 16 October 2020

"The behaviours of individuals, who, while positively detected in the virus, did not comply with the instructions of the experts, led to the spread of the virus," stressed the Head of the Tracing Team, epidemiologist, Dr. Valentine Silvestros.

Speaking to Active and the "Agenda" show, Dr. Silvestros pointed out that "in cases where people tested positive for the virus, they resisted, questioned the results and the instructions we gave them, they wanted to get out. It is these attitudes that have brought us to the point where we are now."

"From a tracking point of view we did everything we could to identify the incidents. From then on, the task of tracing becomes much more difficult. What we have done so far, namely to inform positive people about the virus on the same day, is very difficult to do," dr. Silvestros.

He stressed that everyone should take care of themselves and if they show symptoms they should be confined to the home.

"We're seeing a lot of dispersion in families, groups, workplaces, which means," dr. Silvestros, "to the fact that the health protocols are not respected".

Dr. Silvestros even predicted that things will be worse in the coming days, since there are several symptomatic ones that are easier to transmit the virus.

"Anyone who sees someone in their environment with symptoms should avoid them, as they would with other cases of disease," dr. Silvestros.

Asked about the ages of people who tested positive for the virus, he said that more than 60% of people identified in recent days are under 40 and around 20% are children and students. "This can cause a large dispersion in the community, as young people have a more intense social life and by extension many contacts," he noted afterwards.

Asked about the geographical origin of the incidents, he noted that "this week most cases have been detected in Limassol, last week they were in Larnaca, but we are a small island and the virus needs to be treated as a whole".

"We're talking about horizontal transmission, it's not locally focused," dr. Silvestros.

Dr. Silvestros sounded the alarm, calling the island into discipline.

"Immature behaviours cause harm," dr. Silvestros, noting that "it is necessary to stem the spread of the virus in the community".
