Questions are being raised in the north regarding security measures at coronavirus quarantine facilities after it emerged that a young woman killed in a car accident last Sunday had managed to leave one such hotel just two days after checking in.
Mother of two, Fatma Kasikci, 24, a UK resident, had arrived to the north last Friday and was required to remain in quarantine for seven days under measures against the spread of coronavirus.
Two days later, however, she died in a traffic accident on the Nicosia-Famagusta motorway in the north. She was reportedly the driver. A 23-year-old man, who was a passenger in the car, was injured.
‘Health minister’ Ali Pilli confirmed the young woman had ‘escaped’ the hotel she was taken to spend her seven-day quarantine.
The revelation has prompted questions on the effectiveness of security measures at the quarantine hotels.
Pilli said a probe has been launched into the case concerning the hotel and those in charge.
He said his ‘ministry’ was responsible for the health of the people in quarantine hotels, while the responsibility for security lies with the facility owners, the police, and the ‘ministries’ of public works and finance.
But Kasikci’s mother also raised another issue, that of proper implementation of regulations in general in the north.
Speaking to Turkish daily Hurriyet, the woman said she would travel to Cyprus to file a lawsuit.
The woman reportedly said that a young man living in Famagusta had visited her daughter at the hotel, stayed with her illegally for two days, and the two had then left the hotel in a car.
“My daughter has not driven a vehicle until this time. She has no licence. Who let a person in quarantine go out?” she asked.
She added that the man told her daughter he was drunk and asked her to drive the vehicle to Famagusta.
“He also did not have a licence. Why is a vehicle given to a person without a licence? Who owns this car? ” she asked, according to the daily.
