REUTERS - TURKEY LAUNCHES S-400 MISSILE INTO BLACK SEA

 Filenews 16 October 2020

A missile from the S-400 anti-aircraft system was fired by the Turkish armed forces in the Area of Turkey's Black Sea coast, where they were already expected to test the Russian defence mechanism, Reuters reports, citing a video from the time of launch.

The video, from the coastal city of Sinopi, captures a narrow strip of smoke heading towards the sky. In recent days, Turkey had issued warnings that limited movement in air and water in the Black Sea in order to conduct launch tests.

The S-400 test, if confirmed, could lead to tension between Turkey and the US, with the latter strongly opposed to Ankara's purchase of this Russian weapons system, as they see it as endangering NATO's defence systems.

Turkey's Defence Ministry notes that it does not confirm or deny the launch, Reuters reports.

Washington had reacted to the purchase of the S-400s by excluding Turkey from the F-35 aircraft program, and had also threatened sanctions.

Last week, two US federal senators had again called on the country's president Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Turkey over the S-400 issue.
