RESEARCH - CORONAVIRUS REMAINS ACTIVE ON HUMAN SKIN FOR 9 HOURS

 Filenews 18 October 2020

The coronavirus remains active on human skin for nine hours, Japanese researchers found, which according to them shows the need for frequent hand washing to tackle the pandemic.

In contrast, the flu-causing pathogen survives on human skin for about 1.8 hours, adds the study published this month in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.

"Survival for 9 hours of SARS-CoV-2 (the strain of the virus causing COVID-19) on human skin may increase the risk of transmission by contact compared to IAV (influenza A virus), thus accelerating the pandemic," it states. Scientists conducted a survey on a skin sample taken from a necropsy of covid-19 victims, about a day after their deaths.

Both the coronavirus and the flu virus are fortunately inactivated within 15 seconds when ethanol is applied to the skin, which is contained in hand antiseptics.

"Longer survival of SARS-CoV-2 on the skin increases the risk of transmission of the virus through contact, hand hygiene can reduce this risk," the study concludes.

The study supports The World Health Organization's guidelines for regular and meticulous hand washing to curb transmission of the virus, which has infected nearly 40 million people worldwide since it first appeared in China at the end of last year.
