Important and serious conclusions, with regard to road safety and our behaviour on the road, are drawn from the results of traffic checks over the last three days. In just 60 hours, from last Friday evening until this morning, a total of 1798 complaints were made about various traffic offences. In fact, a large number of these complaints relate to serious traffic offences, which are proven to be the main causes of fatal and serious traffic collisions.
In particular, during the three-day period, a total of 884 drivers were found to be driving at excessive speed and reported. There were also 184 alcohol tests, of which 23 drivers were positive and reported for driving under the influence of alcohol, while two others were positive for a drug test. Another 889 drivers were charged with other offences.
Eight vehicles were identified and seized from police checks. It is a car, four motorcycles and three mopeds, which had undergone mechanical modifications.
In addition to the above complaints, a total of 39 written warnings were issued to drivers who were found to be committing minor traffic offences. At the same time, the members of the Police offered assistance to 64 drivers, who had problems with their vehicle, on the road network.
Police checks throughout the road network, highways, long-city and urban roads continue daily. The purpose of these checks is to ensure that all road users have a proper road awareness and that serious and fatal road collisions on our roads are reduced as much as possible.
