BEIRUT - CYPRUS MISSION TO START OPERATIONS ON FRIDAY

in-cyprus 6 August 2020 - by Maria Bitar

The men of the Catastrophe Response Special Unit (EMAK) and the Police Emergency Response Unit (MMAD) as well as the tracking dogs who arrived in Beirut on Wednesday with two police helicopters are ready to start the ground operations.

The rescue forces’ members were temporarily benched upon arrival pending their tests for corona virus coming back negative in order to join in the search for the injured and the missing.

Speaking on Omega’s “Information Now” show, Fire Department spokesman Andreas Kettis said the head of the mission has visited the site of the blasts, which killed dozens, injured 5,000 plus people and displaced approximately 300,000 from their homes.

At present, the Lebanese authorities are conducting a ground assessment to identify areas of search and rescue, and possibly from tomorrow, the Cypriot mission will be able to start operations.
