Reaching crunch on ball

Sit on a Swiss ball placing your feet shoulder-width apart on the floor. Lean back on the ball so that your back is parallel to the floor. Raise your arms, pointing them in the direction of the ceiling. Now contract your abs as you would in normal crunches exercises, keeping your arms reaching for the ceiling. Hold the position for three seconds. Now regain the initial position. Do 10 reps of this exercise.

Leg raise
Lie down on the floor with your legs up in the air, making a 90 degree angle with the floor. Lift your hips slightly off the floor by contracting your lower abs. Hold this position for three seconds. Lower your hips. Straighten your back and bring your legs in alignment with the rest of your body. Rest for three seconds and start again. Do 3 reps.

V-ups

Lie on your back with your arms overhead, keeping your legs straight. Lift your chest and legs simultaneously to bring your body in a V-shape position. Lower down gently and repeat. Keep your legs straight and together during this exercise.

Long knives

Lie down on a mat with your arms extended above your body. Lift both your arms and legs at the same time, trying to touch your feet with the fingers. Keep your legs perpendicular to the floor. Do at least 10 reps.

These exercises are great for starting an abs workout regime. To stay in shape, you should train your muscles hard enough. Our hardcore designed ab workouts will help you flaunt abs of steel!

Ozicab ismi nereden geliyor?

Swimming for Fitness

A guy named Dr. Stephen Blair (University of South Carolina) conducted an extended survey to study the effectiveness of swimming for fitness. What he found was remarkable. The study was conducted over a period of years, and measured the health benefits of more than forty thousand study participants, ranging in ages from twenty-nine to ninety. His conclusion was that swimming is hands down the best form of exercise you can undertake, beating out perennial favorites jogging and walking. In fact, the study concludes that if you incorporate swimming as the major form of exercise, you're a staggering fifty percent less likely to die.

Fifty percent. That's huge, and the implications of the study are equally enormous, which of course means that if you don't have, or have access to an exercise poor or swimming spa, then you should seriously consider it, if you're interested in optimal health.

In a series of different studies done, it has also been found that swimming is one of the better forms of exercise you can undertake if you suffer from Fibromyalgia which is a fairly common condition in which a person suffers from pain and tenderness in muscles, tendons and joints, and has been linked to chronic headaches, sleep problems, and general fatigue. It has also been shown that for women who are trying to get pregnant, regular moderate exercise can actually increase the chances of conception (though the same study notes that intense exercise, say, marathon training or the like, can actually decrease the chances of conception, so moderation is very definitely the key word here).

Swim spas can be hugely expensive (some of the high end models can run upwards of forty thousand bucks, before counting installation fees, possible landscaping changes to your property, and ongoing maintenance), and as such, getting one may be out of reach for many people, however, given the health benefits mentioned above, if it's something you can afford, then it really is an excellent option, not only in that it helps foster better health and a longer life, but also in that it's an excellent addition to your home, that will enhance the value of your property long term, so if you decide to sell your place at some point, you'll find that your home fetches a premium for the addition of the swim spa.

Diva Dash: Race Recap

Last weekend I ran the Diva Dash 5k in Kansas City, KS. It was a pretty nice day with approximately 50 degree weather and pretty strong winds. I was wearing pants, a short sleeved shirt and a long sleeved shirt. Once again, I was overdressed. I did not carry water. I finally got a chance to use my iFitness belt and my Chica Band!

Pre-race excitement
Mile 1: 7:00/mi
I made sure to try and get in the beginning of the pack. I knew this race was a run/walk and the last time I did one of these, I did not get in the front, and ended up having to pass a lot of the walkers, who for some reason were in the beginning of the pack. My first mile is always the fastest. I think the combination of trying to pass people and thinking that maybe I will slow down later gives me the energy to push it for the first 10 minutes, or whatever it takes. So the first few minutes were spent passing people and then the pace evened out a bit. I think at this point I had maybe 20 people in front of me.

Mile 2: 7:02/mi

I spent this mile trying to pass as many people as I could. I probably passed 6-8 girls in the 2nd mile. This course was variable with a few ups and downs and I noticed that I can usually pass people on hills, when they typically slow down. I guess that hill training pays off! I was pushing pretty hard and my legs were getting pretty tired, but I was pushed on my the fact that on the straight stretches I could see the front of the pack and they were not too far ahead of me.

Mile 3: 7:03/mi

This mile was a little bit of a downhill and then pretty much a slow steady uphill to the end. At this point the wind was blowing right toward me, hard. I passed a few more girls and was neck in neck with a small girl in black. I passed her, but the wind was really taking the energy out of me. Then I noticed she was drafting me! I could see her in my shadow, trying to keep behind me to stay out of the wind. I swerved. I wasn't about to help her, not when I could still see the leaders just ahead of me. I couldn't tell at this time if there were 2 or 3 or 4 of them, but they were right there!

Mile 3.1: 7:06/mi

The wind got me. The slight uphill got me. The girl behind me passed me. I crossed the line without an ounce of energy left. I felt like throwing up, but instead drank a bottle of water in one gulp and then had a banana.

Results:
Chip Time: 21:36
Garmin Time: 21:49 (7:02/mi) I always forget to stop it right away!
5/1130 overall
2/239 age group**

I won this. What the heck am I going to do with it?
Notes: I really wish I would have pushed harder and not let that girl pass me at the very end. I think she was in my age group, so if I would have pushed a little harder, I could have placed first in my group. I probably should have worn less clothing because I was sweating pretty hard by the end. I am proud of myself though. **I placed, I got a new PR and I ran my fastest mile ever.

After that, I ran (slowly) back along the course, to meet my friend who was walking, so I could walk with her to the finish line. She finished in about 45 minutes which is a new PR for her as well! I am really glad she could join me; it's always nice to have a friend at any race!
_____

Next up: Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in Washington DC this Sunday!! The weekend after that, I have my fourth 12 in 2012 race: The Grizzly Peak Trail Half in Berkeley!
_____

Don't forget to go over to Jill's and check out the other Fitness Friday posts!

Have you ever ran a race with a friend? How do you feel about drafting? Have you perfected the race day outfit yet?

The Best Way To Get A Six Pack Fast

The good news about six pack abs is that we already have them, they just can't be seen. When we work out to get a six pack, there are several common mistakes made that can be devastating to the effectiveness of your work out. Contrary to popular belief, merely doing sit ups will not get you the stomach you want. There are many more decisive factors that determine whether or not you can achieve the stomach you want. In this article I'm going to share with you the best way to get a six pack fast.

When you work out to get a six pack, make sure that you are on what I refer to as a "six pack abs diet". This entails doing your best not to eat more calories than you burn and drinking plenty of water. Consume lean meats and do not touch any junk food whatsoever. Achieving tone and definition from your six pack work out routine requires enough stamina to push out the repetitions you need. Always take a day to rest and switch up your work out every week. Purchasing a swiss ball or even a machine that targets your core can also provide drastic improvement toward your results. There are also many guided work out systems you can find with a bit of searching on the internet. If you ever feel uncomfortable tension in your back or neck during a work out, stop immediately. Consult a physician in order to ensure the work out you have chosen is safe for you.

Another way to target your abs is to simply run. This is good not only for your entire core, but also for your cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Oxygen intake and blood flow levels are at their peak when your heart and lungs are in good shape, allowing for more of those repetitions we discussed previously. Getting the endurance you need is a necessity in completing the work out routines that lie ahead.

Sticking to routine is the biggest key to success in your six pack abs work out. So grab a planner or even use a calendar to schedule your work outs. This will also provide you with a log which allows you to look back and see how far you have come along. Only those willing to put forth the effort will see the results. You would be surprised at what these simple, quick and easy six pack shortcuts can do when it comes to getting the body you want.

How To Lose Your Man Boobs - Include Cardio As Part Of A Successful Strategy

You're determined to get rid of your man boobs. During your workouts, you're religiously training your chest muscles with bench presses, dumbbell flys, pec-deck flys and cable crossovers.

Nothing wrong with that; it's great that you have decided to take action and are working hard in the gym to remedy the situation. Increasing pectoral muscle mass, however, is only part of the solution; to truly obliterate man boobs, you will also have to do some cardiovascular/aerobic exercises.

If you're consistent with your weight training, you will build some good strength and muscle in your chest area. But to some extent, your pecs may still be covered with layers of fat.Combine some cardio exercise into your workouts - so you burn off the unwanted fat layers and finally see the underlying muscle definition you've worked hard to get.

OK - so what cardio exercises should you go for?

If you already have a good basic fitness level, then running is a great way to burn calories. It is one of the most demanding exercises for your heart and lungs - so you will definitely be working your cardiovascular system.

Running is high-impact; if you have concerns about injuring knees, shins, calves, ankles and feet- you can minimize the risk by doing low-impact cardio exercises.

Low-impact cardio exercises:

  • Swimming
  • Cycling - either outdoors or on a stationary bike
  • Rowing using a seated rowing machine
  • Stepping on the step machine
  • Strides using the elliptical machine
  • Another factor to consider, is how intense you will do the exercises. There are two ways to approach your cardio training: low-intensity and high-intensity.

Low-intensity cardio is performed at a slower pace for longer periods; ideal for those who are lacking in aerobic fitness. Typically you will exercise at 20-40% of your maximum effort level. Most of the energy used during the exercise will come from body-fat stores, however, the 'rate' of fat-burning will be at the lower end of calorie-burning scale.

High-intensity cardio will have the effect of elevating your body's ability to burn fat - which is exactly what you need to reduce man boobs. Only attempt it if you feel ready to cope with the physical demands it will place on your CV system. Typically you will exercise in the 60-90% of your maximum effort level but for shorter duration.

Interval training is another method, where you perform at low and high intensity, giving your body time to recover before exploding to near-maximum effort. For your chosen exercise, perform it by mixing longer periods at low intensity with short periods (10-20 seconds) at near 100% effort level. Over a 10-15 minute period, you will expend more calories than if you exercised at low intensity for 20-30 minutes.

By doing high-intensity interval training as part of an overall workout plan, you will affect the body's metabolism, so that while at rest, you will still be burning calories - perfect for getting rid of unwanted chest fat.
