CHECK THE SIM CARD IN YOUR INTRUDER ALARM ON A MONTHLY BASIS

Information provided by the Police - given the number of burglaries on the island generally, it is always useful to check that your intruder alarm is operating correctly.  Advice has been given in the past regarding batteries, but this time the advice is regarding SIM cards.  Police have also added that it is worth carrying out a monthly check on your SIM card to ensure it is functioning correctly and that renewal has not been overlooked.

If your alarm system sends out alarm activations or alerts via GSM SIM card, please take some time to ensure that your SIM card is working correctly. If it is not, then you will not receive a text message should your premises fall victim to burglars.

In the case of a SIM 'pay as you go', this must be topped up with €10 of credit every year. If it does not get topped up, the card will be disconnected - and the first you will know about it will be when you do not get an alert text message in the event of a breakin.

If you have an annual contract SIM card, as long as you, or your alarm company, pays the SIM card bill annually or monthly, the SIM card will never be disconnected and will always work.

There have been instances recently where it was thought that the alarm had not worked correctly. However, it was found that the problem lay with the SIM card.   Despite being on an annual contract with an alarm company, some SIM cards had been deactivated - most likely because of non-payment of monthly accounts either by the homeowner or the alarm company - the system, therefore, was unable to send text messages to alert the homeowner and/or alarm company.

TO CHECK YOUR SIM CARD IS FUNCTIONING:

Set off the alarm. Let it ring for about 30 seconds to give the SIM card chance to send out the text messages to the numbers stored in the system.  If you do not receive a message, then it is likely that the SIM has been deactivated.

You can also call the alarm SIM card number. It will ring if it is working. If it has been deactivated you will get a Cypriot voice message, followed in English, stating the number is not active.

It is recommended that a regular monthly test is carried out so that you ensure your system operates correctly in the event of a breakin or attempt thereat.

POLICE OUT TO CATCH PHONE & TRAFFIC LIGHT VIOLATORS

From inCyprus 1/8/2017

Police out to catch phone and traffic light violators

“This week’s clampdown – which got underway on Monday – will be specifically targeting motorists illegally using their phones whilst driving and those motorists violating traffic light regulations.”
“Traffic police will be out in numbers not only on motorways and main roads but also in the mountain areas. We once again call on motorists to abide by the rules of the road and to not speed, wear seatbelts, not to do dangerous overtaking and to be patient. We can all help to reduce the number of road deaths.”
It’s illegal to use your phone while driving or riding a motorcycle unless you have hands-free access, such as a bluetooth headset, voice command or a dashboard holder.
The law still applies to you if you’re stopped at traffic lights, queuing in traffic or supervising a learner driver.
“The slightest distraction can be fatal,” continued Papaelia “Motorists have to be 100% focused on driving.”
Police officers will also be monitoring traffic lights this week following complaints of motorists running red lights – especially late at night or in the early hours of the morning.
“Again, violating a red light can be fatal. It is not clever to violate a red light and can have tragic consequence. Motorists are also advised to slow down at traffic lights even if the light is green.”
Papaelias also called on motorists involved in traffic accidents to make sure that they not only get out of the road but also stand behind railings if there are any to ensure that they remain safe.
“We had the recent incident in Kokkinotrimithia (where a woman in a traffic accident was killed after being struck by another vehicle after she got out of her car to inspect the damage) and we do not want a repeat of this tragedy.”

Looking Back: July

“Warm, mellow summer. The glowing sunbeams make every nerve tingle. The new needles of the pines and fir are nearly full grown and shine gloriously.”  - John Muir

Running: I had a couple of pretty substantial weeks of running, bringing the total in July to 238 miles and about 40,800 feet of climbing. In addition, I am finally getting back on the bike, and logged about 65 miles this month. Last month, I also did about 20 miles. My goal was to ride to work once a week, which is about 5 miles. However, for the first half of the year, I basically did not ride at all. So now I have to maintain an average of about 10 miles per week or 40 miles a month, which I am on track to do if I keep it up!

I have also been doing yoga 1 - 2 times per week (this one). The yoga and the biking are definitely making my legs more heavy when I run, but I think that's mostly because this is the first month of doing all of it together. Hopefully my body will get accustomed to all the different activities and it will be stronger rather than more tired!

Reading: In July, I did a lot of driving and quite a few solo runs and bike rides. What this ended up translating to was more "reading" in the form of audiobooks! I read a total of 11 books, 5 of which were audiobooks (in italics). There were some pretty good ones. I have listed them below in order of preference (with books from my own shelf in bold). I have noticed one thing: my liking an audiobook can depend a lot on whether or not I like the narrator, which isn't really fair to the author. Also, I tend to not pay as much attention when I am listening to a book versus reading it myself, especially since usually I am driving or doing something else at the same time rather than focusing only on the book. However, it is a great way to get two times as many books read!

Travel: What a great month! I actually had a couple of weekends at home, which is very odd for a July, but I am not complaining! I got to finally do some things around the house, as well as prepping for my next trip, which is in August. However, I did spend some time in Oregon, as I always do in July, and I also went on a camping trip to Mammoth, which was a little different than expected due to the heavy amount of snow in the Sierras this year. Let's just say that running was superseded by slip-sliding, hiking and route finding and the camp site that we wanted was still located on a closed road. It was still a lot of fun and the high Sierras were beautiful covered in snow and ice.

Etc.: So far in the garden there are some ripe tomatoes and a few cucumbers, but I think that a rat is eating my zucchini as I keep finding chewed nubs. Darn it, varmit. So I am just starting to be able to have tomato salads and to have a once in a while cucumber snack. I also had some potatoes that were sprouting eyes, so I planted them last week for a "fall planting." We shall see if they take! And the corn is growing! No ears yet, but it's getting taller!

Where did you go in July? What is your favorite summer read so far? Do you have anything fun planned for the rest of the summer?
