IMMOVABLE PROPERTY TAX

Bills for this tax will be issued by the Government department in September.   Please note that after a lot of discussion, the tax will continue to be charged based on the 1980 valuations.   The tax will be the same as last year WITH A DEDUCTION SO THAT ONLY 25% WILL BE PAID PROVIDING PAYMENT IS MADE BY 31^st OCTOBER.    As previously, payment can be made online on JCC Smart.

Those choosing to pay between 1^st November and 31 December will pay 27.5% of the 2015 tax and those who pay after 31^stDecember will face a 10% levy on the 27.5% figure.

Tax bills up to €10 will be waived. Tax bills received will show the same amount of tax as was paid last year.  However, when payment is made the amount will be discounted in line with the amounts quoted above.  The tax is likely to be cancelled in 2017.

LOCAL IMMOVABLE PROPERTY TAX

Despite the intention to merge this tax with the Government Immovable Property Tax, the Government have belatedly advised that they will now continue taxation based on the current criteria [ie 1980 property values], and this tax will be payable, as in previous years, to the local Council.  

This tax is payable once you have your title deeds.   Demand notices are not issued and it is the responsibility of every property owner to settle their accounts.   Please note that payment must be made before 18^th December to avoid payment of a 25% penalty.   Those who, through choice or necessity, have yet to have their house value included on their title deeds, only pay on the value of the land they hold title to.

If you have only acquired your title deeds this year, please take your title deeds into the Council office when you go to pay this tax.  As with the Government Immovable Property Tax, this tax is likely to be cancelled in 2017.

RATES

The amount payable for rates for 2016 will be the same as last year but without the additional €20 for the cemetery.   Notices have recently been issued.

WATER

The transfers from the Monastery and Leptos took place from 1^st July.   For Tala supplied water, please bear in mind that your consumption will now be invoiced every 3 months and you should, therefore, exercise some caution, in case your consumption pushes you into a higher pricing bracket.   For those users affected, if you wish to continue payment by bank transfer, could you please note the following:

Please call into Tala Council office with a note of your bank details and IBAN number to allow payment by bank transfer.   You will also need to cancel your previous transfer to the Monastery or Leptos once your final payment for water consumed up until 30 June has been collected.

Those who are unable to visit the council office in person, can email the Council office to set up the bank transfer on a permanent basis.   It is important please that all the information stipulated is submitted, together with the wording granting permission.

COMMUNITY/NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Following on from the Police presentation, security information and any security updates can be found by going to the right hand corner ‘Categories’ and clicking on Security on www.talanews.blogspot.com.

Everyone is encouraged to sign up for the Neighbourhood Watch scheme.   This does not commit you to forming committees or patrols, but is an agreement to be the eyes and ears of the Police and report any suspicious activity or vehicles to them.   We have an undertaking from the Police to carry out regular vehicular patrols of the Tala area.   To maintain this service, as a community we need to show support to the Police and this can be done by signing up to the Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

To sign up you can either email your name, address, mobile number and email address to Cathi on toffee@primehome.comor call into the council office and provide this information to the staff there.  For the time being any security alerts will be by email.

On www.talanews.blogspot.comunder Security there is a Get to Know Your Neighbour form.  This is available in English, Greek, Russian and Chinese.  If you are unable to print the form[s] from the blog, please email Cathi and she will send you the documents.   It is felt that by getting to know your neighbour, this will help make more people aware of the neighbourhood watch scheme, enable people to notice strangers in the area, or suspicious activity and thus reduce the number of thefts.  

 

There are also A5 stickers available for those who have signed up to the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme.  These can be obtained at Tala Council office at a cost of €1 for two stickers.   Proceeds will go to charity.

Suspicious activity should please be reported to the Police on 122.   Thereafter, it would be helpful if you could  let Cathi know what has happened by sending her a short email so she can liaise with the Police and/or alert the community if needed.

CPR TRAINING

If you are interested in a free CPR training course, provided by the staff of Phoenix Ambulance Services, could you please email Cathi on toffee@primehome.com to register your interest.  When emailing please advise whether your need is for a refresher course, or if such training would be new to you.   Please email by 30 September as the course will hopefully run during the month of October, when it is a little cooler, depending on the interest shown.

LOCAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS – December

At the time of going to press, no final decision has been made as to whether the local elections will proceed in December.

As the cut off date for applications for a vote in these elections is the 30 September, if you wish to apply for a vote please contact Cathi at toffee@primehome.com with a note of your address and she will send you the relevant form for completion.

If you already have a voting book, please note that no action is required.

CYPRUS SPORTS ORGANISATION – GENTLE EXERCISE CLASSES AT WELFARE CENTRE

Please note that exercise classes for seniors will resume at the Welfare Centre on 27 September.  Classes will be on a Tuesday and Friday morning, 1045 to 1130.   Fee for classes until the end of December for those aged 63 and above will be €15 in total.  Registration is essential.  Forms are available at the Council Office.

Sami Hamidi Kimdir?

Sami Hamidi 1990 yılında KKTC/Lefkoşa'da doğmuştur. Profesyonel olarak vücut geliştirme sporu ile uğraşmaktadır. Spor ile küçük yaşlarda tanışan Sami, basketbol ve tekvando sporu ile yakından ilgilenmiştir. What a Profile!

The latest edition to my little library

Sometimes even a non-collector likes to have more than one copy of a very special book. I put Profile by Gaslight in that category. I picked up my second at an antiques mall in Columbia, PA, during a recent vacation.  

Edited by Edgar W. Smith and subtitled An Irregular Reader About the Private Life of Sherlock Holmes, this cornerstone book is a stellar collection of essays from the early days of Sherlockian scholarship. How early is indicated by the annotated bibliography, which runs a mere six pages -- including all the books of the Canon. That's just about all there was in those days.

The list of contributors to the volume is dazzling roll call of Sherlockian giants: Morley, Davis, Stout, Wolff, Woolcott, Sayers, Boucher, Starrett, Haycraft, Pratt, Bell . . . Even some of the individual articles and poems are justly famous, such as “Watson Was a Woman,” “That Was No Lady,” “221B,” and “Dr. Watson's Christian Name.”

The front carries a notice: “The characters in this book are real persons. Any resemblance to fictional characters, living or dead, is purely accidental.”  If this isn't the first Sherlockian book to make that claim, it is one of the first and far from the last.

The volume already sitting on my library shelves has a dust jacket, and my new acquisition doesn’t. But the new one is slightly larger in its physical dimensions and has something the other lacks – end papers featuring maps of the Sherlockian world by Dr. Julian Woolf. That probably means it was the original edition, and the other a cheaper reprint.

As another Wolfe, Nero, would say: “Most satisfactory.”

[EYLUL/2016] Grazia Korea - Suga Röportajı

S: Yorgun görünüyorsun.

C: Beijing konserinden yeni döndüğüm için. Sabahın 5’ine kadar müziğim üzerine çalışıyordum ve biraz kestirip buraya geldim.

S: Son zamanlarda meşgul olmalısın.

C: Asya turundayım. Yakında mixtape’im çıkacak. Konserden sonra müzik yapacağım. Kore’ye döndükten sonra da müzikle uğraşacağım. Konser harici yaptığım tek şey müzik.

S: Yurtdışındayken nasıl müzik yapıyorsun?

C: Otel odasında müzik yapabileyim diye müzik aletlerimi de yanıma alıyorum.

S: Mixtape’inde ne kadar müzik var?

C: 10 parça olacak, düeti henüz yapmadığım için bundan yüzde yüz emin olduğumu söyleyemem.

S: Mixtapeler’ini Suga olarak yayımlamayacak mısın peki?

C: Hayır. Agust D olarak yayımlayacağım. Memleketim Daegu’ya karşılık, DT Suga anlamına geliyor bu takma ad. Anlamını seviyorum ve kulağa mükemmel geliyor. Sanırım BTS ile çalışmazken bu  ismi kullanıyor olacağım. Mixtape  Ağustos’ta yayımlanacağı için, bunun iyi bir rastlantıya dönüşeceğine dair içimde bir his var (gülüşmeler).

S: Mixtape’inin ne tür bir havası olacak?

C: Temel olarak, Hip Hop olacak. Kulağa BTS’in şarkılarından farklı gelecek.Yapmak istediğim her şeyi yaptım. Big Hit kiminle çalıştığıma ve kimle düet yaptığıma karışmadı. Halktan veya müzik listelerindeki sıramdan endişe duymak zorunda da değilim.

S: Şarkı sözlerin nasıldı?

C: Sözleri yazarken, “Hah? Böyle mi hissediyorum gerçekten? Bunu cidden yazabilir miyim?” gibiydim. Ama aklımda olanları yazdığım için daha iyi hissettim.

S: Bunları resmi birer şarkı olarak yayınlamaktansa, mixtape olarak yayınlamayı neden tercih ettin?

C: Eğer resmi şarkılar olsalardı, bazı sınırlamalar da olacaktı. Müzik listeleri hakkında bir yük altına girmiş gibi hissedecektim. Şarkıları yaptığımdan beri, sadece bu şarkıları duymak isteyenlerin dinlemesini istiyorum. Dinlemek istemeyenler 30 saniyeden daha fazlasını dinlemezler. Kısacası, bu şarkılarla promosyon yapıp insanlara dinlemeleri için yalvarmama gerek yoktu. Bedavaya yayımlamamın nedeni bu.

S: Genelde nelere ilgi duyarsın?

C: Hayaller, gençlik ve gerçeklik hakkında konuşmayı severim. Toplum bu aralar 20’li yaşlardaki insanlara karşı haşin davranıyor. Öğrencileri sıkı çalışmaya zorluyorlar. Toplumda bir ‘başarı’ klişesi var. Bireylerin kendilerine ait bireysel hayalleri olması çok zor. İnsanın 20’lerindeyken bile bireysel bir hayale sahip olması kolay değil. ‘Npo’ jenerasyonu olarak (ÇN: Vazgeçmeleri gereken çok şey olduğu için sefalet içinde yaşayan jenerasyonu kast ediyor.) insanlar çaresiz kalıyor çünkü geleceği göremiyorlar. Işığı görseler, ona doğru ilerleyebilirler. Oysa onlar kendilerine rehberlik edecek herhangi bir ışık göremedikleri için çaresizliğe düşüyorlar. Müziğimle onları rahatlatmak istememin nedeni bu.

S: Vay, yaşına nazaran çok olgunsun. Müzik üzerinde çalışmaya erken başladığın için olabilir mi bu?

C: Sanırım MIDI ile bilgisayarımda çalışmaya ilk başladığımda 13’tüm. İlk şarkı sözü yazdığım zaman da 13 yaşındaydım. Sonra Daegu’da bir müzik stüdyosunda çalışmaya başlamıştım.

S: Part time olarak mı?

C: Evet. Gençtim, müzik üzerine çalıştım demek yerine sadece çalıştım demem daha doğru olur. Ama  beste yapmayı ve düzenlemeyi böyle öğrendim. Bazıları underground rapçisi olarak müzik yaptığımı söyler, ama sadece Daegu’da müzik yaptığımı söylemek daha doğru olur. Stüdyoda çalışırken, yaptığım beat’leri sattım, ve sonunda rap yapmaya başladım.

S: Ne kadar kazandın o zamanlar?

C: Hiç kazanamadım.

S: Ne? Part time işin sanmıştım.

C: Müzik alanında işler böyle yürüyor. Bu iş yoluyla kazandığım küçük miktarı toplu taşımaya ve yemeğe ödemekle çok meşguldum.Stüdyo’nun yanında 2000 won’a erişte  satan küçük bir Jajjang dükkanı vardı ve bir yanda da 1000 won’a erişte saten başka bir dükkan var. Her zaman seçmekle başım dertteydi. 1000 won’a erişte  yersem, otobüsle eve gidebilirdim. 2000 won tutan Jajjang eriştesinden yesem, 2 saate eve yürüyerek gitmem gerekecekti. Zorlayıcı bir durumdu, ama o zamanlar müziğe olan tutkum sayesinde ayakta kaldım.

S: O zamanlar birlikte çalıştığın kişilerle hala iletişim içinde misin?

C:  Müzik yapmaktan vazgeçen pek çok kişi var. Bunun karşılığında, bana “Müziği seviyorum ama bunu yapmak için yeterince yetenekli olduğumu sanmıyorum.” diyen bir abi hip hop şirketi kurdu. Şuanda bir şirkette çalışan veya BBQ restorantı olan başka ağabeyler de var.

S: Müzikte yetenekli olduğunu düşünüyor musun?

C: Yetenek konusunda emin değilim ama müzik yaparken çok ciddileşirim. Günlük hayatımda fazla enerjik bir insan değilim fakat her şeyimi katmadan müzik yaparsam kendimi affetmem. Başladığınız işi layıkıyla bitirmeniz gerekir.

S: Birlikte çalışmak istediğin herhangi bir müzisyen var mı?

C: Kanye West. Liseye giderken, part time çalıştığım için Naksan Hiphop Festival’ine bilet kazanmıştım. O zamanlar, Kanye West ana artistti ve şok olduğum o anı hala unutamıyorum. ‘Power’ı sergilediği zamandı. Diğer gördüğüm performanslardan tamamiyle farklıydı. Sıradan bir müzik değil de bir şaheserdi. O hakikaten de Kanye West. Daha ne diyebiliriz ki? Ne yapsa, trend olur.

S: Bir artist olarak amacın ne?

C: Çocukken, umut veren çok fazla şarkı dinlerdim. 13 yaşındayken neyin acısını çekiyordum bilmiyorum (gülüşmeler).  Ben de böyle umut veren şarkılar ortaya koymak istiyorum. İnsanların “Bu çocuk kalbe dokunan müzikler yapıyor.” dediğini duymak istiyorum.Tabi, bu hedef ulaşılması zor (gülüşmeler).

S: Öyleyse bir insan olarak hedefin nedir Min Yoongi?

C: İyi bir adam olmak. Ama nasıl bir insan herkese karşı iyi olabilir? Bu aşırı açgözlülük olurdu. Hiç değilse yalan söylemeyen dürüst bi adam olmak istiyorum. Şarkı sözlerim gibi yaşam sürmek istiyorum. Böylece ne kadar zaman geçerse geçsin, şarkı sözlerimle gurur duyabilirim.

S: Müzikten başka ilgi duyduğun bir şey var mı?

C: Moda, ama genelde müzik enstrümanlarına ilgi duyarım. Ekipmanlar hakkında eleştiriler okumanın yanı sıra yabancı dergilerden de çok okurum. Onlarda mikrofon, konvertör gibi Kore’de çok yaygın olmayan şeyler var. Yurt dışına ne zaman çıksak, bunlardan alıp döneriz.

S: Bu çok tahmin edilir değildi.

C: Stüdyo’da çalıştığımı söylemiştim. Şuanda, mix ve master kayıtları yapıyorum. İnsanlar “Niye tüm bunları kendine yapıyorsun?” diyorlar.  Eğlenmek ve enerji almak için yapıyorum.

S: Nedense, modaya ilgim var diyeceksin sandım.

C: Tabii ki modaya çok ilgim var. Önceleri, aşırı aksesuar takarak dışarı çıkmayı severdim. Ama şu an durum değişti. Şimdi ucuz ve basit bir tişört giysem bile havalı bir insan olmak istiyorum. Son zamanlarda basit görünüşlere özenme nedenim bu.

S: Rapçisin ama bir dövmen bile yok.

C: Küçükken, dövmem olsun isterdim. 20 yaşına gelince bu düşüncem tamamen gitti. Pharrell Williams’ın bile dövmelerini sildirdiğini fark ettim. Neden dövme yaptırmaya karar verdiğini bile bilmediğini söylemişti. Gelecekte yapmak istediğim şeyler var. Hayır işi yapmak istiyorum, ama bir dövmemin olması işleri kötü yönde etkileyebilir. Kendimi alıkoyma nedenim bu. (ÇN: Korelilerin tutucu bir millet olmasından kaynaklanan bir durummuş.)

S: Sadece bir dövme yaptıracak olsaydın, nerene yaptırırdın ve bu ne olurdu?

C: Ayak parmağıma küçük bir benek.

S: Ney?

C: Böylece kimse göremez. Ama bilmiyorum, gelecek yıl fikrimi değiştirip sırtıma büyük bir dövme yaptırırım belki (gülüşmeler).

S: Ne tür aksesuarları seversin?

C: Yüzük, saat, bileklik, kolye ve diğer her şey. Kısa bir süre önce, pahalı bir saat almak hayalimdi.

Erkeklerin dünyasında, pahalı bir saat kişinin başarısını göstermek için bir yoldur. Ama artık böyle düşünmüyorum. Eğer pahalı bir saatim olsa insanlar beni başarılı olarak görecek mi? Hayır, aksine tiksinti duyabilirler. Ne giydiğim ve ne yaptığımın başkaları üzerinde negatif etkileri olabileceğini farkettikten sonra tedbirli biri haline geldim.

S: Hayırseverlik işlerine ilgin var gibi.

C:  Medya zayıflığı ve sıskalığı, güzelliğin mutlak standardı olarak insanlara kabul ettirme konusunda bir yaygara yaratıyor. Ama dünyanın diğer bir ucunda, açlıktan ölen insanlar var. Bu şeylerin daha çok farkında olmamız gerekmez mi? Eğer ilham verici ve temiz bir insan olursam, insanların başlarını daha çok bu tür şeylere çevirmesine yardım olabilirim diye düşünüyorum.

S: Her zaman olmak istediğin kişinin ne kadarı olabildin?

C: Neredeyse %10’u? O kadar bile değil. Hala daha havalı bir insan olmaya ihtiyacım var.

Cold War 1958 - the Second Taiwan Crisis and a possible Nuclear War

Some of the more common known flash points of the Cold War in the United States are the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 and the Berlin Crisis of 1958, well known because they directly impacted the United States or involved a European nation.  However I was surprised to learn in 1958 there was another major Cold War flash point in Asia, specifically the Second Taiwan Straits Crisis.  Furthermore in some ways this particular crisis point appears to have been one of the closest ones to sparking an actual use of atomic weapons by the United States in a conventional conflict.

In 1958 Mao Zedong, China's leader, remained determined to bring the Republic of China, located on Taiwan island, under the control of the People's Republic of China.  Previously Mao had launched attacks on small islands controlled by Taiwan, usually through naval shelling, and in 1958 he made a second attempt to do so.  However in 1958 the United States was in a unique position to threaten excessive belligerence in response - in 1954 the United States and the Republic of China had signed a defensive agreement, binding the United States to come to the aid of Taiwan if attacked.  Furthermore in 1955 Eisenhower had persuaded Congress to pass the "Formosan Resolution" - an authorizing agreement allowing Eisenhower to use whatever force he deemed necessary to defend Taiwan without further consulting Congress.

Eisenhower initially responded to Mao's actions with traditional forces, deploying naval units to the Taiwan Straits and ordering protection of convoys bringing supplies to Taiwan.  However the Soviet Union, wanting to avoid an actual conflict between the United States and China, sent diplomats to negotiate a settlement to the crisis.  They were horrified to find that Mao, and other top Communist Chinese leaders, were ready for a conflict with the United States and appeared ready to accept possible nuclear weapons attacks against China.  Eisenhower, in turn, had accepted defending Taiwan from Communist China would require the use of nuclear weapons and had accepted a United States military plan to use nuclear weapons if needed.  Eisenhower even authorized deploying additional nuclear weapons to the region to ensure if they were required they were ready for immediate deployment.

Nikita Khrushchev, leader of the Soviet Union, added to the crisis further on 19 September 1958 when he sent a letter to Eisenhower stating that the Soviet Union had "nuclear and hydrogen bombs as well" and strongly implying if China was attacked, the Soviet Union would respond.  The United States at this time though had a massive strategic lead in atomic weapons, in both number and delivery capacity over the Soviet Union, and Eisenhower and the United States military were comfortable with this risk.  Eisenhower kept the nuclear forces in Taiwan and refused to back down.

The crisis was ultimately defused by Mao backing down and simply allowing the situation to deescalate.  Communist and Republic Chinese forces ended up exchanging shells with each other, filled with propaganda, on alternating days for several months.  Communist China kept up its shelling of propaganda shells until 1979 due to this confrontation.

What was surprising to me though was this crisis seemed MUCH more likely to lead to the use of nuclear weapons, Eisenhower and the United States Congress were comfortable with it, China was apparently fine with it, and the Soviet Union would probably have let the exchange take place.  Although the Cuban Missile Crisis was closer to an actual launch, this seems more terrifying because the participants seemed far more comfortable with it breaking loose than other crisis points in the Cold War.

Some of the more common known flash points of the Cold War in the United States are the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 and the Berlin Crisis of 1958, well known because they directly impacted the United States or involved a European nation.  However I was surprised to learn in 1958 there was another major Cold War flash point in Asia, specifically the Second Taiwan Straits Crisis.  Furthermore in some ways this particular crisis point appears to have been one of the closest ones to sparking an actual use of atomic weapons by the United States in a conventional conflict.

S: Doğum gününde ne yapmayı düşünüyorsun?

RM: Comeback için hazırlandığımızdan dolayı büyük ihtimalle pratik yapacağım ya da çalışacağım. Çok düşük bir ihtimal ama belki küçük bir tatile gidebilirim.

S: Doğum gününü kutlamanın nasıl hissettirdiğini anlatır mısın?

RM: Doğum günüm 12 Eylül olduğu için memnunum. Çünkü bu benim doğum tarihim, 9-12'nin benim için çok özel bir anlamı var.

S: Doğum günü sana ne ifade ediyor?

RM: Artık biraz daha yaşlandığım için "aileye saygı" günü olacak. Annemi ve babamı aramam gereken gün. Ve tabii bana doğum günü dileğinde bulunan insanlara minnettar olma, ayrıca çevremde olanlara yeniden fakat değişik bir şekilde bakma günü.

S: Yaşlanmak hakkındaki düşüncelerin?
