The Farmhouse

Well, here she is! My sister Becky's lovely old house! The farmhouse was built around 1900's and has some lovely features. Right now she needs lots of love..... and Work!!
We spent the weekend helping them get started!

One of the loveliest features is the front staircase. Everyone who walks in the front door can't help but exclaiming. The banister has already been restored, but the walls certainly in need of  a little sprucing!

This is looking back toward the living room from the dining room. There is new drywall that needs to be plastered and hardwood floors that need to be refinished through out.
It already looks like a construction zone doesn't it?!

The kitchen is also in need of a bit of work.

And here is the new bathroom tile floor we laid! It took awhile to get all the prep work done. As with most old houses, one always comes across previous owners handiwork. The bathroom floor had two layers of plywood and a layer of vinyl, which all takes time to remove.....

I will keep you updated on the progress. We will be heading up a couple more times this month to help with projects.

18th PAPHOS APHRODITE FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES DON GIOVANNI

From Cyprus Mail 2/6/2016 - article by Bejay Browne

THE 18th ‘Pafos Aphrodite Festival’ will presents Mozart’s popular opera Don Giovanni at the medieval castle in Kato Paphos in September it has been announced.

Performances will take place on  September 2, 3 and 4 and there will be a simultaneous translation in Greek and English via subtitles.

The offering is a co-production between Parma Opera Organisation C.E.F.A.C. with the participation of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, said organisers.  A statement from the Pafos Aphrodite Festival said: “This is one of the greatest works of the operatic repertoire and one of the leading lyric masterpieces of all times, the outstanding Don Giovanni by Mozart. This is an opera in two acts and the libretto was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte.”

They added that the opera premiered at the Estates Theatre in Prague on 29 October 1787. Da Ponte’s libretto was considered, like many of its time, as drama giocoso, a term that denotes a combination of serious and comic action.

The plot takes place in Seville, Spain, in the 17th century and narrates the erotic adventures of the libertine Spanish nobleman Don Giovanni who insults and scandalises everyone until he encounters something he cannot kill, beat up, dodge, or outwit, said the release.  In one of his adventures he attempts to rape Donna Anna and whilst trying to escape, he kills her father, who then returns from the dead to take his vengeance.  Since Don Giovanni does not repent for his actions he is led to hell.

TWO ANCIENT TOMBS UNCOVERED IN KATO PAPHOS

Cyprus Mail 2/6/2016 - Article by Bejay Browne

Work to clean up Kato Paphos was bought to a grinding halt on Thursday morning after the discovery of two ancient tombs in the heart of the area.

Paphos municipality employees were carrying out work to remove illegal buildings, clear rubbish and generally tidy up the area as part of the mayor’s campaign to present a better image, when they made the discovery.

The tombs were discovered at the previous site of Splash, situated between Ayiou Antoniou (Bar) Street and Poseidonos Avenue, which operated as an outdoor bar.

According to workers at the site, they immediately told private workmen, also at the site undertaking work for the bar owner, to cease work and leave until the authorities decide what action to take.
Earlier this year, the bar was torched and police said the 20-by-20 metre wood and metal structure was completely destroyed by a deliberately set fire.

Once uncovered, it was obvious that the tomb had previously been discovered, as a stone placed above it clearly writes ‘TOMB’ in English.   An archaeologist from the Department of Antiquities confirmed to the Cyprus Mail that the tomb is not a new discovery and that it was found more than 30 years ago.  “This tomb was uncovered in the past, in the 1980s and there are numerous tombs like this in Kato Paphos. It was covered over, as many of them are. There are so many tombs along that road, and it’s nothing new, and this is not a new find.”

However, work at the site had to stop for authorities to visit it and determine what action could be taken.  A municipality worker said: “We were doing some work here, we found these two tombs and stopped immediately and also told the others to stop as well. We’re not allowed to go down into the tomb and are waiting for the mayor or a representative to visit the site and tell us what to do.”
Recently, six tombs were uncovered during upgrading works in the area. Tombs were found close to the police station and then next to the kafenio, opposite the town hall.

The spokesman for the municipality said: “This kind of thing can be found everywhere in Paphos, but it’s strange that it was discovered and presumably offered as an attraction and then covered over. It would be better to keep it visible and covered with a special glass, so that visitors may also see.”
